If Ludwig was the guy Freeman wanted they should have done it within reason. Less than two weeks ago nobody knew who Ludwig was and suddenly he was a home run hire for whatever reason, mostly that his offense seemed to fit the personnel ND currently has on their roster, but now all of the sudden we're clamoring to pay close to $5M for the first year of this guy's services. If you're going to pay that kind of buyout money, I want the next big thing, not a dude pushing 60 on his third stint in fucking Utah.

The terms of this buyout should have been established before he got on the plane for the hockey game this past weekend and if it was going to be an issue, he should not have been considered at all. $2.8M buyout for the 58 year old OC of Utah who has never overseen a top ten offense seems a little bit much and he's one of the highest paid assistant coaches in the PAC 12 at that. There are P5 head coaches that don't have buyouts that high. Again, if this was who Marcus wanted, somebody should have vetted all this shit before it got this far. If it wasn't going to work, Marcus needed to put the toy back and go find another one mom and dad were willing to get him. If Jack was the one who said no, I'm cool with that, but if Jack and Marcus wanted this and the Board shot it down that speaks to something else entirely.

I still have a very hard time wrapping my head around the fact that it costs this much money to get the offensive coordinator of Utah. This can't be the market, and if it really is, then Notre Dame needs to start asking themselves some hard questions about football. Truth is, the only people that seem to care about Notre Dame being elite in football again have virtually zero decision making power for it to become a reality. If the people who really matter and can make it happen don't mind what it currently is, and losing the people who do care isn't going to hurt their pocketbooks, we all know what to expect then don't we?

This being said, Marcus Freeman needs to go out and get the best OC he can find now. It's too important of a hire this early in his tenure knowing what he's up against out there. He seems like
I would be too if the prospective new employer crapped all over me and refused to pony up. I would suck up to to my current employer stat!
Yep. Imagine how their fan base feels. Benedict Arnold returns.

It's both. ND is unwilling to play ball with the big boys and do what they need to do to succeed.
But why? This has nothing to do with the amateurism of the players, so do they just hate money? Because this fiscally is a really stupid decision. For a few million dollars their making the life of their first time head coach way more difficult, burning the good will they have with a lot of fans, and making the whole program look like a joke.

Hopefully we learned something. If the fossil candidate shows up with his contract on a stone tablet, we may need to do more research before offering.
My dude, let the age thing go. 58 is not old in the coaching profession when realistically whoever we hire is likely only here for 2-4 years max anyhow.

I'll say it again - since everything has fallen into the La Brea Tar Pits - Go after Slade Nagle, newly-promoted Tulane OC, unless Freeman already has talked to him and got a definitive no. What has he got to lose? He would be a good hire AND not break the BoT Bank! I also thought I read a few times that he had at least a discussion with Alabama for their OC opening before Rees was hired, so he appears to be open to better opportunities.

I still don't fathom why we can't have Hartman for one year and Ruggiero for 3-4 with Hartman in there for the one year.

If I have to choose between the two, I'm leaning toward Ruggiero long term at this point if there is reciprocal interest.

You've said it all. There's a contingent at the top at ND that don't care for the football team and don't care for their success. It holds us back from succeeding when they decide to shut the pocket book and limit the kinds of athletes they'll accept. Then ND will turn around and squeeze the blood from a stone when it comes to donators and overcharging for merch. It's depressing.

Paul Chryst was actually a very good OC at Wisconsin. Not so much HC the last couple years but some of that was recruiting.

EDIT:

Interesting tidbit from Nagle's resume:

2004-05, Dodge City CC (Kansas) (QB)
2006-09, Northwestern State (QB/WR)

Let's assume that Ludwig didn't really want the job.

That doesn't make me feel better.

I don't want to live in a world where a coordinator would rather be at Utah than ND.

No offense to Utah. But, come on...

ND lost the plot. Awhile ago. We were just in denial.

Frigging meltdown of epic proportions.

So, I've heard a ton but nothing confirmed. A few "Sources"; tweets by 2 reporters, heck maybe only one.

MF essentially shut down the leaks at ND. With that, the traditional beat reporters are as lost as the emotional fanbase.

I'm just wondering where this is going but it is an interesting ride.

The circumstances are different than an OC that had a choice between two jobs and picked one over the other.

Utah is very specific and unique the person in question, and he's currently employed there. It's his third stint there and they have a head coach who has been there since he replaced URBAN MEYER when he left for Florida. He didn't really choose Utah over ND, he choose to stay at Utah.

If this was Johnny O'Malley from Mt. Carmel HS in Chicago and he had a choice between ND and Utah with zero ties to Utah, yeah, I'd be kinda like "WTF?"

Is the buyout excuse just a smokescreen? Maybe he just wasn’t the guy. Could be MF has someone else in mind and JS is taking the heat. Just spitballing, but the number isn’t THAT absurd considering what gets thrown around. Tommy was making 2 mil last year. 2.8 buyout plus couple mil in salary for Ludwig. I know he’s a good coach but how many thought he was a must have a couple of weeks ago. Hopefully there’s a plan.
