So far, they have run well enough to win.

Wow. No.

The passing game has been fucking magnificent. That's why we've won. The running game was great against Purdue....who is 108 out 119 FBS teams in rushing defense. If we run into a really good secondary than we're in deep shit. JC and the receivers will still perform, they're that good, but not the way they have the last two weeks.

You seem like a good fan but you're wildly unrealistic (or optomistic).

Ahhh, now this is the venom and bantering I have been missing this past week!

I don't care what happens as long as we keep winning. If Thanksgiving weekend comes around and we are sitting at 11-1, I am going to have no regrets. If we go to a BCS game and we lose big, oh well! You know why that doesn't bother me? BECAUSE WE WILL HAVE WITNESSED THE SINGLE GREATEST TURNAROUND IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL HISTORY!!! So what if we lose by a big margin again? I lived through the 2007 season dammit! NOTHING can be that painful!!!

Have a great night everyone!!! NDinL.A. - keep you chin up, we have to go back to work again this week with those stinking, rat bastard SC fans! It sure was nice this past week with them coming off a loss. Oh well, hang in there buddy!

Winning is always priority #1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.

The boys are, indeed, getting it done. If we go into Thanksgiving at 11-1 I will shit my pants....that would mean that we beat pUSC.

When you shit your pants up where you live, does it just freeze? And then is it at all similar to when you touch your tongue to a frozen flag pole? I wouldn't want to pour warm water down my ass crack to remove my underwear from my crevasse!

Sorry for being crass, I am a little intoxicated.

I haven't shit my pants in some time so I'm not sure. At the risk of being crude, I would venture to guess that the consistency of the poop would be a factor in freezing. The kind of pooping that you'll do tomorrow (alcohol induced) would most likely freeze because it's usually runny. A normal shit probably wouldn't freeze.

Move up here and find out for yourself....everybody else from your state is moving here so join the party.

LOL, you guys should start a thread about "shitting your pants experiences" and see how many people respond. I would share a couple of my stories. Although, that may be a little crude topic for some.......i bet you there are some funny ass stories out there

Two thoughts:

1. All the talk about us (or any team, for that matter) going to a BCS bowl at this point in the season is laughable. Here's a visual aid.

2. How about we let them play the games before we decide what we don't (or do) deserve for a bowl?

agree with both points.

first off, we will not be in the BCS unless we beat USC. I just dont see that happenning this year. In previous years a 2 loss ND team would probably make it but I dont see us making the rankings until we beat UNC or maybe even UDub which that just isnt enough time to climb high enough that if we lose to USC, we would fall out of the top 12(if we even climb that high)

And second, we would get killed in any BCS bowl besides the Orange because we would match up favorably against say a team like Wake or USF.

I do believe we finish 11-2 with us winning that gator or the cotton. UNC is going to be a HUGE game. if we win that we are in for an amazing rest of the year

is huge... big statement game for us there.

Should be a great game too, two youngest teams in the country that actually have a shot at becoming something down the road... should be a great game

odd fact is a close loss may be the best outcome long term for ND, the last thing they want is to run through nine plus wins, go to the BCS and get SMOKED again....

why do you guys think that if we go 10-2 we will be in the BCS. you have to finish top 12, and a 2 loss ND team this year just wont do it.

I agree, and I also think a lot of people around here are going to be in for a bit of a reality check next week against UNC. They're a very solid team with talent all around. To be honest, I'd be (very pleasantly) surprised if we walk away with the W. This just might be that game that many have alluded to where we need a FG(s) to tie and/or win, and we all know how much we can count on that.

One of the problems with the bowl games is that on many occasions, ND has probably gone to a higher ranked bowl than what they deserve. Bowls will always try to get ND because getting the Irish means one thing......MONEY! Having the Irish in your bowl game will increase ratings(either you love them or hate them)
and increased ratings means more money. I just want to see them go to a bowl...any bowl....and WIN the damm thing. With this young team that would be a ideal stepping stone to next year

10-2 would do it, however our last game of the year is at USC, and since we will be 10-1 going in to the game, a loss would drop us out of BCS contention. Incoming Gator bowl invite.

I really don't care which bowl we get into or who we play. My only focus of this season is on improvement!! I am more concerned about the long term health of the program, not some somewhat trivial stat like bowl losing streak. If we are the best choice for a BCS game, then I say "Great!". If we are relegated to a lesser bowl, I will still say "Great!".

I have felt, from before the season started, it was important for the Irish to regain the focus and swagger of the teams in the first two seasons of the CW era showed. They aren't completely there yet, but we seem to be making serious strides in that direction.

I won't lie in saying I would love to stop hearing the Irish-haters babble on about the bowl losing streak. I just don't feel it is important enough to worry about considering where the program is at right now.

I agree if we somehow beat NC next week...which I think we lose big. We are too one dimensional at this point to beat a team like NC....we still get waxed by USC and drop out of the top 12! NC will be a huge reality check for this team!!! I still say 8-4 with a lose to USC, NC, and (Navy or BC).

For those of you who haven't watched North Carolina yet, they are very good. I'm surprised they're not ranked. They're more athletic than ND (top to bottom), and their new QB is atrting to settle in nicely. Butch Davis has got things going down there. Unfortunately, many of us have a rude awakening coming this Saturday IMHO. I think we need to learn how to play a complete game, 1st to 4th quarter, to beat a team of this calibur. It can happen, but it's not something I expect yet, esp on the road.

I'm torn on the whole bowl thing. You go into every game thinking you can win; you have to. But a BCS bowl would be a disaster. Older talent vs. younger talent = blowout, usually. The $$ would be great though. With Weis's first teams, we didn't have the athletes to compete. You can only outscheme someone so much. Right now, we don't have enough athletes (yet) with enough experience. We're just not there yet. You can't beat SDSU by 8 and Stanford by 7 and tell me we are ready.

But we're getting there! And damn, a bowl win, any bowl win, would be nice at this point.

Can somebody explain to me what it means when someone says "the team needs to play for 4 quarters", because every game I've watched this season, the team plays 4 quarters. In fact, if they don't play the full 4 quarters, I think they take a loss by forfeit.

Notre Dame never runs up the score, they got into a conservative offense to run out the clock, it was a mistake in the gameplan, one I'm sure Weis has learned from.

This team has been good since the 2nd half of the MSU game. If they are ELITE for 1 quarter, good for another, and shitty the other two, I can care less, so long as they have more points than the other team by games end.

I think they used a football phrase that my coach, and many many others, use when talking about football. If you want to be petty and take the phrase literally and try to make that poster look like an ass, so be it.

Playing 4 quarters means playing good football for 4 quarters. I, for one, say scoreboard baby, we're 4-1! However, on my post, I said in order to beat a quality team like NC, we're going to have to play 4 quarters of good football. You can get away with playing great football for 1 quarter and decent quarters the rest of the way against the likes of Stanford and SDSU and Purdue. Not so against USC, or even North Carolina. You do that, and you will lose. Just ask Georgia.

But having said that, I hope I'm wrong about NC. I hope we can play with the same confidence on the road as we do at home. But it's going to be tough. To me, this entire season was about progress, and I see HUGE progress. Therefore, so far, this season has been a huge success IMO so far. But I'm going to temper my enthusiasm just a bit and realize that there is still tons of work to be done, and that we are nowhere near as good as the top 6-7 schools. Yet...

I dont think the team has control over how well they play in 15 minute increments. I think a fumble, a dropped pass, a lucky blitz, etc can heavily influence the outlook of an entire quarter. In other words, luck plays a huge factor when breaking a teams performance down by quarter.

When taking a step back and looking at the team from a 10,000 foot view--over a larger sample of work (say ND's last 10 quarters) I think we can make some sounds assumptions/judgments of the quality of team ND is turning into.

As it stands now, USC is the better team, no question. It's going to take a lot of good fortune to beat them.

Saying ND will have to play great for 4 quarter is superfluous.

Luck is the phenomenom that happens when skill and preparation meet opportunity.

In other words, you make your own luck by developing your skills and being prepared for each game.

It wouldn't be luck if the result is a product of skill and preparation. I dont care how much team prepares for a game, or how skilled they're. Sometimes a ball can tip off a helmet or slip through a players hand (that same player will catch the ball the other 99% of the time) and land into a defenders hand who has an easy/wide open angle to the endzone. This single play can change the entire outlook of a quarter.

Now, did the team who got the lucky touchdown play better than the other team? Or was the outcome merely a product of luck?

When a ball bounces off of a receiver's hands and into the hands of a defender it's not luck. It's a lack of preparation, concentration and skill on the receivers part. If a quarterback throws a ball that bounces off a player's helmet it's because the player was out of position (offensive) or in position (defensive) or it was just a bad throw by the quarterback. Again, all of those scenarios involve concentration or preparation in one form or another.

So if the WR would've concentrated/prepared more, he would've been able to use jedi mind tricks to prevent the deflected pass from landing right into the defenders hands, with a wide open angle to the endzone?

No, he would have caught the ball. The defender, on the other hand, used skill to catch the ball and was prepared to be in the right position to make the play. The defender would also have been concentrating on the play and breaking to where the ball was thrown in order to be in the area.

No offense, '97, but ND still only averaged 3.1 yards per carry today. They're not going "to be back", or anywhere near it, until they find a way to run the ball consistently, and well.

I believe my quote was 'on its way to being back.' I did not say that a victory over UNC meant that we were back. Semantics, perhaps, so no offense taken.
