Wasn’t Justin Herbert there the year before Moorhead got there? I have a feeling J Herb had a lot to do with that success.

His QBs were Tyler Shough and Anthony Brown, two god awful quarterbacks. The fact Anthony Brown started an NFL game this year is bananas because when he was at BC, he may have been the worst QB ND faced in years.

Simply being hired by Saban doesn't make Rees a great coach. Pete Golding and Bill O'Brien were hated by Bama fans because they were bad coaches who wasted talent. Rees is lot like Lane Kiffin who got coaching jobs he didn't deserve early in his career based on nepotism.
Bill O'Brien is a really good football coach. He got hired by Saban and Belichick. 2 pretty good coaches. 😉

Candle is on the Miami wish list so you better get after him quickly, if you're interested.
My Miami buddy text me yesterday saying Mario has been after Candle for a yr. He was almost a lock to end up at Miami, now Candle might want to interview for ND OC job.

What do you guys think about the Ohio State offense?

Isn't it power running football with verticle passing?

Their offense looks great. Idk if it’s the scheme or because they have a 1st round QB and Wilson/Olave/JSN/Harrison on the same roster.

Hartline leaving OSU for the same position at ND would be a head scratcher. It’s not a jump up, nor is it even a lateral move.

I'm just wondering why Candle's name never came up as a possibility?

In 2022, Candle's Rockets passed for 3,144 yards with 31 touchdowns and rushed for 2,487 yards with 23 scores. 16 different receivers caught passes while 10 rushers got carries, with seven of them scoring at least one rushing TD. In a Candle offense, everyone gets their touches.

Candle is known for having good relationships with his players and collaborating well with other coaches.

I can’t see how anyone would want to be at Miami. They are bad bad. Anyone taking that job will be on an incredibly short leash.

Candle was Cristobal's first choice last year before he was told no (and subsequently turned down by Rees). He's after him again this year, and I know they've been speaking about the job the past week.

Candle does not have a great reputation as a person and would be surprised if he was someone Freeman would want on staff

Don't get the Leftwich talk. He just got canned by TB and Brady was running the offense.
They had to fire someone. After what was by far and away their worst offensive season since he's been there. He was getting head coaching interviews this time last year. Brady's retirement, unretirement shit show, Arians leaving, Gronkowski finally hanging it up, everything just kind of went wrong for them. Someone had to go. Bowles wasn't going to fire himself.

That being said, he shouldn't be taking a step back into the college game. He should get another chance at an NFL OC job. Rightfully so.

Would love Ryan Grubb or Ludwig, but I have a feeling it's going to be a curveball like Lindgren or someone in house.

When’s the last time Saban had to fire an OC…has it ever happened? McElwain, Kiffin, Sark, Locksley, Daboll, O’Brien…who am I leaving out?

He doesn't fire coordinators. He processes them out and connects them to other places. He does this to get the best analysts and support he can

As someone that likes Candle, the OC candidate.

Anything worth sharing? I think there is a few of us that are intrigued.

I have two friends that worked for him at Toledo (one a coordinator) that said he treats people like absolute garbage. He's been described as an arrogant prick to me by many.

Didn't Candle sign a contract extension last week with Toledo? He's obviously on the move if that's the case. LOL.

How do we think Andy Ludwig handles recruiting? That's such a huge component of this.

As someone who has played under Jason candle that is farther from the truth. I absolutely loved playing under him. By far my most favorite coach I’ve ever had. Highly competitive and will coach you hard but will also joke around with you.

I for one am not on the Moorehead train, Unfortunately that's who its going to be I feel like.
Same. I think the pro-Moorhead talk focuses on Penn State and less on everything that he’s done since.

This. Belichick does the same. Believe he’s only ever fired a 1-2 coaches ever and never a coordinator. Only one I can think of off the top of my head is the OL coach who got fired after 2015 season when Brady almost got killed in Denver in the conf champ game when the center was tipping the snaps. The O’Brien situation is interesting. There were rumblings about him leaving Bama to go to the Pats as far back as a full year ago. BB/Saban never steal coaches under contract from each other and it was rumored there was an understanding that O’Brien would leave after this past season. Which does line up with the Patriots very odd OC situation they had this past season. Not sure he got processed out more than this was the plan for some time now once his contract was up.

Yup. And BOB is probably best suited for NFL game.

I think most head coaches "process out" assistants anymore. Most reports on coaches leaving in the NFL and college these days contain the words "contract wasn't renewed" or "mutually parting of ways." Train wrecks like Scott Frost and Nathaniel Hackett are about the only guys who get fired.

Head coaches, GM's, private sector managers, hell, even school principals realize it works out better for all parties to use a euphemism.

Anyone know what the situation is in Arizona? They have an OC listed and also a passing game coordinator/QB coach on staff. Whoever is responsible I really like what they did with Jayden de Laura this season.

Per Pete, on the II pod, said that play calling experience is a high priority for the hiring. That might narrow it down a bit. I’m not sure if someone like Brian Johnson has experience calling plays.

Lets be honest a monkey could call plays next year with the offense we should have and still average 30 ppg I'm looking for someone whose gonna come in and put up 40 plus a game and blow the doors off teams.
