IRISH KNOCK OFF #21 SOUTH FLORIDA, 67-51
NOTRE DAME EARNS SECOND RANKED WIN ON THE YEAR

CANCUN, Mexico – The Notre Dame women’s basketball squad (5-4) ended the Cancun Challenge on a high note, knocking off No. 21 South Florida (5-4), 67-51. As a result, the Fighting Irish pick up their second ranked win on the season.

Anaya Peoples led the Irish in both scoring and rebounding, tallying a near double-double with 18 points and nine boards. She was followed by a 17-point performance from Destinee Walker. Furthermore, Katlyn Gilbert tied her career high of eight rebounds to go along with her 11 points.

Next, Sam Brunelle rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points, while Marta Sniezek notched six points, six boards and five assists.

How It Happened

In the first, the Irish utilized an 11-0 scoring run to go up 13-5. The scoring stretch was kicked off by back-to-back treys from Gilbert and Cosgrove. By the end of the first, all five Irish starters had tallied points, as Notre Dame led 13-9.

The Bulls cut it to one possession in the first minute of the second, but Peoples, Walker and Gilbert combined for a 6-0 run to extend the lead to 19-11. After a Brunelle three-pointer at 3:22, Notre Dame led 24-16, but South Florida deployed back-to-back three-pointers, ultimately recording an 8-0 run to tie the game at 24-all. With one second left in the half, Walker was sent to the free-throw line, where she gave the Irish a 25-24 halftime lead.

Notre Dame spread the wealth in the third quarter, receiving scoring contributions from six different players. Peoples recorded a stretch in which she scored six straight for the Irish, ultimately tallying nine in the quarter. The Irish ended the period with treys from both Walker and Peoples, garnering a 49-37 advantage heading into the fourth. The Irish had their best shooting quarter in the third, converting 9-of-14 from the field.

Walker, Gilbert and Peoples combined for the team’s first 12 points of the fourth, building their largest lead of the game, up 61-42 with 5:30 remaining. The Bulls tried staging a rally, firing off a 9-1 run to cut it to 62-51. Yet, Walker iced the game from the free-throw line, while Peoples tacked on another bucket to bring it to the 67-51 final.

Notes

  • Notre Dame leads the overall series, 12-2, against USF and have won nine straight against the Bulls.
  • The Irish earn their second ranked victory on the season.
  • The Irish move to 14-2 in Thanksgiving week tournaments/showcases spanning over the last decade (since 2009-10 season)
  • Gilbert kept her career high double-digit streak rolling with 11 points versus South Florida, making it nine games in a row.

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Big Ten/ACC Challenge arrives to Purcell Pavilion on Wednesday, Dec. 4, when the Notre Dame women’s basketball team (5-4) hosts Minnesota (5-1). Tip is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET, airing live on the ACC Network. Fans can also catch Bob Nagle and Karen Keyes on the call via Pulse FM.

The Irish will be looking for the program’s first win against Minnesota, trailing the overall series, 2-0. The last time the two sides met: a 79-71 loss at Notre Dame on March 22, 2009.

B1G/ACC CHALLENGE

With a 105-71 win over No. 14 Iowa last season, the Irish moved to 6-0 in the B1G/ACC Challenge.

Past results include:
2017: at Michigan – won 83-63
2016: at Iowa – won 73-58
2015: Ohio State – won 75-72
2014: Maryland – won 92-72
2013: Penn State – won 77-67

Last year’s Challenge was among the most competitive in the event’s history, with the ACC edging the Big Ten, 8-6. The title was the ninth in league history for the ACC, which owns a 9-0-3 advantage in the Challenge.

AGAINST THE BIG TEN

For the past decade, the Irish have been absolutely dominant against the Big Ten conference. Since the 2009-10 season, the Irish have gone 23-1 against Big Ten opposition, with the one blip being Michigan State on Nov. 14 of this season.

PEOPLES – ACC ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

When the Cancun Challenge wrapped, freshman Anaya Peoples had garnered two major accolades: the Cancun All-Tournament Team and ACC Rookie of the Week.

Peoples averaged 17.3 points and 8.7 rebounds over three games in Cancun. Peoples led the Irish in both scoring and rebounding against No. 21 USF with 18 points and nine boards, helping Notre Dame earn its second ranked victory on the season. Peoples also tallied a career-high tying 19 points against FGCU and pulled down nine boards. Against South Dakota State, the Danville, Illinois native logged 15 points and eight boards. Thus, Peoples came just shy in the rebounding department in all three games of potential double-doubles (9/8/9 rebounds).

Furthermore, Peoples boasted the best shooting percentage on the team this past week, converting 20-of-32 from the floor, a.k.a. 62.5 percent of her shots.

CHALLENGING SCHEDULE

With the release of the AP Week 5 Top-25 poll, the Irish have either faced or will face 13 teams who are currently ranked or receiving votes: No. 2 Louisville, No. 4 UConn, No. 8 Florida State, No. 13 NC State, No. 16 DePaul, No. 17 Tennessee, No. 19 Michigan State, No. 21 Miami, No. 24 Michigan.

Receiving votes – Syracuse, FGCU, Minnesota, North Carolina.

YOU ARE MY DESTINEE

When looking at ‘wins-only’ stats versus ‘losses-only’ stats, one starter’s stat-line in particular sticks out. The lesson – when Destinee Walker goes, the Irish go.

In games the Irish have won, Walker leads the team in scoring with 17.0 ppg, knocking down 42.9 percent from the field. The Orlando native is also more active on the glass, averaging 5.6 rpg.

In losses only, Walker averages 9.5 ppg on 28.9 percent shooting to go along with her 2.3 rpg.

IF ONLY THEY KEPT THE STAT

If charges taken was an official NCAA kept stat, Marta Sniezek could very well be atop the list in the nation. Just in Cancun alone, Sniezek took one against FGCU, four against South Dakota State, then took four again the very next day versus No. 21 South Florida for a weekly total of nine.

Earlier in the season, Sniezek took two charges vs. Tennessee and one vs. Michigan State for a season total of 12.

TURNOVER TURMOIL

One has to give props to the Irish defense where it is due. In five of the last seven games, Notre Dame has forced at least 20 turnovers:

Tennessee – 28
Michigan State – 20
Toledo – 21
Michigan – 24
South Dakota State – 22

Notre Dame ranks third in the ACC in turnovers forced and 78th in the nation, averaging 19.8 on the year. Furthermore, the Irish boast a +3.0 turnover margin, which ranks third in the ACC. The Irish also rank fourth in the league in steals per game with a 9.2 average.

Speaking of steals, both Katlyn Gilbert and Anaya Peoples rank third in the ACC in steals/game with a 2.0 average each. Destinee Walker ranks 11th in the league at 1.8 while Marta Sniezek ranks 13th at 1.7.

With all of our terrible limitations this season, we need opponents to help out --- i.e. do stupid things ---> turnovers, fouling, bad free throw shooting, etc. We have had some of those opponents and managed to win. But Minnesota is coached by one of the WNBA's greatest point guards, Lindsay Whalen. That sort of team will not do that. Whalen was one of my favorite pros to watch. Incredible coolness team-orientation and game control.

Hopefully we won't see her again this season.

]NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame women’s basketball squad (5-5) rallied from 18 down to claim a lead midway through the fourth quarter, but Minnesota (6-1) immediately retaliated with a late 17-2 run to claim a 75-67 B1G/ACC Challenge victory.

“Really disappointed in the defense, and for as bad as we were offensively in the first half we came all the way back, but then couldn’t find (Gadiva Hubbard) in our zone. We need to be smarter. Just a lack of awareness where their shooters were,” Karen & Kevin Keyes Family Head Coach Muffet McGraw said.

Sam Brunelle led the Irish with 19 points on 9-of-18 shooting. Katlyn Gilbert registered all her points in the second half to total 15 to go with her seven boards. Anaya Peoples recorded career highs in both rebounds (14) and assists (6) to go with her nine points. Marta Sniezek tallied a season-high 10 points, while Destinee Walker rounded out the double-digit scorers with 12 points.

How It Happened

Turnovers plagued the Irish in the first quarter. Notre Dame committed nine to be exact, allowing the Gophers to capture an 8-0 run to take a 15-9 advantage. Sniezek led the Irish with five points.

Notre Dame suffered a seven minute drought that went from the end of the first into the first four minutes of the second. Combine that with the fact that Minnesota’s first half offense was powered from seven three-pointers, and the Gophers built their largest lead of the game, up 18 points (33-15) with 2:19 till halftime.

However, Notre Dame fired off a quick 6-0 run to end the half, cutting the deficit to 33-21. Brunelle scored six points in the second to lead the Irish at the half with eight.

After missing its first shot of the third quarter, Notre Dame went on to convert nine of its next 13 field goals, cutting the deficit to single digits at 51-43. Walker and Gilbert combined for 15 of the team’s 23 points in the quarter, as the Irish trailed 53-44 heading into the fourth.

Brunelle kicked off the fourth with an and-one, and on the next few possessions Gilbert extended it to a 7-1 Irish run and a three-point ballgame down 54-51. Next, a Brunelle layup at 5:33 gave the Irish their first lead of the game since the opening two minutes, up 57-56.

However, a Hubbard three-pointer at 4:25 kicked off a 17-2 Minnesota run in which the Gophers connected on three from deep. Minnesota then rode the momentum to a 75-67 victory.

Notes

  • Tonight marked the third meeting between the Irish and the Gophers, as Minnesota moves to 3-0 in the overall series.
  • The Irish are now 6-1 in the B1G/ACC Challenge since joining the league for the 2013-14 season.
  • The Irish are 23-2 against Big Ten opposition since the 2009-10 season. .
  • Gilbert kept her career high double-digit streak rolling with 15 points vs. Minnesota, making it 10 games in a row. Gilbert scored all 15 points in the second half.
  • Sniezek took a charge tonight and has now taken 13 charges on the season.
  • Sniezek scored a season high 10 points.
  • Peoples recorded career highs in both rebounds (14) and assists (6).
  • Notre Dame tallied a season best 44 points in the paint.

How Destinee Walker can help save Notre Dame's season

9:25 AM CT Graham Hays

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- At least for an afternoon, it felt as nothing had changed for Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish went on the road before Thanksgiving and beat a ranked opponent. A player rated among the best in her class out of high school was instrumental.

Except very little is the same this season. Start with Notre Dame entering that game at Michigan an underdog, unranked for the first time in 12 years. Then consider that while Destinee Walker scored 27 points. The graduate transfer is not an All-American, but she is simply happy to be on the court again after missing nearly two and a half seasons with injuries.

No, this isn't the same old winter in South Bend.

As Notre Dame renews its rivalry with UConn on Sunday (ESPN, 4 p.m. ET), it is closer to .500 than to its customary place in the top five. This is unfamiliar territory for a program that reached the Final Four in seven of the past nine seasons. Much of the most recent success was built around a recruiting class that arrived in 2015, built around the skill and bravado of Arike Ogunbowale and Marina Mabrey. Their presence explained the success. The void they left explains the current uncertainty and even threatens to define this season.

Yet there is no time like the present for Walker, the last member of the 2015 recruiting class to put on a Notre Dame uniform. The Fighting Irish hope that is the sentiment that defines their season.

"I feel like I'm getting back to my old self," Walker said a few days after the Michigan game last month. "And I feel like this team has so much to offer."

Walker's arrival in South Bend was delayed more than four years; the high schooler never took the recruiting visit to South Bend that she originally planned. Muffet McGraw had hoped to land the guard from Orlando ranked 17th in her class by HoopGurlz. The Notre Dame coach recalled a positive recruiting visit to see Walker and her mom, Sharon. But after taking four of her five allowed campus visits, with Notre Dame scheduled to be the fifth, Walker committed to North Carolina.

Ogunbowale, meanwhile, picked the Irish.

While the Tar Heels struggled that first season, Walker did not. She started 31 games and averaged 13.9 points to earn all-freshman honors in the ACC -- as did Ogunbowale. But that success started to unravel midway through Walker's sophomore season as a right knee injury required surgery and forced her to miss the final 11 games. Physical therapy dragged on throughout the subsequent season, pushing potential return dates back until she missed the entire campaign.

Finally back to full health as preseason arrived a year ago, her fourth in Chapel Hill, Walker couldn't wait to get back on the court. She was so eager, in fact, that she believes it cost her. Going all out early in practice, she sustained a labral tear in her right hip. She tried to play through the injury with treatment, but after struggling through limited minutes in a handful of games, she listened to her body -- at the expense of another season on the court.

From Jan. 30, 2017 to Nov. 5, 2019, a span of more than a thousand days during which Notre Dame won and lost titles, she played a total of 39 minutes for North Carolina.

Life didn't stop during that time, of course. Walker graduated with a degree in journalism, grateful in some ways for the extra time to focus on those demands.

"It helped me with my career," Walker said. "But you miss basketball a lot. I was doing everything with the team, but I couldn't play and I couldn't practice."

With her degree in hand and feeling her time in Chapel Hill had reached a natural conclusion with the rest of her class either graduating or transferring amid the tumultuous spring that led to Sylvia Hatchell's resignation, Walker sought a fresh start as one of the increasing number of graduate transfers nationwide. It was still at least a small surprise when she got a phone call from McGraw after last season. The Notre Dame coach saw Walker's name in the transfer portal and wanted to know if she had any interest in finally making that recruiting visit to South Bend.

McGraw hoped to turn to the class of 2015 one more time (or twice, as turned out, after Marta Sniezek -- No. 38 in the 2015 rankings -- arrived as a graduate transfer from Stanford).

McGraw fought a rear guard action against attrition for some time. Once Ali Patberg, ranked No. 13 in that 2015 class, redshirted as a true freshman at Notre Dame, the program seemed to have a bridge to carry it through the season after Ogunbowale and Mabrey (eventually joined by Jessica Shepard, No. 3 in 2015). With Patberg and Jackie Young still in a projected backcourt for the 2019-20 season, the program would make a smooth transition between eras.

But then Patberg transferred to Indiana prior to the 2017-18 season. And Young, following in the footsteps of Jewell Loyd, entered the WNBA draft with a season of eligibility remaining. All five of Notre Dame's starters for 2018-19 were selected among the first 19 picks in April's WNBA draft.

"We don't really over-recruit," McGraw said of the tendency of some schools to recruit large rosters that both anticipate and demand attrition. "We recruit for somebody that's going to play three years at least, if not four. So that was our future. Ali Patberg was definitely the future point guard that we wanted. It was disappointing when she left. It's kind of set us back. Marina had to end up playing the point, which actually worked out pretty well for us. But we've just been kind of off in our numbers since then. Certainly we expected Jackie to be here.

"So now to look at what we thought we would have, and then to see how it worked out, it's very different."

Factor in injuries to Abby Prohaska and Mikayla Vaughn, returnees who represented at least a semblance of continuity, and Notre Dame is very much a work in progress. Before a recent practice, McGraw said all the right things about enjoying the teaching. She loves puzzles, after all, and this one is a doozy. After that same practice, which she halted repeatedly to make increasingly exasperated corrections, she sat down again wearing an exhausted expression. It has been a long time since basketball at Notre Dame was this much of an introductory seminar.

"What this team's identity is, we still haven't figured that out yet," McGraw said. "Where at least the past couple of years, I mean, you almost were trying to keep them from getting bored at practice. Try to keep it interesting, try to go short and intense, make things fun. Now I'm working, teaching. ... We're still learning so many things."

Most games, Walker plays almost as many minutes, in fact, as she played in total during those thousand lost days while injured. Initially hesitant in her play, lest her body fail her again, it is a sign of how far she has come that she is second on the team in free throw attempts.

"I think she's getting better every game," McGraw said before Thanksgiving. "She's putting it on the floor and driving it a little bit more. And defensively, she's really, really good."

It's not a coincidence that Notre Dame's best days, including the win against Michigan and another against ranked USF, came when she played well. And it's not a surprise that after all that time out of action, there will be both good days and bad days for all involved.

This might not be a cameo for Walker. Because she played so sparingly for the Tar Heels a season ago while dealing with the hip injury, she will apply for a sixth year of eligibility and hopes to return to Notre Dame next season. That's when one of the nation's top-rated recruiting classes will join current freshmen Sam Brunelle and Anaya Peoples as the core of a new era.

Squeezed between past and future, this will be a different kind of season. Perhaps it need not be a lost season. It isn't for Walker, who finally found her way to Notre Dame.

ND v #4 Con

ND v #4 Con

GAME 11: (RV) NOTRE DAME VS. #4 UCONN
When: Saturday, Dec. 8 | 4 p.m. ET
Where: Gampel Pavilion (Storrs, Conn.)
Watch: ESPN

Listen: PULSE FM 96.9 / 92.1 / 103.1

STORRS, Conn. – The challenging non-conference schedule for the Notre Dame women’s basketball rolls on this Sunday, when the new-look Irish get acquainted with an old-rival. The Fighting Irish (5-5) will make the trip to Gampel Pavilion in Storrs for a showdown with No. 4 UConn (7-0) at 4 p.m. ET on ESPN. The matchup will also serve as the women’s Jimmy V Classic Game.

THE RIVALRY

The past two seasons, UConn has gotten the upper-hand during the regular season, while the Irish got the last laugh at the Final Four, knocking off the Huskies in back-to-back National Semifinals.

Notre Dame is 5-3 all-time against UConn in the NCAA Tournament, with a 5-1 mark in National Semifinals. The five NCAA Tournament wins against UConn not only stand as the most of any program, but also doubles the next highest team.

Overall, over the last nine years, Notre Dame has defeated UConn nine times — all other Division I teams have combined for eight wins.

GILBERT-PEOPLES CONNECTION

The on-the-court chemistry between guards Katlyn Gilbert and Anaya Peoples has been immediate and there’s no wonder way. Gilbert, from the Indianapolis area, and Peoples from Danville, Illinois, have played together every summer since they were seven and six years old, respectively. The duo first played on FBC together and later finished playing with Midwest Elite in Chicago.

Fast forward to now. Over the last four games, the duo are leading the Irish in both scoring and rebounding. Peoples is averaging a double-double in that span with 15.3 points and 10.0 rebounds. Meanwhile, Gilbert is averaging 14.3 points and 6.8 boards. Both Gilbert and Peoples are shooting over 50 percent from the field in that span as well, knocking down 55.6 percent and 53.3 percent, respectively.

ABILITY TO FINISH OFF THE RALLY

The Irish have shown on multiple occasions their ability to execute and fight back after falling into a deep hole. What has hurt the Irish this non-conference season is the ability to finish off the rally.

Dec. 4 vs. Minnesota – Down 18 in the 2nd quarter – took a 57-56 lead in the 4th quarter before losing 75-67.

Nov. 29 vs. South Dakota State – Down 16 in the 3rd quarter – took a 48-45 lead at the start of the 4th quarter before losing 65-59.

Nov. 14 vs. Michigan State – Down 13 in the 1Q – had chance to tie at the buzzer before losing 72-69.

*Exception came Nov. 23 at Michigan – Down 11 in the 2nd quarter – outscored the Wolverines 19-11 in final period to win 76-72.

SLOW STARTS – LATE RALLIES CONTINUED

Adding on to the above note – the Irish have nearly scored 100 more points on the year in the second half compared to their first half output. Notre Dame has scored 287 points in the first half for an average of 28.7, compared to 372 points in the second for an average of 37.2.

CHALLENGING SCHEDULE

With the release of the AP Week 5 Top-25 poll, the Irish have either faced or will face 13 teams who are currently ranked or receiving votes:

#2 Louisville, #4 UConn, #8 Florida State, #13 NC State, #16 DePaul, #17 Tennessee, #19 Michigan State, #21 Miami, #24 Michigan.

RV – Syracuse, FGCU, Minnesota, North Carolina – 4

YOU ARE MY DESTINEE

When looking at ‘wins-only’ stats versus ‘losses-only’ stats, one starter’s stat-line is a little different. The lesson – when Destinee Walker goes, the Irish go.

In games the Irish have won, Walker leads the team in scoring with 17.0 ppg, knocking down 42.9 percent from the field. The Orlando native is also more active on the glass, averaging 5.6 rpg.

In losses only, Walker’s average dips to 10.0 ppg on 33.3 percent shooting to go along with her 2.2 rpg.

Coach McGraw suspects the program record is around 20 set by Kristina Nelson in the 2017-18 season. Sniezek is officially up to 13 on the year.

BRUNELLE SETS FRESHMAN RECORD

Never in the history of the Fighting Irish women’s basketball program has a player started her ND career with five straight games in double figures … until now. Freshman Sam Brunelle did just that and then more, recording a stretch of seven in a row before her streak came to an end vs. South Dakota State on Nov. 29.

TURNOVER TURMOIL

One has to give props to the Irish defense where it is due. In five of the last eight games, Notre Dame has forced at least 20 turnovers:

Tennessee – 28
Michigan State – 20
Toledo – 21
Michigan – 24
South Dakota State – 22

Notre Dame ranks second in the ACC in turnovers forced, averaging 18.7 on the year. Furthermore, the Irish boast a +2.1 turnover margin, which ranks fourth in the league. The Irish also rank fifth in the ACC in steals per game with an 8.5 average.

Speaking of steals, there are four Irish who all rank within the top-15 in the ACC: Peoples fourth with 1.9, Gilbert 10th with 1.8 and both Sniezek/Walker 14th with 1.6.

WELCOME BACK GILBERT

Last season, Gilbert played in six full games, before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury against Iowa on Nov. 29, 2018. A year later, Gilbert has returned in full force, leading the team in scoring with her 14.9 ppg, which ranks 15th in the ACC. In fact, Gilbert is riding a career best stretch of 10 consecutive double-digit scoring performances – the only player on the team to be in double-figures in every game.

Gilbert ranks 13th in the nation in made field goals with 61 and ranks 13th in the ACC in field goal percentage, converting 48.4 percent. Gilbert also has one 20+ scoring effort under her belt, recording a career high of 24 points against Loyola.

BRUNELLE 4TH QUARTER SURGES

Trailing by seven points in the fourth quarter to Michigan State, Sam Brunelle tried spearheading the rally by scoring 11 of her 19 points in the final period alone. Brunelle connected on two treys in the quarter, including one with 10 seconds left to cut the deficit to one. Brunelle also got a final three-point attempt up at the buzzer to tie the game, but the shot came up just short.

Then at No. 21 Michigan on Nov. 23, Brunelle recorded a stretch in the fourth quarter in which she scored nine of the team’s next 11 points, ultimately finishing with 12 points for the game.

Against Minnesota on Dec. 4, Brunelle tallied seven of her 19 points in the fourth quarter.

SNIEZEK’S OFFENSE PICKING UP

Irish fans know Sniezek can distribute well and play sound defense and take a charge, but it’s her offense that has begun to churn as of late. Over the first five games, Sniezek went 1-for-11 from the field, averaging just 2.0 ppg. Over the last five games, Sniezek is driving to the basket more and is 12-of-18 from the floor (.667), averaging 7.2 ppg in that span.

GAME 11: (RV) NOTRE DAME VS. #4 UCONN
When: SUNDAY, Dec. 8 | 4 p.m.

Con opens the half with 7-0 run to add to the 11-0 run that closed out the 1st half.

Peoples ends the run.

Peoples outfought Makurat for a reb, went coast to coast, pulled up UNDER Ododa, and then spun out of Ododa's wingspan for the layup. Ododa already has 3 blocks in the game.

Brunelle still on the bench. Cosgrove getting some work.

3:37 of the 3rd. ND's first TREY!

Gilbert cuts the lead to 26.
