bob--this is the 2nd time you have mentioned that art shouldnt be debated. but, opinions should be given. if two have differing opinions, it opens the dialog as to the actual differences witnessed. how can you not have a debate? not from a stand point of right and wrong but from the differing points of view.

we all take something and give something to art, whatever the medium. we take from it our experience of being emotionally (or not at all) connected or disconnected, in whatever form of response to and because of. we give to the art because of ALL of our past experiences that are completely and utterly unique to us the viewer, listener, feeler, taster, and even smeller.

the only think that can be said about art, in all its forms, is that the artist him/herself, have a responsibility to not share THEIR opinions about the truths of the piece as that does exclude all others that have a differing opinion (read as experience) to said piece. the audience of the medium become part owners, if only for a brief moment, forever.

art is completely debatable because of its subjectivity. the goal of any art is to garner emotional response, whatever that may be; laughter, sadness, horror, fright, tears of sadness and joy. it makes the "why" important to you the owner of that response important. the subjectivity comes from the hows whens and because's. and that can be and should be debated.

i can debate a handful of things about how handful of reasons how "dude, wheres my car" is a better viewing experience than "shawshank redemption". but, the whys (that most everyone would share--including myself) would outweigh every single argument. the why is not debatable. that is in itself the art--and its continually changing based upon your life and how it changes and what you experience from viewing (or whatever mode of engaging the art) to viewing.

Cool, have at it man. I can't type that long of an explaination of what I'm trying to say.

Alec Baldwin in "Glengarry Glen Ross." The most riveting sub-fifteen minute performance since Ned Beatty in "Network."

2001 (Stanley "no will ever come close to being as batshit crazy awesome as me" Kubrick...

Love that^^^ I always seem to be alone here but for raw emoitn, story telling and the beauty of the film itself (visual) I thought "Eyes Wide Shut" was flat off the charts... but again, I seem to find myself alone on that one, one of my all time top 25'ers for sure...

Eyes Wide Shut is amazing. In my top fifteen for sure.

Meryl Streep in the "Iron Lady" over Rooney Mara in "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo", and every film that lost out to "The Artist".

Get out of here! I didn't even notice that was her! So crazy and her sister (ultimately hot) own the Giants and the Steelers! Just, wow.

I have probably never watched an Oscar presentation, nor cared much about popularity among celeberety, but the fact that it took Robin Williams so long to win an award and the fact that Hurt Locker beat Avatar are my two strongst impressions. Other than the Mara girls, and oh yeah, those other sisters, Deschanel, Zooey and Emily. They all are kind of like a cross between Frances McDormand and Heddy Lamar. Oh, yeah and Clint Eastwood is totally undervalued. Some of his work, including True Crime is spectacular.

Actually the fact that Heddy Lamar didn't win everything from an Oscar to a Nobel prize is larceny.

Speaking of Shawshank...it was highway robbery that Shawshank didn't come away with Best Picture.

That year of movies was maybe the best ever. Gump, Shawshank and Pul Fiction?! All in my top 10 of all time.

My favorite movie is "A Few Good Men". How Tom Cruise was never nominated is ridiculous. That was in a time period I call Tom Cruise B.C. (before crazy).

I'm ducking as I type this...I think Tarantino is overrated.

Couldn't agree more with the second part.

"Edgiest" character I've ever been extremely attracted to.

I've been hooked on Zooey since Almost Famous.

I honestly thought "Up" should have won Best Picture over Hurt Locker and Avatar. Guess the academy isn't ready to give that award to a Pixar flick yet.

Oh, you got good taste in women. Her sister (Zooey's) is really good in everything she does off TV, like in Glory Road. Small role, extremely well done.

And Rooney's sister added quite a bit to Shooter, nobody's best but her sister was one of three or four reasons that movie didn't really suck.

I am specifically glad Hurt Locker won. Cameron is a great expolorer, but his film career strikes me as a tad bit exploitative. Adolescent girls and people with little immagination that need fantasies spelled out. Hurt Locker was a film about what war really does to people, and was produced and written by a woman (any guess who?) It made for a good statement. But up was incredible to.

I know it was Scorsese's ex-wife...the name escapes me.

I was blown away by the visuals in Avatar, but I thought it was better the first time I saw it...when it was called "Dances with Wolves".

2 things:
it was produced and directed by kathryn bigalow--who is Camerons ex-wife, not scorcese. which makes winning to avatar that much sweeter. it was written by mark boal.

2nd thing: did you steal my joke?? ;)

The exploitative film making has been a joke for fifteen or twenty years. It wasn't even originally either of your jokes. Although you both put a fresh face on a brave new world.

Thing two: Mr. Larson does not steal anything and Bigalow was one of Cameron's ex-wives. He doesn't have a good track record with ex'es. (See his past exploitative films.)

Any movie Cuba Gooding Jr has had a major role in. He's the most under appreciated actor in Hollywood, IMHO.

I never got all the Cuba hate after "Jerry Maguire." Every other actor who had his career rescued by winning or being nominated in the 90s got all kinds of love, at least for awhile (Tommy Lee Jones, John Travolta, Nicolas Cage). I don't know why Gooding got shat all over. Because he was too happy?

I agree... two good movie followed by a progressive downward spiral...

also couldn't disagree more with the Good Will Hunting hate,... one of the better films of that decade.

Disagree wholeheartedly. The Kill Bill series is one of the better things ever put to film. Taratino melded old school kung-fu, anime, western, and mobster movie making techniques into an almost flawless thematic style. It was beautiful.

Plus we got this shot out of it:

but different tastes...

tarantino was one of the filmmakers that made me want to get into the business.

i know his movies arent for everyone. my girlfriend will not watch them. if you take them for what they are, they are really good. he's a B-movie guy with a list talent and budget. i think his take on these genre films he makes are in fact fresh and interesting. and his dialog his ridiculously good. him and aaron sorkin are my favorite writers in film and TV.

I'll give you that Kill Bill (volume one only) was entertaining. Pulp Fiction had some quotable lines, but I need more than a chopped up chronology, John T. and Uma Thurman Bat Dancing over burgers and male rape to be convinced that I just saw a one of the best movies ever. I also reject the idea that Uma Thurman is hot.

Reservoir Dogs...cool, but it had been done before:

I don't want to discuss Inglorious Basterds...just know that I think it's the most overrated film in the history of cinema.

lol... I think the opening was amazing... I watched it and thought Quentin was back... but after that one scene the entire movie was horrid... just terrible... 'hate' about covers my feelings for that film... :)
