What do you guys think of the new All-Star formate of picking teams ?

I like it. As long as it doesn't turn into a team Crosby vs team Ovechkin blow fest. It'll get some guys pride hurt where they were picked and maybe light a fire under them a bit to produce a more competitive game. I like it that the NHL at least tweaks it a little(N.A vs World also). So I like it. But we'll see how it works

Kings at the top of the power rankings....I have never seen that before

NHL Hockey Power Rankings - Week 7 - National Hockey League - ESPN

It is very nice to see. More important than the recognition or good record thus far is the product I am seeing on the ice. Kings just look a lot more confident. Quick is playing like a man possessed. Bernier is giving him some good rest and, although not the second coming of Patrick Roy many people predicted, he has been a very good backup. I can't remember the Kings ever having such a good 1-2 punch in goal.

Once the power play picks up some momentum, the Kings will be tough. I am still very cautious and it is a long season. I am not ready to crown the Kings Western Conference champs just yet, but it sure is fun watching this team this year.

yes, having the #1 PK in the league, with the #1 GAA of 1.9, gives that PP a little 'wiggle room'. Crazy to think this team can get better, and it clearly can. not to mention they have big money for FA acquistion they might need down the stretch. nothing but good news to report for the Kings.

Gotta get Doughty locked up as well as some of the other young guys before that big money can be accessed for a FA.

I can't believe some people were all doom and gloom when the Kings "missed out" on Kovalchuk.

we agreed to disagree on the kovy deal :)

all good cup teams make killer FA acquisitions at the deadline, I expect the same with the kings. it may not be the big name(s), it could 1 or 2 role players to shore up dips in production, or to reinforce injuries. but even thinking as far back as when Rangers won the cup, they raided the chicago blackhawks and got role players like Stephan Matteau who paid huge dividends for them for the playoff run.

hah, im already thinking playoffs...I am a bit premature in thinking that, but dang, they look very good out- of-the-gate so far.

No, we agree about Kovy. Kovy would have been a great acquisition - but at the right price. $100 million is just too much money and would strip your team of any flexibility down the road. Look at what the Devils have had to do so far. They have had to dress fewer skaters at times and would have had to do it more if not for significant injuries to Parise and Brodeur and others. How tough is it going to be for them to re-sign Parise this year?

I could potentially see the Kings trading by the deadline, but I would think to fill some gaps with 1 or 2 role players like you mentioned. However, they have a bunch of resources in the minors as well.

The Kings have built the team that can contend for multiple years, not just one or two. The guys already on the roster are solid and the young guns in the system are good too. I mean, how great is it to have the problem with a guy like Brayden Schenn to have the choice to keep him on the roster or send him back to juniors this year? He is a talented player and to have the luxury of having him develop more in juniors rather than be pressed in to service is something the Kings have not enjoyed in a long, long time.

I want to say ESPN can go shove it up their ***, but I'd be thrilled if hockey goes back to ESPN. Sports Center becomes unwatchable after the College Football season, and will stay that way until ESPN has a financial incentive to give hockey more time and basketball less.

On an unrelated note, how about the Flyers-Tampa game tonight? I didn't know 8-7 was still possible in the show.

**Note: If someone could change the name of this thread to just "The NHL Thread" that might be more encompassing.

Anyhow, any thoughts on the season so far as we close out 2010? I think it has been a really fun year so far. I am looking forward to the Winter Crosby Classic and the new format All Star game.

I am enjoying watching the futility of the Devils and their $100 million - 8 goal, minus 26 franchise player.

I am hoping both the Kings and Anaslime Quacks will make the playoffs and, hopefully, face each other. I think a playoff match up will be exciting and really solidify the rivalry. Plus, I could go to every game in the series.

Can't wait to see how this season plays out. Hopefully it will end with the Kings hoisting Lord Stanley's Cup at Staples Center. I am predicting a Kings - Flyers Stanley Cup Finals. Kings steal one in Philly and then close it out in 6 games on home ice. Sorry KPENN!

Kings laid an egg against the 'Yotes last night after playing the best game of the season against the Sharks two nights before.

Hopefully they come out strong against the Flyers tonight! LET'S GO KINGS!!!

Pronger out. Shelley serving the first of his two game suspension. Timmonen still hurting. Leighton starting in goal after being out for so long. But all that being said, I am still nervous for this game. Especially after the way they played last night.

I am hoping for a Carcillo/Kyle Clifford scrap. Could be a good bout. Maybe even Carcillo and Wayne Simmonds. With Shelley being out, we won't get to see how Westgarth does against him.

Plus, I am secretly hoping that Sean O'Donnell deep down wants the Kings to win.

Shelley's about as usefull to that team as me.

Boy! I have been wrong a lot of times in my life, but this game tonight was a huge steaming pile of crap. I didn't think the Kings could play worse than they did against the 'Yotes and I was wrong.

Kudos KPENN - your team got the better of us in every way tonight. That...just, well...that just sucked. We don't get back on track soon it is going to be a tough season.

Yeah tough situation though. 4 games in 5 nights is tough. Thank god the flyers could score tonight. Leighton's gotta be the worse goalie in the NHL

I wonder if someone is going to pick him up or if he will go down to the AHL. He could still be a capable goalie in some system.

Pretty sure he'll clear and go to the AHL. I'll be absolutely shocked if someone is willing to pick him up.

the kings are 5 points out of a playoff spot, and just stinking up the joint. typical kings season, it'll be a fight just to make the playoffs. They couldnt score in a women's prison with a fist full of pardons.

Yep, last night was depressing... missing out on an elite scorer in the off season in really hurting... there are other issues... productive from the blue line and the fore check, consistent play in net... they've had a lot over this tail spin... but yeah, they need to score goals... period.

too bad, because overall, they have a very, very nice core... hope they don't sell the farm

Dean Lombardi was on Sirius radio this morning and it sounds like he is committed to staying the course. He said some GMs have called, but he is not willing to part with what they are asking for.

I don't get it. This is the exact same team that put together a string of some of the best games I have seen EVER and now they are just crapping the bed like no other. They put together road games in Detroit, San Jose, Nashville, and Colorado that were some of the best efforts by this Kings team. I don't know what has changed. What a difference a month makes.

Doughty, Kopitar, Brown, Johnson, Quick, Simmonds, Bernier, Clifford, and some of the other young guns in the minors all have a bright future with the franchise. I just wish we could get some consistency in all facets of the game. Season isn't over yet, but they sure are digging a hole for themselves.
