I wish I had your enthusiasm. Here's mine:
"It's a new saturday, and ND is going to lose AGAIN"
Sorry bro but I just can't be as positive as you are. I have been watching ND since 84 when I was 7 years old. They were good. Dominant. Nasty. Tough. Intimidating football team to play.
Now it's 2011 and ND football is just another game on someone's schedule. Nobody fears us anymore. and it's pretty simple to come into ND stadium and win. Until I see MAJOR MAJOR MAJOR MAJOR change I'm just going to continue to accept the fact that we really aren't much better than the Sun Belt/MAC teams.
I find myself agreeing more and more regularly with my buddy NDOM. This pain that I allow myself to feel on these Saturdays is getting to be too frequent. I too look back on the ND teams I grew up with, but I also look at other teams around the country today and the products I am seeing compared to the 2011 Irish are quite different.
I don't know what the future holds of course, but I would not be surprised to see this program devolve to the level of the Army's and Harvards of the world. Teams that used to be at the top of the mountain in the days of yore. We might look back on the '88 Irish squad and show old VHS highlights to our grandchildren. The video will look all grainy and weird because it isn't 3D and the kid will just roll his eyes and think, "Here he goes AGAIN! Rambling on about some football team that was good 50 years ago."
Hopefully, it won't come to that. I think if anyone can resurrect this program, it is Kelly. However, it just feels like we are teetering on the brink. I know that might be an exaggeration, but that is what it feels like to me.
Now, with all that being said, I am still going to rock my Irish gear today and yell and scream that we kick some Midshipmen arse!!! In order to move forward, we need to first pick ourselves up out of the muck and the mire and I hope this is the game the team does just that.
