The circumstances are different than an OC that had a choice between two jobs and picked one over the other.

Utah is very specific and unique the person in question, and he's currently employed there. It's his third stint there and they have a head coach who has been there since he replaced URBAN MEYER when he left for Florida. He didn't really choose Utah over ND, he choose to stay at Utah.

If this was Johnny O'Malley from Mt. Carmel HS in Chicago and he had a choice between ND and Utah with zero ties to Utah, yeah, I'd be kinda like "WTF?"
That's probably fair

Is the buyout excuse just a smokescreen? Maybe he just wasn’t the guy. Could be MF has someone else in mind and JS is taking the heat. Just spitballing, but the number isn’t THAT absurd considering what gets thrown around. Tommy was making 2 mil last year. 2.8 buyout plus couple mil in salary for Ludwig. I know he’s a good coach but how many thought he was a must have a couple of weeks ago. Hopefully there’s a plan.
They wouldn't willingly humiliate themselves like this. This is bad. Very rarely does the fanbase unite, but this has been a really loud squeal.

Yep. And he's originally from Utah. And LDS, I believe. He's probably got a great thing going and a pretty sweet life there.

But I also think it's a pretty big assumption that he didn't want the job. Actions indicate he was at least interested. Nobody is flying to South Bend, IN for a weekend, in the middle of winter, no less, that isn't at least warm to the idea of taking a job at ND.

Doubt we'll ever hear the actual story of what transpired, but if the buyout and contract stories are even partially true, I do believe Ludwig then, personally, played a role in his own inability to come to ND. He made some sort of error or mistake with his own contract.

I don’t know man. They’re too smart to be caught off guard this bad. Something just doesn’t seem right.

Driskell and Ryan are still pretty upset. They are saying that they learned things today from sources that make all of this even worse on ND's part.

I was hoping that he got cold feet at the last second and ND panicked and try to save face. I guess not.

I never underestimate people’s ability to screw things up, no matter how smart they are supposed to be.

I am watched him for the first time last night and he was upset just like a lot of us were. However, do you really think he has a source that would tell him anything after last night?

Absolutely, I have seen massive lapses by the smartest people in the room. Smart does not equal perfect, sometimes they like the smell of their own farts to much and get locked in the car with the heat on.

I can't even imagine what would be worse at this point.
The bad thing would be the degree of misalignment between Freeman, Swarbrick, and Jenkins/BOT.
We don’t actually know where in the chain of command the decision to not pay $2.8M to buy out a coordinator’s contract was made.
If it was Freeman’s call, OK. He runs the program, he prioritized something else. If it was the BOT, there’s a much bigger issue.

“There’s also the matter of several members of the current Irish staff producing to a level likely worthy of increased financial compensation; multiple other Power 5 programs have expressed interest in Irish assistants this cycle, from Chansi Stuckey to Mike Mickens and others.”

Seems to indicate ND probably isn’t willing to spend for Ludwig and Harding at the expense of Mickens, Stuckey etc

Worthwhile article. Also mentions Lewis, Parker and other stuff.

It makes much more sense if ND was not surprised by the buyout, but rather surprised by Utah’s unwillingness to negotiate.

Talks between ND parties and Utah folks sounds outside of Freeman and Ludwig’s control.

Best pray that ND and Utah find a way to work this out.....and that if they don't, ND can still pivot to Lewis or Candle. If it's one of those 3, we are in business IMO.

Maybe some posturing going on here. He was obviously interested in the job. Probably not a great idea for Utah to play hardball with the guy after he spent a couple of days on campus and wanted the job.

Also mentions Gino Guidugli, which would be interesting.

Is there a rep from Under Armor in the room?

Whittingham gets paid in part by UA:

“The pay increase includes money not only from Whittingham's raise from Utah ($6.5 million), but Under Armour and Learfield as well ($1.5 million).”

“Why did Notre Dame leave Under Armour?

Let me tell you a story about Andy Ludwig”

For Pete's sake, Swarbrick's kid is the head of collegiate sports marketing at Under Armour. Our apparel contract is up for renewal. Maybe time we throw a little weight around here.
