Talent was there, BVG was just awful. I remember when he had Day dropping in coverage at the worst times.

Oh, I know. I was just pointing out that we didn't need 11 Jaylons to have a good defense. The talent was already there. We just needed a competent DC.

I’m wondering if they might’ve just figured out the PAC -12 or be a bad match-up like Stanford used to be. They’re 3-5 out of conference the last 2 years. Some tough games in there for sure, but only wins are southern Utah , Weber state , San Diego st. (1-1 won this year, lost last year.)

Eh. We'll see. Freeman is a culture guy. Moreso than some schematic genius. Now, one could surely argue that he needs a scheme guy at OC, and question whether Parker is that. But there is at least an argument to be made in the other direction, that hiring guys you are confident will help build your culture and values is more important than the Xs and Os. If the story of Rees being forced upon him and whatever friction that might have resulted are true, then this is a logical response to that.

It makes more sense than freaking out because the one guy you actually offered didn't take it, and so falling back to your longtime buddy.

Yeah, that's an easy takeaway but Vandy was much better in year 2 after Lea made the hires than they were in year 1. The point isn't that anyone should buy into the idea that ND should buy into Vandy's hiring philosophy. The point is to try to understand a part of the thought process that might go through an inexperienced coach's mind that goes beyond an "I just want to hire my friends" narrative. And I think that thought process is reasonable... even if I wish we had someone other than Parker.

I’m old enough to remember when this board was thrilled when BVG was hired and pissed when Lea was hired. The consensus is never wrong. Never!

Some of ya'll need to come down off the ledge. We will be better at every position next year with the exception of TE (Which should still be very good based on our history) and maybe a guard. QB will be a huge difference maker. Seriously, it would take the equivalent of BVG on offense to screw this up and BVG didn't even have this much proven talent and experience to work with at each position. I'm not expecting Parker to win a Broyles award, but I'm expecting this offense to be much better next year regardless who is OC. The last two years have been all about building, it's time.

While I support the notion that folks need to come off the ledge, it’s okay to be incredibly disappointed in the hire. If MF wanted him from the start then he should’ve just hired him but he didn’t. ND bungled the Ludwig hire. It’s one thing if Parker was respected as an offensive mastermind but outside of a 6 game stint a couple years ago, where were his OC opportunities? Were NFL teams beating down his door to bring him in?

All hires are a risk. Ludwig would’ve also been a risk but he at least has a long track record. And it was clear that’s who MF wanted.

Is Parker some offensive genius who can game plan, scheme talented players open, and call a slick game? Maybe. But odds are stacked against him.

Just saw an article where that Heather woman said ND was actually willing to take on the buyout but Ludwig backed out. He does have a pretty sweet deal at Utah I suppose. I’m just curious how an assistant “crushes” an interview with his current employer. He must have laid out a pretty detailed plan.

We’re all plebs when it comes to coaching football & hiring assistants.. and almost everyone I see on here & twitter is fuming about these hires..

When retail is piling on in one direction it’s almost guaranteed to go the other way..

Hopefully we’reall eating crow in 9 months.

Again if Kelly would have hired another buddy if he was here it would still be a melt down.

I understand wanting to have your own culture but guess what he’s here as the TE coach. So he’s gonna help with that.

Notre Dame is one of the most historic colleges in all of college football. And yet between the admin and BOT and Freeman the University of Notre Dame couldn’t get a more qualified offense coordinator. That speaks volumes.

And we all know Freeman is gonna say we want to compete for Championships. No you don’t. If you did you would have hired Parker and you wouldn’t be considering Watt as your O line coach.

This doesn’t work that way completely IMO:

People may be forced to admit they were wrong about Parker, but it would be impossible to admit this hire is anything besides lazy and stupid at this exact moment in time regardless of future success.

$2 million a year should make a splash, not….THIS
