Notre Dame women rally past No. 21 Michigan 76-72
2:53 PM CT
Associated Press

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Destinee Walker scored 27 points, freshman Sam Brunelle took over down the stretch and Notre Dame knocked off No. 21 Michigan 76-72 on Saturday.

The Wolverines led 63-60 when Amy Dilk made a layup with 7:32 to play. Brunelle and Walker made layups before a Brunelle 3 put the Irish up for good. Brunelle made the next two baskets for Notre Dame and Walker's layup pushed the lead to 73-67.

Defense made the difference for Notre Dame (4-2). With a layup at the buzzer, Michigan (4-1) was 2 of 13 from the floor in the fourth quarter with seven turnovers. In addition to missing nine straight shots, the Wolverines were only 7 of 12 from the foul line.

Anaya Peoples added 13 points for the Irish with Brunelle and Katlyn scoring 12 apiece. Walker matched her career high with five 3-pointers. Brunelle has scored in double figures every game, the longest career-opening streak in Irish history.

Naz Hillmon had 17 points and 16 rebounds for Michigan with Kayla Robbins grabbing 12 rebounds to go with 11 points. The Wolverines had a 53-24 rebounding advantage but had 24 turnovers and only shot 34%.

Yeh. This actually was a 29 (!!!!!!!!!!) rebound deficit. Winning with that is probably impossible, so this must be a clear Muffet Miracle.

Sniezek took three shots --- another miracle.

We almost fouled four of our seven players out --- THAT would have been fun.

This is just too DAMM hard. Muffet nor anyone else deserves to have to go up against these sorts of odds every time to squeak wins. Bless you, ladies, for incredible toughness.

We all thought 2018 was the roughest a coach should have to handle, even winning the NC with that many injuries to starters or key bench players. If they can make even a slightly deep run into the tournament this year it will be an absolute miracle. 2018 had tons of experience though limited depth. Thank God for Jess transferring in that year and getting her eligibility.

I am VERY nervous about our chances of even GETTING a tournament bid. I'd say that the odds were against it --- note that most of our remaining schedule will be the ACC.

We badly need Vaughn back and fully functional. Apparently Abby's type of problem is just too risky --- I'd have to have a gun to my head to approve someone playing with that sort of lung issue --- even then I wouldn't.

Our strength will be a very dangerous duo of Gilbert and Walker, a more frequently shooting Sniezek, and a developing to stardom Brunelle. Peoples will get there.

But we'll still get our brains rebounded out.

#1 Duke Men Lose To Steven F. Austin In OT!

#1 Duke Men Lose To Steven F. Austin In OT!

Tuesday night's loss to the Lumberjacks is the first time Duke has lost a nonconference home game since 2000, and the first time in 13,473 days (1983!) since it has lost to an unranked mid-major team.

And the Dukies didn't lose their Starting Five to Pro BB's First Round and then two more top returning to injuries. The SFA coach also noticed SFA had limited practice this week due to the flu.

Her medical team probably has but they won't be discussing it nor will ND in detail. Abby's a student with privacy protected by Federal law. Any detail would have to come from Abby or family.

From family experience and a lot of reading, the clots could be caused by multiple sources. They most likely came from another part of the body traveled through her circulatory system and were trapped in a narrower vessel in her lungs. This is a treatable but very serious condition. If you want more detail I suggest you google the illness

It's not comparable to our normal topics of a pulled hamstring, quad, shoulder separation where the trainers can put you in the pool and work on other muscle groups and pulmonary conditioning through rehab. We're not going to get updates like you would for those injuries, i.e., she off crutches and into a walking boot.

Here they have to treat the embolisms with anticoagulants to reduce in size, eliminate, and prevent return. She'll probably be on maintenance drugs for an unspecified time. Typical treatment is a week in the hospital followed by week or months, which goes along with McGraw's two months. Keep in mind typical patients are Division I athletes running their butts up and down the court, bouncing into people, taking a charge, leaping for rebs, diving onto a hard court for loose balls ... and doing all this with excellent pulmonary capacity which will diminish through lack of intense training while under treatment.

IF they put Abby in one of those dog collar recovery cones to reduce movement as part of rehab (this is an example folks NOT her treatment) she'd work right through it. That's who she is. If she's on the court and there a loose ball she not going to think she's instinctively going to dive for it. If there's a dribbler driving down the lane she going to position for the block and take the charge. In football there are jokes about putting a banged up QB in a skirt for protection. If you put Abs in a skirt she's still going to take the charge; still dive for the loose ball. That's her M.O.

Personally I suspect she's going to have a tougher time working through this than an hamstring or quad. Bright spot is her problem was diagnosed and treatment started at least a month ago.

We all wish her best and hope to see her back WHEN she can perform at a healthy level. I wouldn't circle a game in early January on your calendar.

Blood clots can also be caused by birth control. College females on birth control is certainly common.

Blood clots are some serious crap. They move around and if they move to an artery or specific area it can mean death. Had a friend who was having a bad headache and felt dizzy. Went to the Immediate Care and was in the room waiting for the doctor to return. He tells his girlfriend he can't see and several seconds later dies.

Have another friend who is a health nut. Rarely eats anything fat, salads, baked or grilled chicken and fish was his diet. Runs everyday. Basically does everything to be as healthy as can be. He ends up with a blood clot in his head. They put him on thinners, but it took about fours months before it was gone. He drove himself crazy trying to figure out how he would get a clot when he is so extreme about his health.

Young women not on estrogen have a 0.00003 (0.003%) risk rate of developing a blood clot in a given year. Young women on estrogen have a 0.00012 (0.012%) risk rate in a given year. The low numbers here should be expected as Mother Nature WANTS young women to be high estrogen producers themselves. But we're all a bit different.

The most likely element in these stories (like Abby's, GOD bless her --- she was my favorite player even last year) is that there is a genetic component to this. BGIF is exactly correct in characterizing her Will to Win and do whatever it takes. I am REALLY missing seeing her take the court and watching ND suddenly just shut off an opponent at the defensive end (even with our famous defense-optional All-American on the floor.)

If the medicos can find a truly safe way to get these clots stopped, everyone should shout for joy and all of us liking NDWBB rise in applause when our tough little warrior takes the floor (even if she's not quite game-perfect yet.)

TURNOVERS PLAGUE IRISH IN 69-60 LOSS TO FLORIDA GULF COAST
PEOPLES LED WITH A SEASON HIGH TYING 19 POINTS

CANCUN, Mexico – The (RV) Notre Dame women’s basketball squad (4-3) tried to overcome a turnover heavy game (25 total), but the late rally against Florida Gulf Coast (6-1) came up just short, falling 69-60, in game one of the Cancun Challenge.

Anaya Peoples led the Irish in scoring, tying her season high of 19 points, while nearly achieving her first double-double with a season best nine rebounds. Fellow freshman Sam Brunelle recorded her second double-double in three games with 11 points and 12 boards. Lastly, Katlyn Gilbert rounded out the double-digit scorers with 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting.

How It Happened

Brunelle scored the first seven points, pushing the Irish to an early 7-2 advantage. However, after a Sniezek layup at 5:43, which put the Irish up 9-2, Notre Dame didn’t score for the remainder of the quarter. As a result, Florida Gulf Coast produced a 12-0 run, which later extended into a 16-0 run, spilling into the second quarter.

Peoples then ended what was a seven-minute drought at the 8:22 mark. Cosgrove and Brunelle then followed, resulting in a 7-0 Irish run to pull within two at 18-16 at 6:54. Yet, the Eagles recaptured the momentum with back-to-back treys on consecutive possessions to go up 26-19, and eventually 30-21 at the half.

Brunelle nearly had a double-double at the midway point with 11 points and nine boards. Turnovers continued to haunt Notre Dame, committing nine in the second quarter for a total of 14 at the half.

The Irish utilized three-point plays to slowly chip away in the third. Gilbert and Sniezek each hit treys, while Peoples scored on two and-ones in the quarter, all resulting to the Irish pulling within four at 41-37 at the 5:01 mark. Yet, Florida Gulf Coast connected on two three’s of their own in the final 1:37 of the quarter to go up 55-45 heading into the fourth.

Facing their largest deficit of the game, 63-47, with 6:42 remaining, the Irish continued to fight back, firing off a 10-0 run to cut the deficit to six with 2:35 left. Yet, it was FGCU’s Davlon Wingate who converted back-to-back layups to stymie the rally and finish off the 69-60 victory.

Peoples was a major reason on the late rally, scoring nine points in the third and six in the fourth.

Notes

  • Today marked the first ever meeting between Notre Dame and Florida Gulf Coast.
  • Today also marked just the third ever Thanksgiving Day game in program history.
  • The Irish suffer their first Thanksgiving week tournament/showcase loss spanning over the last decade (since 2009-10 season), moving their record to 13-1 in that span.
  • Notre Dame and FGCU are two of just four programs in Division I to win 25 or more games in each season since 2010-11, with the other two being UConn and Baylor. Notre Dame’s current streak sits at 10.
  • Brunelle added on to her program record this afternoon with her seventh straight double-digit scoring effort, supplying 11 points. Brunelle is the first Irish player in program history to start her career with seven double-digit scoring games, with the previous record being four.
  • Brunelle also recorded her second double-double in a three-game span, reeling in 12 rebounds.
  • Gilbert kept her career high double-digit streak rolling with 14 points versus FGCU, making it seven games in a row.
  • Peoples tied her season high of 19 points and achieved a new season best with nine boards.

Up Next

It’ll be a quick turnaround, for the Irish return to action in less than 24 hours, challenging South Dakota State on Friday at 11 a.m. ET.

IRISH RALLY FALLS SHORT IN 65-59 LOSS TO SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
GILBERT AND PEOPLES COMBINE FOR 32 POINTS

CANCUN, Mexico – Less than 24 hours from its previous game, the (RV) Notre Dame women’s basketball squad (4-4) returned to action on Friday, this time taking the floor against South Dakota State (5-2). Trailing by as much as 16 in the third, the Irish rallied all the way back to take the lead at the start of the fourth. When the dust ultimately settled however, the Jackrabbits emerged with the 65-59 victory.

Katlyn Gilbert earned her eighth consecutive game in double figures, leading the Irish in scoring for the fourth time this season with 17 points, connecting on 7-for-11 from the field. Anaya Peoples came close to registering a double-double again, supplying 15 points and eight rebounds. Destinee Walker rounded out the double-digit scorers with 12 points.

How It Happened

South Dakota State connected on six of its first eight shots, jumping out to a 15-2 advantage. Katlyn Gilbert ended the team’s 0-for-6 start from the field at the 3:12 mark, as Peoples and Sniezek later built on to the scoring spree to make it a 7-0 run. Walker later hit a pull-up jumper with seven seconds left (as all five starters recorded points in the first) to pull within seven at 18-11 after one.

Next, the Jackrabbits deployed another scoring run to begin a quarter, starting the second on a 6-0 spree. Walker and Peoples then combined for a 6-2 scoring spurt to cut it to 26-17 at the 4:51 mark. However, that marked Notre Dame’s last field goal of the quarter (3-of-13 shooting for the period), as South Dakota State went on to claim a 34-21 halftime lead.

The Jackrabbits built their largest lead of the game at the 7:07 mark in the third, up 40-24. However, the Irish found another gear for the remainder of the quarter, firing off a 21-5 scoring run to tie the game at 45-all heading into the fourth. Gilbert powered the scoring surge with 11 points in the period, followed by six points from Walker. As a whole, the team shot 8-of-12 in the period.

Peoples then kicked off the fourth with an and-one, pushing the Irish ahead 48-45 with 9:21 left. However, the tide turned back in favor of South Dakota State as the Jackrabbits emerged with a 61-54 lead with 1:46 remaining.

With 53 seconds left, Gilbert connected on a jump shot. Then Sniezek took her fourth charge of the game, resulting in a South Dakota State turnover. Five seconds later, Brunelle converted a corner three and it’s a one-possession ballgame, down 61-59.

Out of the timeout, South Dakota State converted on their possession, now up 63-59. Brunelle tried again from three twice more, but couldn’t get them to fall, as the Jackrabbits took it 65-59.

Notes

  • Notre Dame still leads the overall series, 2-1, against South Dakota State.
  • The Irish drop to 13-2 in Thanksgiving week tournaments/showcases spanning over the last decade (since 2009-10 season)
  • With a seven-point outing, Brunelle’s record setting double-digit scoring streak comes to an end at seven games. Brunelle was the first Irish player in program history to start her career with seven double-digit scoring games, with the previous record being four.
  • Gilbert kept her career high double-digit streak rolling with 17 points versus South Dakota State, making it eight games in a row. She also lead the team in scoring for the fourth time this season.
  • Walker collected her sixth game in double figures with 12 points.
  • Peoples earned her sixth as well with 15 points. The freshman also tied her season high of four steals.
  • Sniezek took four successful charges in today’s game.
  • The Irish forced 22 South Dakota State turnovers, marking the fifth time this season Notre Dame has caused 20+.

Up Next

The Irish wrap their Cancun Challenge week with No. 21 South Florida on Saturday, Nov. 30, at 11 a.m. ET. The game will once again be streamed on FloHoops and be found on Pulse FM.
