Remarkable lack of defense to set up BC's winning score.

Coach's alignment or player lack of execution?

Heartbreaker.

Didn't see it so can't comment on the last play, but one guess would be "tired bodies, tired minds, and the coach's last words --- 'don't foul' --- ringing too obsessively in fearful players' heads."

I've seen that many times in games. This being a makeshift team has some (few) tough players but is not tough-minded as a full integrated team. That sort of play couldn't happen vs our last several years teams --- even Abby would have probably seen and stopped it this year. It takes courage and intensity to play defense at such a time.

Mike,

Here's a replay of the winning shot. The eventual shooter, dark hair with headband, is at the near side, mid-lane, setting up a pick on Mik, or Walker who is chasing a BC player, blonde with headband, running baseline from far side to near. The shooter, Guy, slips around Mik, across the lane (with a little help like a wide receiver) gaining separation from Mik. BC's #5 inbounds from nearside, first looking at the blonde running baseline and appears to make a feint in that direction, note Cole looking to her left towards the blonde. #5 then launches a looping pass to Guy running to the far side of the lane. Guy catches the pass, turns, and launches a left handed shot high off the glass, drops down, hits the inside rim and falls for the win.

Most of the criticism of the play was centered on ND failing to put a player on the inbound passer. ND had 6-4 Cosgrove and the more athletic leaper, volleyball player 6-2 Baer both on the bench. Either could have harassed the inbound passer and blocked her line of sight. Instead she had an unobstructed line of sight to any of her 4 teammates. BC also called a timeout before the play to see ND's defense.

The Eagles executed a perfect play, feigning the pick and baseline play as well as the high arching pass and the flawless, pass reception, spin, jump and shot making the winning basket.

Do they accomplish all those things in 1.6 seconds with Cosgrove or Baer jumping with raised waiving arms blocking the line of sight to guy crossing mid-lane?

BC was 2-22 with long shots on the night. Their scoring came inside the paint, the win came inside the paint. Take away the mid-lane area and they have to take a shot from the top of the key over Sam or bounce pass to the blonde headband who has to get the ball, put it on the floor, then take a turn around jump shot.

Our defensive setup allowed BC to take the highest percentage shot of those available with 1.6 seconds to play. That's why I posted in the game thread coaching error or lack of player execution. I can't fault Mik for her movements.

I look forward to your observations after you've had an opportunity to review the play.

I would have genuinely liked to do this but it wouldn't let my computer load.

The play sounds like one of the traditional plays from out of bounds (fake pressure towards the near edge to clear some space across court to lob a player with a height advantage.) The play takes a great pass (which usually can't go on if a harassing player is in the passer's face.)

Muffet must have thought that they didn't have that pass in them or that our backside defense would make that very hard to complete without contest.

The key about second-guessing her on this would be where she played the "extra" defender? (if it was a zone this play should be almost impossible, and it seems apparent that some of our players were "chasing.") Could it have been one of Muffet's famous "junk" defenses like a double-teamed player, box-and-one, or triangle-and-two?. If so, and BC goes to a player not boxed nor triangled, then they scored with what she thought was a lesser threat with a great pass.

But I'm just burbling. I might have stationed my volleyball player centrally (VBall players are usually jumpers) and told her to be brave to the ball --- without fouling. On a looping pass, such a player should make that very hard to complete. I'd have placed an athlete on the ball if it was on the baseline, but on the side is a bit different --- depends on who and what you're worried about.

edit: I got to see (finally) a still shot of the initial (pre-pass) positioning. I notice what for me are TWO defensive errors already.

1. The baseline defender supposedly guarding the baseline cutter has taken a VERY poor orientation to her player, and IS beaten baseline already. Seeing this put HUGE pressure on Mik to hesitate to see where this problem is going. Mik would see this initially as a breakaway screen to the near corner for a shot, probably uncontested unless she (Mik) did the contesting --- but then Destiny must immediately shout "Switch" or whatever Muffet does on exchanges. Better positioning and good communication should have stopped this --- Destiny for instance could legitimately stand right in the road of Mik's player, and wriggle around a bit to get in pass interrupting position, while Mik takes her new player to the corner.

2. The second thing is the "extra" player we have. This is the person who is ball high and closest to the sideline, though not very near. She is not looking at the ball at all, but worse is not in any sort of athletic stance --- making any sort of rapid quickness to the ball out of the question. It's almost as if she thinks that her only concern is if one of the two top-of-circle players will curl her way and she then move to get involved. Well, maybe that's mainly what Muffet was worried about, but the extra defender can do a lot more that that if she takes an athletic stance, watches both ball and man, and clogs areas of danger. In this situation, it is probably not possible for BC to pass it in and get it back, and still get off a shot, so you don't HAVE to guard the ball --- but you should at least guard SOMEBODY. That's why I might have suggested a low lane clogger/jumper.

IRISH LOSE 56-55 IN FINAL SECOND TO BOSTON COLLEGE
WALKER LOGS THIRD STRAIGHT GAME WITH 20+ WITH 21 TONIGHT

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Notre Dame women’s basketball squad (10-15, 5-8) looked poised for its fourth win in row, but Boston College (14-10, 7-6) erased a 15-point deficit late in the second half, then scored at the buzzer to snatch a 56-55 victory inside Conte Forum.

For the first time in her career, Destinee Walker recorded three straight games with 20 or more points, logging 21 on Thursday night. Walker scored a go-ahead layup with 1.8 seconds on the clock, but Boston College’s Emma Guy hit the heart-breaker under the basket after an advanced ball timeout.

Gilbert was the lone other Irish player in double figures with 10 points, marking her 22nd on the year.

How It Happened

The first half was highlighted by a strong defensive front by the Fighting Irish, limiting the Eagles to 6-of-34 (.176) shooting. Combine that with a big 18-3 scoring run in the second quarter and the result was a 32-21 halftime lead.

In the first, the Irish defense recorded a stretch in which they didn’t allow a Boston College field goal from 9:35 to 0:25, with the Eagles going 0-for-17 in said stretch. However, Notre Dame only went 4-of-16 from the field, and trailed 11-10 after the opening period.

Later down 13-10 at 7:26 in the second, the Irish offense took off, scoring 13 consecutive points over a four-minute stretch to garner a 23-13 advantage. Ultimately, the Irish fired off the 18-3 scoring spree in which Walker contributed 10 of the points.

Notre Dame began the third scoring 11 points from five different players, boasting its largest lead of the game at 43-28. Yet, the Eagles caught fire, ending the period on a 9-0 run, which included a trey at the buzzer to cut the deficit to 43-37.

Boston College then began the fourth on a 5-0 run, prompting a quick Coach McGraw timeout at 8:27. The Irish then ran into serious foul trouble at 7:49 in the fourth as the Eagles reclaimed the lead 44-43. Vaughn and Gilbert were sent to the bench with four fouls, while Brunelle, Sniezek and Cosgrove all possessed three.

The fourth quarter run extended to 11-0, prompting another Notre Dame timeout, trailing 48-43, with 5:47 remaining. Yet, the Irish recaptured the momentum with 3:31 left on the clock, as Brunelle connected on a three, followed by a Gilbert jumper a second later due to an Eagles foul on the prior trey.

Walker then came up huge with her third three-pointer of the game at 2:07, reclaiming the lead for the Irish at 53-51.

With 33.5 seconds remaining, it was Boston College ball with Notre Dame up 53-52. Out of the timeout, BC’s Georgia Pineau delivered a jumper from the elbow to give the home squad the lead. Out of the Notre Dame timeout, Walker missed a driving layup but grabbed the rebound and delivered the go-ahead basket with 1.8 seconds on the clock before the Emma Guy buzzer beater.

LOUISVILLE – The Notre Dame women’s basketball team completes a five-game swing this weekend in which four of its contests were on the road. What’s awaiting the Fighting Irish (10-15, 5-8) is a rematch with No. 9 Louisville (22-3, 11-2) on Sunday, Feb. 16, inside the KFC Yum! Center. The game will air live on ACC Network at 3 p.m. ET.

HISTORY WITH LOUISVILLE

For the third straight game, the Irish will be competing against an ACC foe in which they’ve already played this season. Last time out against the Cardinals, it did not go Notre Dame’s way, dropping an 86-54 decision to the then No. 5 team in the country.

The Irish are 16-7 all-time against Louisville, with a 5-2 mark at their place. The last time these two met, Sam Brunelle and Katlyn Gilbert posted solid games, combining for 35 of the team’s 54 points.

Irish are 66-90 all-time against top-10 ranked foes.

ACC FRESHMEN OF THE YEAR CANDIDATES

Notre Dame can certainly make its point in having ACC Rookie of the Year candidates. Gilbert leads all ACC freshmen in scoring, averaging 13.8 ppg, while Brunelle sits right behind at 13.4 ppg. In fact, the Irish would have boasted the top three scoring spots for freshmen when you add in Peoples’ 12.6 ppg. The next highest is Clemson’s Amari Robinson at 11.4 ppg.

Among freshmen at power-five schools, Brunelle’s scoring average ranks eighth while Gilbert ranks sixth. In addition, Brunelle leads all ACC freshmen in the Points + Assists + Rebounds/Game category at 20.9.

Next, there only three freshmen pairs in all of Division-I to both average 13.0 ppg or higher – ND’s Brunelle and Gilbert, Fresno State’s Haley & Hanna Cavinder, UTSA’s Mikayla Woods & Adryana Quezada.

All-in-all, Brianna Turner, who remains the program’s lone ACC Rookie of the Year, averaged 13.8 ppg when she won it back in 2015.

DESTINEE – 20 POINT GAMES

For the first time of her career, Walker has recorded three straight games with 20+ points. Walker has totaled 69 points in said span, averaging 23.0 ppg on 48.9 percent shooting. She is also an impressive 8-of-17 from three (.471) and 15-of-17 (.882) from the free-throw line.

All-in-all, Walker leads the Irish in 20+ scoring performances with eight, which also sets a new career best – previous was four set her sophomore year at UNC (2016-17). In addition, her eight games are tied for fourth in the ACC.

FULFILLING HER DESTINEE

As alluded above, what a stretch it’s been for Walker. In fact, only Virginia’s Jocelyn Willoughby (22.3 ppg) is having a better February than Walker (21.0 ppg) amongst ACC players.

First, the Orlando native tallied 24 points in just 26 minutes of play vs. Pitt (2/9), nearly missing the entire third quarter due to foul trouble. She converted 4-of-7 from three-point range and dished out a season best 4 assists.

Then, after sitting with two points at the half at Wake Forest (2/6), Walker willed the Irish to victory by scoring 12 points in the third and 10 points in the fourth, to finish with 24.

Next, Walker almost won the game for the Irish in Boston College (2/13), pouring in 21 points, including a go-ahead basket with 1.2 seconds on the clock.

BAER’S DEN

A new face has appeared at the end of the Notre Dame bench, sporting a No. 1 jersey. She is none other than Irish volleyball product Kristin Baer. The graduate student still boasted a year of eligibility after her final volleyball season and joined the women’s basketball squad before the Georgia Tech game. Baer played middle blocker and led the Irish with a career high 119 blocks last fall.

Baer got into the Pitt game on Feb. 9 with 1:35 remaining and scored her first career basket.

HEATING UP FROM THREE

Sam Brunelle struggled early on, going 13-of-68 (.191) from beyond the arc over the first 14 games. However, she’s flipped the script as of late. Brunelle has converted multiple treys nine times over the last 11 games. In fact, since Jan. 5, she has converted 25-of-70 (.357) from three. Also since Jan. 5, Brunelle is averaging 2.3 made three’s/game, which ranks 8th in the ACC in that timespan.

VAUGHN TOUGH ON THE ROAD

Mikki Vaughn has recorded four separate occasions in which she has reached double-digit points by halftime. What’s interesting to note is the fact that all four instances have been on the road.

– 13 at Pitt on Jan. 2
– 10 at Syracuse on Jan. 5
– 14 at Duke on Jan. 23
– 10 at Georgia Tech on Feb. 2
