But in the grand scheme of things he is an average safety at best. Piss poor cover guy. Gets put in the right spots to make plays. He is good around the line of scrimmage, but coverage wise he kills us.

The guy has 5 ints, 59 tackles (next closest is 40). Piss poor? If he is average, I will take an entire team of these "average" guys. Maybe he isn't the fastest guy on the field, but that alone doesn't make him just average. Nothing personal, but that post makes no sense. Who "puts" him in the spot to make plays?

No SO far off... without 5th year we have more room for commits. Question has been running as to whether we get 25 or 28 recruits . If we get normal and expected 5th years we definately do not see more 25.

I agree 100% one or two interceptions and 30 tackles equals average. He might be an average athlete because he's not the fastest guy on the field but he's an exceptional football player. There are some things in football you can't coach into a player, it's just instinct. and McCarthy has great instincts and persistance and consistancy and this is what makes him anything but average on the field.

Mom's about to come in here and tell us to get back on topic - next commit... remember?

You know, in some situations, a bunch of grown men talking about high school boys could wind us up on Dateline or with subpoenas.

Tell us about the scheme that you would run in another thread, coach.
Sorry to offend you, I don't know what to run but what they are running isn't working. The ND pass defense is currently 117th in the nation at 282.43 yds/game. If you think that's great then fine. I never gloated about having knowledge greater than the coaches, however the statistics are not good. Dave Shinskie is not a good quarterback. We are opportunistic, against good teams you need more than that IMO. Stats through week 8: Notre Dame Football Ranking Summary

BTW someone mentioned 5th years so i posed the question rather than making a new thread and clogging the board. I really don't care what you think, if my questions and posts are so off topic then skip them.

Next commit is tough, it seems like we are going to have to wait and see for a lot of guys to take their other visits and re-visit us. I really thought Nix would pull the trigger, even before Bernard but he didn't. We seem to be hot on the trail for a lot of defensive backs, so I'll say we get another one of those.

I'm ready for Barr, a BIG fast safety, a DT (Nix), another O line guy.. that leaves 4 spots... with Eifler's back surgery... I'd even be happy with another TE - who is left?
I'd get Cooper on top of Fiedorowicz - sounds like an ND guy - at least name wise - from one Pol to another.
C.J. Fiedorowicz - College Football Recruiting 2010 - ESPN
Then hold out for some 5 star needs... Henderson, Prater, and a Christian Jones (4*). I don't know if that means no room for Gaston/Allen if Nix comes in...
Wheres that leave Linder? So much candy on the shelf and dad only gave me.......

I'm hoping for Matt James, maybe James Hurst will change his mind and stay in Indiana. UNC is 4-3. He's a big player, he'd fill a need and its close to home. Does anyone know if we're still making his phone ring?

I was wondering the same thing about Hurst, I thought I read somewhere going down South was a big factor?? His brother is a freshman TE at Mississippi State, maybe they both just wanted to get away from the cold. He'd be awesome to get though, we have a bunch of other O-line targets. He committed early so who knows. I said I thought our next commit would be a d-back because of all the targets we have there, but would really like one of the top o-linemen to commit soon. No inside info but I'd say James and Linder are our best bets.

Isn't it bad that our safety is leading the team in tackles. I said he is piss poor in coverage. He is around the ball a lot I will give him that. Lets just put it this way I think a lot of the 5 ints were mistakes made from the QB rather than McCarthy actually making a play if you understand what I'm saying. Well whatever you think...I mean we are ranked 117th in passing in the whole entire country. That is embarrassing to me. Just the different coverages that the defense will be in sometimes puts him in good spots to make plays. Lets just put it this way, I love the kid, because I love heart and I admire the way he plays the game. He is a good player, but he isn't great. This is what I don't get about some Irish fans sometimes...He has 59 tackles leading the team, that in my opinion is a bad thing. He shouldn't be leading our team in tackles. Obviously players are catching the ball and he is making a lot of tackles. Tackles are overrated unless your a linebacker. Trevor Laws had 100 tackles as a defensive lineman that is extremely impressive. I'm just saying Kyle McCarthy might be good player, but he isn't great by any means especially in coverage. Wouldn't you guys love to have a dominate safety hanging back there. Ed Reed, Palamalu, Mays, Eric Berry type guy. We have never had that. Zibby was close. I'm sorry but Safety is the biggest problem on our team. I obviously have no idea what I'm talking about. But whoever said that I promise I have more knowledge about football the game in general in my pinky finger than you do in your whole brain. Kyle McCarthy leading the team in tackles tells me 2 things one teams know they can throw the ball on us 2 we are weak at linebacker because obviously running backs are getting to the second level. I think we are improving greatly at linebacker and on the defensive line but safety in my opinion remains a big big problem. Alright thats my 2 cents. People I'm giving you my opinions on things, you can think what you want, I like the kid I think McCarthy is a good player, he makes some plays here in there. I'm playing a little bit of devils advocate here, but I'm just trying to be an asset to this forum. I'm not trying to be a dick or rub people the wrong way I'm just giving my general observations. I'm a realest, but also a huge Notre Dame homer.

Regarding Hurst, add to his UNC connection the fact that his brother has transferred to Carolina. There's an incredibly slim chance that we could sway him.

Yeah I agree, I'm not too worried that we only having one offensive lineman commit at this point. Obviously I'd love for us to get a few more, Henderson, Linder guys like that. I think we have recruited enough guys in previous years, but still we need a few more.

Gaston is pledging on his bday, think its Nov 4th. Unless someone commits over the weekend, the 4th we get Bruce. Go Irish.

Hurd's commited.

I guess Gaston or Allen is the favorite to commit next.

Gaston would have to wait for the end of Novermber for his Bday. Beau Allen... you are officially on the clock.

Nix... HURRY THE HELL UP AND SAY YES YOU SOB!

Gaston and Allen are the only 3 stars left on the board. Most insiders believe Nix will flip at any moment.

Whoever here thought that our past two commits would be Gio Bernard followed by Toney Hurd, raise your hand.

In all seriousness, i wanted to take Gio of my update list a long time ago. I never did because so many on here kept bringing him up, but that was a surprise.

I started thinking thinking about Prater, Hendersen, Ego Ferguson, Nix, Barr, Joyner, Linder or Gaston and I started having chest pains and not being able to sleep waiting for the Purdue game and... it's not even November 2009...
