If it’s for a promotion like what was said I don’t see that being the case. If he leaves it’s for the NFL

He’s on record as saying that he wants to be a college head coach.

Could be a new OC bringing along their own OL coach or that TR has departed. It was my impression he returned at TR's behest.

Cpt Obvious here

Lots of coaches leave for a variety of reasons. But when there is a coordinator position open, it can be a trigger to leave because they didn’t get promoted to the position or they didn’t feel respected/appreciated because they felt they weren’t given a fair shot.

I understand. He asked for theories. Him just wanting to retire is definitely a believable theory. Not suggesting I know anything.

Sorry, I shouldn't have quoted the post that I did because my comment wasn't directed to HH's retirement. Was more a hypothetical why another assistant coach might be leaving.

Things were remarkably stable this cycle prior to Rees leaving but I think we need to get used to high turnover of assistants.
The job now is just such a grind, and anyone who does it well at Notre Dame will get a good look for coordinator and NFL jobs.

So? Why now?
My guess:

Harry stuck around because of the familiarity he had with Tommy.

Tommy left and Harry then considered retiring. He decided to wait out some of the OC interviews and see where he fit.

Marcus interviewed Ludwig and he now appears to be the guy, and I imagine Harry spoke with Ludwig about his intentions moving forward and amicably agreed that the best move was for Harry to move on and Ludwig could pursue his own OL coach.

If we knew Hiestand was leaving, I would have called Grimes about the OC job.

Would assume the other name is DMC as well. Can’t be surprised if you followed his hiring at all, it’s been reported/said from Day 1 he took the job in hopes of getting upward mobility. I’m sure he’s hoping to get a look and agent is shopping his name, doesn’t mean he’ll get one.

Well, isn't that guy from Kansas or Kentucky an OL/OC? Make that call and get Streeter for QB?

Agree. What college OC jobs are open right now? He doesn't seem to be a candidate for ours, but some P5 OC job would seem like the logical next move for him. Unless he wants to go back to coaching RBs in the NFL?

I will go one step further. Harry seems to have an affinity for Notre Dame. Maybe he came back for to help Tommy and the offense. Maybe Harry was part of the interview process with Ludwig, and in meeting with him, Harry felt that Ludwig's plan for the offense was good and he could go back into retirement, knowing that his o line would be in good hands. That is what I am telling myself.

Except Sampson says Harry retired a week ago. 🤷‍♂️

NCAA rule you can’t have more than one coach double dipping salary and social security. Ludwig to ND confirmed.
