ND worked the ball well into Vaughn for 2 as ND hit 30 points at 3:30 of the 3Q. UL answered with a pair of 3s the first from Shook their 6-5 BIG.

Gilbert had a step on a layup and scooped the shot underhand ... into the bottom of the backboard. Sigh.

Now 66-38

TWO FUTURE IRISH TABBED TO PLAY IN JORDAN BRAND CLASSIC
MARSHALL & CAMPBELL RECOGNIZED

CHICAGO – The Notre Dame women’s basketball team will once again have a presence at the Jordan Brand Classic, now in its 19th year. The JBC, which is a celebratory game featuring the next generation of basketball standouts, has invited Irish signees Natalija Marshall and Alli Campbell to both participate.

Marshall, a 6-5 forward from Middle Village, N.Y., ranked 32nd in her class by ESPN. Marshall led Christ the King to the New York State Class AA Federation championship last season when she averaged 13.4 points, 7.2 rebounds and 4.1 blocks per game.

In addition, Marshall has racked up over 75 wins for Christ the King over her prep career, before her senior year was cut short due to injury.

Campbell, a 5-11 guard from Bellwood, Penn., recently became the all-time leading scorer in District 6 history, surpassing the original record of 2,675 career points. She has helped her Bellwood-Antis Blue Devils to a 16-0 mark thus far this season.

Campbell has led her school to 2A state titles the past two seasons and was the 2019 USA Today Pennsylvania Player of the Year.

Current Irish who are Jordan Brand Classic alumni include Sam Brunelle, Anaya Peoples, Katlyn Gilbert and Destinee Walker

For the first time, the JBC’s marquee event will be held in Chicago at the Wintrust Arena. The double-header will be held on Friday, March 27th with the Girls Game tipping off at 6:00 p.m., followed by the Boys Game at 8:00 p.m. CST.

The Girls Game was established in 2015 and has been hosted by Jordan Brand family member Maya Moore. Tickets will be available at www.Ticketmaster.com and the Wintrust Arena Box Office on Monday, February 17th at 11:00am CST. Visit www.WintrustArena.com or contact the Wintrust Arena Box Office via phone at (312)791-6900 or email at boxoffice@wintrustarena.com.

I'm still puzzled by our inability to get the most "top" of the class recruits. Campbell sounds very "encouraging" as she must be able to score from all over --- and we REALLY need the three shooters.

But Marshall ? 6'5" sounds good but the stats sound developmental rather than mostly developed already. 6'5" in girls high school ball should average a lot more than seven rebounds a game, and probably more than 4 blocked shots.

But 6'5" is good to have.

Those stats are for her Junior Year of HS.

I've seen nothing on an injury.

While she's tall, she's lithe. I haven't seen a date on any of the pictures but she appears very thin, neck, arms, etc. She needs bulking up and weight training based on the pictures

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame women’s basketball squad (10-16, 5-9) will end its slate inside Purcell Pavilion with a three-game homestand starting Thursday, Feb. 20, when Virginia Tech (19-6, 9-5) rolls to town. The Irish will battle the Hokies at a later tip time, 8 p.m. ET, airing live on RSN affiliates. For a full clearance sheet, click here.

HISTORY WITH VIRGINIA TECH

Notre Dame and Virginia Tech will battle on the hardwood for the 13th time, with the Fighting Irish leading 11-1 in the series. The series began back on Jan. 3, 2001. Furthermore, the Irish have never lost at home to the Hokies, boasting a 6-0 advantage. The Irish also possess a seven-game win streak.

MABREY BOWL 2.0

Last season, we received the first edition of the Mabrey Bowl via an on-court battle between Notre Dame senior Marina and Virginia Tech freshman Dara. Marina’s Irish came out on top, 80-51 in Blacksburg, with Marina outscoring Dara, 15-5.

However, Mabrey Bowl 2.0 puts a different spin on the sister rivalry. This time out, it will be Dara on the court vs. Assistant Coach Michaela on the sideline.

ACC FRESHMEN OF THE YEAR CANDIDATES

Katlyn Gilbert leads all ACC freshmen in scoring, averaging 13.5 ppg, while Sam Brunelle sits right behind at 13.0 ppg. In fact, the Irish would have boasted the top three scoring spots for freshmen when you add in Peoples’ 12.6 ppg. The next highest is Virginia Tech’s Elizabeth Kitley at 11.6.

When looking at double-digit scoring games, Gilbert leads the way there as well with 22. Clemson’s Amari Robinson follows next with 16, while Virginia Tech’s Elizabeth Kitley sits with 14.

Nationally, among freshmen at power-five schools, Brunelle’s scoring average ranks 8th while Gilbert ranks 7th. In addition, Brunelle leads all ACC freshmen in the Points + Assists + Rebounds/Game category at 20.5.

Next, there only two freshmen pairs in all of Division-I to both average 13.0 ppg or higher –> ND’s Brunelle and Gilbert & Fresno State’s Haley & Hanna Cavinder.

All-in-all, Brianna Turner, who remains the program’s lone ACC Rookie of the Year, averaged 13.8 ppg when she won it back in 2015.

DESTINEE – 20 POINT GAMES

For the first time of her career, Walker achieved three straight games with 20+ points from Feb. 6-13. Walker totaled 69 points in said span, averaging 23.0 ppg on 48.9 percent shooting. She was also 8-of-17 from three (.471) and 15-of-17 (.882) from the line.

Walker is still on the best stretch of her season, posting five straight with double-digit points.

She leads the Irish in 20+ scoring performances with 8, which also sets a new career best – previous was four set her sophomore year at UNC (2016-17). Her 8 games are tied for 4th in the ACC.

FULFILLING HER DESTINEE

As alluded above, what a month it’s been for Walker. In fact, only Virginia’s Jocelyn Willoughby (22.3 ppg) and Duke’s Haley Gorecki (19.4 ppg) are having a better February than Walker (19.2 ppg) amongst ACC players.

VAUGHN TOUGH ON THE ROAD

Mikki Vaughn has recorded four separate occasions in which she has reached double-digit points by halftime. What’s interesting to note is the fact that all four instances have been on the road.

– 13 at Pitt on Jan. 2
– 10 at Syracuse on Jan. 5
– 14 at Duke on Jan. 23
– 10 at Georgia Tech on Feb. 2

When diving deeper, six of Vaughn’s seven double-digit scoring performances have been on the road in league play. She continued that trend with a 16-point outing at No. 9 Louisville on Feb. 16.

3PT FG% DEFENSE

The Irish lead ACC schools in league play in three-point field goal percentage defense, limiting opposition to .262 shooting percentage from beyond the arc.

ANNUAL PINK ZONE GAME SUNDAY

Notre Dame’s Pink Zone initiative has made a tremendous impact on our local community over the last ten years by providing funds for education, screenings, support and research for breast cancer.

Once again this year, fans bid on player warmup shirts and the coaches polos, with the winners placing their loved one’s name on the back. Both the shooting shirts and polos will be worn for Sunday’s game.

At halftime, we will welcome all cancer survivors to join us on the court for a special recognition. This year we will have a speed painter presentation.

First time since season's beginning that I've been able to watch.

Very disturbing. I think that I could count the number of "controlled" plays on one hand. Wow. Almost hysterically out-of-stability offense. Looks like desperation offense.

Also, defensively, Muffet feels that she must play junk defenses most of the time. These two very odd things creates a frantic disorganized game on both sides. VT has gained control of more plays than our team, so they lead easily.

Our last year's team would beat this VT team by 40 points --- maybe more. It shows how far the "team" quality of this team has dissipated.

Can't wait for this season to end. I do not believe that the team can gel before the season ends. Since two starters will graduate, even if Peoples and Abby can come back, I wonder if Muffet can even turn this around NEXT year.

Gilbert finally decided to play a little Bball especially on the boards. Some intensity by Walker --- not well matched by her teammates generally. Surprisingly little Bball IQ in the team. Ex: we were in a situation where only threes would do, only Walker seemed to realize that. Also surprisingly, team played better (on this night) when Muffet took MVaughn out.

IF only Jackie had returned for her final season. Scoring, rebounding, and general play would all be much better.

Agree with your comments.

It appears ND will only lose one starter, Sniezek. Walker applied for a sixth year and according to McGraw it appears it's going to happen.

Notre Dame Women's B-Ball Notebook: Destinee Walker Plans 6th-Year Return
Lou Somogyi • BlueAndGold
Senior Editor

https://notredame.rivals.com/news/notre-dame-women-s-b-ball-notebook-destinee-walker-plans-6th-year-return

That future is expected to include current leading scorer Destinee Walker (14.5 points per game) returning for a sixth season in 2020-21. The North Carolina graduate transfer was sidelined all of 2017-18 with an injury, and played in only four early-season contests in 2018-19 before sitting out with another injury.

“It’s already been approved by NCAA,” head coach Muffet McGraw stated prior to Wednesday’s practice. “She won’t be going through Senior Night (versus North Carolina on Feb. 27).”

A Notre Dame spokesman noted afterwards the decision actually hasn’t been made official yet by the NCAA, but the prevailing attitude is positive.

“When I got here I applied for it right away,” said Walker, who will be in the prestigious MSA program in the Mendoza College of Business. “To be approved, I’m very grateful for that. I love this program, I love this school in the few months that I’ve been here already.”
