They're 5 stars unil they commit to us - Sites gave Chris Martin crap for commiting early. I have to believe we get at least 1 commit this week.

A top-5 class would be great but that would mean we would have to sign, in my opinion, at least three more 4 stars and two 5 stars... But back to the thread, I think our next recruit will be either Bernard, Cooper or Nix.

Ok with Gio on board we can not be dicking around anymore because space is tight. If Jimmy and Golden return along with the expected 5th yearguys we have room for 9 more players

Anthony Barr (Must get)
Louis Nix (Must get)
One more corner (Shaw, Riggs, Joyner, Hurd)
2 More Safeties (Riley, Parker, Amerson)
Weare in good shape with Cooper (WR or S)
at least 3 more O-lineman (Henderson, Linder, James, Stone, Kuandjio)

Jason I honestly think Kyle Prater is going to come to Notre Dame as well. I have this gut feeling about him. Seantrel Henderson would be a great get. If any players would decommit from us who do you think they would be? I think Barr and Linder are shoe ins. Joyner would be huge. Man this could turn out to be one ridiculous recruiting class.

I agree with you here, we are getting very tight on space. This is going to get really interesting. 1. Gio says he is now going to work on Linder, Joyner, and Riggs which is great. 2. Cooper said he would decide after his visit to Illinois (this weekend). 3. Two guys (Shaw and someone else) are announcing on Christmas, Gaston on his birthday (Nov.) 4. The UA game is Jan 2 for those who will announce there (Maybe Christian Jones, Toney Hurd, Jordon James, Joyner, Nix, Riley) 5. The AA game is Jan 9 for those who will announce there (Maybe Seantrel?)

Clearly we leave room IMO for someone like Seantrel if we are in the top 2. But after that random info how much does this come down to first come first serve at the end???

With some of the incoming players planning to enroll early, and since EE's count against the year priors scholarship limits, would we be able to get more than 9?

No, 85 max scholarship limit for the team. I believe Jason is making the assumption that 3 - 5th year guys come back, no one transfers, etc. That leaves 9 spots left.

Do we have to let fifth years come back? What I mean is it ND who has to offer the 5th year, or can the players just say they want to come back? I'm asking because, although I love this team, some of these guys (D-backs I'm looking at you) haven't played that well. What's everyone's opinion? I know I'd feel awful if I was in this situation and wasn't offered another year. Ethically it isn't right, but no one can say these guys haven't underperformed. Even Dave Shinskie looked good against us. I guess another question would be is it the players or the scheme, either way I think Charlie needs to find out this offseason and decide which is better for the program. For the record, if the guys are doing what they need to in the classroom and are eligible for a fifth year and want to come back, I'd find it difficult to turn them down.

We will need a center so Wenger will get a 5th year.

I have a feeling T. Rob moves to left tackle. That leaves the right guard postion open. Because of this C. Stewart get a 5th year.

The DB's are not the strength of the defense right now so I would rather want an upper classmen playing than a freshman or sophmore. Thats why I think D. Walls comes back. If he leaves we only have Blanton and Gray with significant experience so I think it would be smart to bring him back.

Man I really thought our secondary would be the strength of that defense. Blanton doesn't look like the same player as last year. I was excited about that kid this year, he had a very good season last season. What worries me is we are the 117th ranked team against the pass in NCAA, and we haven't really played a great passing team. The team we play this week is ranked 118th so thats nice to hear. Because the team we destroyed week 1 is ranked 119th.

I think everyone believes that our DB's are suddenly horrible but I do not think that is the case. I think it all comes down to scheme. Not sure Tenuta is the best fit for us.

It's either the scheme or we just look slow out there, I'm waiting to watch a game and say, our DB's look pretty athletic out there.

Scheme and Safetys because I don't care what you say McCarthy makes plays hes a play maker. But in the grand scheme of things he is an average safety at best. Piss poor cover guy. Gets put in the right spots to make plays. He is good around the line of scrimmage, but coverage wise he kills us. Don't even get me started on Harrison Smith.

WhoDeyIrish-right on the $$$$$, the athletes are there but the scheme is not a fit. I'll bet these guys would like to go man more and turn it loose. Strong Safety for McCarthy is better than Free Safety but now he has to do what they need. I do think the atletes are very good but something is not right.

I tend to agree with you on this, I would say he is above average in talent, with a knack for the big play. Compare him to Taylor Mays, he is clearly not on that lvl. McCarthy is the a throwback to the '05 team; A team that had a ton of over-achievers.

The defense to me feels like the offense did in '07. There is a scheme in place, but not the personel to make it work.

I think Tenuta is a good coach, and I think he has a good defensive philosophy; he just needs the correct athletes to run it. I think you will see a big jump in talent and in production on the defensive side of the ball in the next 1-2 years. At the same time, Tenuta schemes will begin to work better and better and he'll look like the genius we want him to be.

(that being said, I can see the argument that tenuta seems to be rigid in his defensive philsophy, almost forcing players that dont fit into the scheme, or not changing up the scheme to fit personel. But he was hired for the way he does things, and its usually worked in the past. I have no reason to think he can't re-create it again....)

With absolutely no insight, or inside knowledge... just gut feeling... I'm thinking Barr, Allen, and Nix (no particular order).

One prediction: If Gaston commits before Allen, Allen loses his place.

If Nix comes, then Gaston & Allen play chicken to see who pulls trigger first - math says he who blinks is odd man out.
