“@walkerRcarey: I absolutely abhor rap music. Its destroying America” I truly believe its one of the most daunting social issues of our time
2 hours ago

I personally believe that most rap is garbage nowadays, but there is still some very good rap music out there. Care to discuss?

Depends. One must know not to put much stock into what some millionaire is saying over the airwaves.

It is the PARENTS job to raise a child and teach them right from wrong and what's BS and what's not.

I like some rap music...not a lot of it, but some.

There are so many young great rappers out right now that there is going to be a huge resurgence in rap.

DON'T even get me started haha...I like rap music. I fall more in line with the conscious rapper like Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Lupe Fiasco, KRS-one...There is a lot of trash out there, I'll admit. However, I feel there is some (not saying as much) trash in rock and I like the genre too. The only difference is that Top 40/Popular radio stations will play the good rock, but the masses aren't really calling for conscious rap. The Waka Flocka's, Gucci Mane's, and Nicki Minaj's of the world wouldn't exist if their wasn't a huge market for them. Well, Nicki Minaj is the only one that sells records out of the 3 but I think you catch my drift. I wouldn't say rap music is destroying America though.

Personally do not like it maybe because it does not appeal to me. It just doesn't do it for me. I'd rather listen to Rock. To each his own I guess.

I'm into Jay Z, Drake, and various other artists. Rap sounds good, not necessarily something I want to quote in my tweets.

Love it or hate it, it definitely doesn't have the power to "destroy America" and isn't a "daunting social issue," at least not any more. In the mid-90s when Biggie and Tupac released new albums they were huge recording industry phenomenons that topped the charts. Nowadays, rappers usually don't top the charts; people like Adele, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry do. Not saying rap is dying, but it's hardly starting a revolution. It's just become a niche in the recording industry like so many others.

Every brand of music has its good and bad. I do like rap, but I can't stand most rap/hip-hop on the radio and charts (Drake, lil wayne, etc.). If you want to hear great rap, listen to atmosphere, lupe fiasco (first two albums) and talib kweli

Amen to that brother. Lack of parenting is why kids are running around with no sense, not Lil Wayne. It only took a couple swats from my dad's belt for me to recognize what I shouldn't be doing.

This guy is either 25 years late to the party, or still upset about this:

America is not being destroyed by rap. LMAO. Only America can destroy America.

Nonsense to debate this issue.

Motherless and fatherless Americans have no guide to what is "values" and "ethics."

Start with people that have no responsible lifestyle:they usually find a catharsis in hate music. Reform them. That's fixes the problem.

Atmosphere is legit. Still have yet to get the latest album. Lupe's 3rd album, while super commercial, was still better than 95% of the other garbage that gets airplay.

I liked it but it definitely wasn't even close to what he's capable of. And if you ever get a chance to see atmosphere live...DO IT

Pretty big rap fan... Em, Jay-Z, J.Cole, even some old school.. Lil Wayne, Gucci and Nicki Minaj are completely destroying the genre... The rappers i like have some meaning in their lyrics.... People like Wayne, Gucci, and the rest of the garbage YM crew rap about NOTHING..

When did top 40 stations start playing good rock? As a seasoned rocker, I must disagree, top 40 stations won't touch good rock music.

I never got into rap much...some of the Death Row stuff amused me in my youth...My ears tend to enjoy contemporary instruments...blame that on musicians in my family I guess. But there is a lot of really good rap out there that touches on social issues and doesn't require extreme amounts of gimmick and cursing to make a point.

Lil Wayne, soulja boy, and some other rappers today are absolute crap. I don't really like drake too much either. One of the better rappers and most underrated today is far and away j cole. I like some of the new stuff, but I mostly listen to 80s and 90s gangster rap like nwa and wu tang clan. 90s rappers like biggie, tupac and nas are the greatest of all time.

Currently all I listen to is the game, j cole, and some skrillex(not rap at all for those that don't know)

Definitely a let down from the first two albums though...and I will definitely look into doing that. Thanks for the tip!

LOL. Tupac and Biggie still hold up to this day. A lot of these other rappers have a minute or two of fame and then fade away into nothing.

I really like Jay-Z and Kanye West. Kanye is a jerk and full of himself, but you can't deny he makes really good music.

Eminem just screams into a mic now, and it doesn't feel genuine anymore because now he's got everything he could ever want. There's no reason for him to be angry. He's made it.

I actually know the guy who tweeted at Trevor. We talk rap and hip hop a lot. He, and I as well, would say that Wu Tang is leaps and bounds better than the rest. Nas is solid too. Old school Snoop Dogg.

Rappers like lil Wayne, Jay Z, Kanye West, etc are nothing but a bunch of bitches. They all talk a tough game, but at the end of the day they wear designer clothes and ALL of their music is digitally enhanced.

Walker, if you're out there:

"How can hip hop be dead if Wu Tang is forever?"

If it's top 40...
I won't ask you to define good rock.

That'd need it's own thread.
The Music Suggestions thread is a good time!
