Mike Frank always argued ND needs to build from the lines out because it is easier to attract great linemen to ND then skill players. I tend to agree with him. So while I'm not inclined to argue your points with you, overall I'm happy with Kelly's recruiting because he is really focusing on the defense and OL and I agree with that philosophy.

The below post is Exhibit A of why you shut your mouth regarding placing blame in recruiting until it's all over.
Of course, some people are so eager to condemn Kelly that all rationality flies out the window. And the irony is that they condemn Kelly for purple faced hissy fits. Heh.

Public Service Announcement:

ND’s Dept at QB:

I’m just pointing out that something is seriously amiss with the handling of the QB position, which unfortunately happens to be the most important offensive position for Brian Kelly’s offense, and which is supposedly Brian Kelly’s strength.

If Brian Kelly handled it well and had Dayne Crist playing up to his potential, it seems ND would have had a better shot at landing Gunner Kiel (for a lot of reasons, including perception that BK is good at developing QBs, a good Dayne Crist = more wins = perception that the program is going somewhere good, he likely would not have recruited Golson because the depth would have been more secure with Crist, Rees and Hendrix alone and Brian Kelly never would have turned 5 shades of purple on national television or something.)

Brian Kelly had a chance to land the #1 QB, with all the right conditions and none of the factors that usually cost ND the commitment, and he couldn't close the deal. It seems like Gunner’s choice is a direct rejection of Brian Kelly and his program. Or something. I do believe the failure to land Gunner Kiel will set the program’s National Championship aspirations back another couple years. I do not see any QB on the roster that has that kind of potential, and any QB for 2013 will not be able to make an impact before 2014 or 2015.

If Brian Kelly ran an offense that was not QB-centric, then this wouldn't be such an issue. But look at the difference between USC v. ND in 2010 without Matt Barkley versus USC v. ND in 2011 with Matt Barkley. When you have a chance to land a Matt Barkley, Jimmy Clausen, Tim Tebow, Matt tafford, Vince Young or Gunner Kiel, you do it!

In socals defense, the guy has more quality posts over the yeras than most regs put together.... He's entitled to a swing and miss in my book...

Really I'm glad to see he's posted recently, I thought he moved on.

Disagree with the OP before gunner commited.

Bama started 8 3star kids this year.

Golson a mistake? Please. You cant teach his strengths. Yes he hasnt played a down, but the fade he threw to Goodman in the spring game. Cant teach that. Keeping his eyes up the field. Cant teach that.

BK is the **** plain and simple. For christ sake we REDSHIRTED our entire frosh class last yr on the Oline. Yes i know ND doesnt redshirt...

Cant get kids without a qb. Rees God love him over achieved in 2010 and had high expectations in 11. But Gunner will get kids based off his ranking alone. Aka clausen. Golson will show kids the true BK offense.

Kids will come. ND aint gonna get all 5 stars. You need 3stars to push 5stars. BK is building a damn program, not a 2 yr tease.

I don't agree with the OP, especially with regard to recruiting, and I am an unabashed Brian Kelly supporter. BUT, I do have to say that at least some of SoCal's points in this post have some merit. At the very least, it shows he is not some raving lunatic, even if you don't totally agree with him. I love Kelly, but he certainly isn't perfect. I do think the way he handled the QB situation with respect to Dayne was a mistake, and some of SoCal's other points in the post I linked to above aren't entirely off base, either, IMO.

His initial post was a reaction out of frustration. And let's be serious: nobody saw this Kiel thing coming, so its hard to kill him based on that (although I didn't agree with his take on recruiting even at the time of his post, nor would I have at our lowest point last week).

I agree with this post. I would also add that, geez, if people jump with both feet on opinionated posts, that will discourage such posts, which will discourage discussion, which will discourage understanding, and that will encourage recrimination and knee-jerk factionism and pigeon-holing and cliquish-ness, activities that I think we should discourage here. There are some trolls here, but by and large, we all really want the Irish to succeed much more than we want to be "right."
