Hopefully there isn't a message board for him to moderate, lol.

Kind of surprised by that. Sports Illustrated is certainly a cachet name, one of the best, but my opinion on their cfb output lately has been....... yikes.

They’ve lost their best CFB writers to The Atheltic

I'm not sure that Mike would take him back. I prefer Jamie anyways

I prefer reading Jamie vs listening to him. He needs to work on his speaking skills. Imagine if you had to take a shot every time Jamie said “you know”.

Jamie >>>>>>>>>>>>>Bryan
Lucky I just scrolled through the page and realized you already mentioned Driskell’s last day prior to me asking about him. Rookie mistake!
Anyways, I grew to like listening to him over time. It was almost unbearable how he constantly had to contradict everything Lou said on the podcasts, but he got better at that over time. Jamie is pretty good too, but IMO nobody is better at breaking down matchups and getting to the bottom of why things were working/weren’t working during a game than Driskell.

I would guess it’s with Maven/SI. I know they approached some other guys on the beat with job offers recently.

No one going to give me credit for calling this?

Bottom line is I think it's a good fit for Driskell. Certainly better than having to operate in the world of managing message boards and trying to get "scoops." They approached multiple reports on the ND beat about it, and while I know why some guys turned it down I think its a job Driskell could be very successful in. I think it'll be closer to The Athletic than to what we see on the recruiting-focused sites.

I've been on record here as not a fan of the way he operated at ISD/Rivals, but let's be very clear... he is no EJ Holland. Signore Frappuccino was the most universally loathed person to have ever been on the ND beat. Driskell is not even close to being in that category.

Props to you! I honestly missed your post as I scroll to the most recent posts of the day yesterday. I don’t get on that message board. Not familiar w/ EJ Holland. Was he one of the recent BGI hires assigned to cover recruiting? If so, I think he & the other new hire had a short-lived pod as well.

As far as Driskell’s role in the BGI pod, they’ve gone w/ Todd Burlage & Somogyi for now.

Maybe it’s just me, but Pete Sampson is borderline unbearable right now

Plus, he has a horrible “feel” on what’s going to happen whether it be recruiting, score predictions, etc.

Also, can Mike Tirico get a lifetime contract? The man is brilliant.

I'm one of his biggest detractors, and it doesn't make up for the bad jobs done in the past but..... *deep breath* Doug Flutie has been doing well this season thus far.

Was just thinking this. But.... Torico and Simms would give all the feels

Tirico is fantastic. His call on Julian Love’s td versus NC State still gives me chills.

Definitely. Wish he wrote for a different program. Dude acts like he's the one winning ball games and the staff needs to heed his advice. ND wins 22 games over 2 years and now some our writers act like they are part of the success. Let me just be clear, I don't believe ISD has done this at all.

Actually, this site between 2016-2018 was by far the most tuned in on what the problems were and the intelligent discussions on what should be done.

It shocks me the level of idiocy that exists on the web when it comes to ND communities.

Seems to be a saturated environment. I think the only way this would have possibly worked would have been to utilize the strong SI name.

Maven isn't going to provide anything else that isn't already available.

So... can we take credit for the wins?

Maven's goal... from a corporate structure standpoint... is to be a "Gawker" (i.e. a lot of different brands on one network) with SI the equivalent of their "Deadspin" (i.e. their sports-focused property). They have bought a lot of properties that aren't sports related.

Where they are going to fail is that they were planning on leveraging the SI brand to legitimize an army of bloggers who will all run team sites. In a sense, the goal of these sites is to be a direct competitor to a place like 247 but with a little bit less emphasis on "scoop" and "insider" reporting. So they fire a bunch of competent professionals and have largely hired a mix of experienced beat writers/reporters who in turn are leveraging a lot of cheap/free labor to build out "staffs" for each site... and they thought people wouldn't really notice, but instead they've created a huge amount of backlash from the niche of people that would hypothetically read their content.

I saw a few tweets of staff saying it's been great and "Oh by the way, if you're hiring, i'm interested." lol
