I agree. This will be a learning season but the ladies have a good teacher.

If they manage to win the ACC and get a top 3 seed in the tourney then I think Muffet will deserve coach of the year. She basically has 3 freshman starters and 2 newcomers to the team. Even if Gilbert is the first of the bench once Vaughn is healthy, she's going to play a lot of minutes. The group of Peoples, Walker, and Gilbert could be special and of Brunelle can be effective from deep, I think they'll definitely compete for the ACC championship

No. 16 Notre Dame women beat Loyola (Md) 84-60
7:46 PM CT

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Katlyn Gilbert scored a career-high 24 points, Destinee Walker and Anaya Peoples each added 19 points and No. 16 Notre Dame beat Loyola (Md.) 84-60 on Friday night.

Gilbert scored eight points in the first quarter as Notre Dame built a 19-7 lead. Walker had a team-high 13 points in the first half, helping the Irish take an 18-point lead after Loyola shoot just 9 of 36 from the field.

Freshman Sam Brunelle had 12 points and nine rebounds for Notre Dame (2-0), which honored Natalie Achonwa as the sixth women's basketball inductee to the ring of honor. Achonwa, a two-time Olympian, led the Irish to four consecutive Final Fours, including three NCAA championship games.

Notre Dame was 1 of 12 from 3-point range, but made 17 of 24 free throws compared to 6 of 12 for Loyola.

Ashley Hunter paced Loyola (0-1) with 16 points and Alexis Gray added 10.

I hate saying this, but as great as Muffet is (and she is the best) there is no conceivable way to win the ACC with this group. The guard play should be superb, but guards cannot do much without the ball, and it is bigs who get the majority of the possessions.

I will be delighted if our girls can win more than half their games. A twenty win season would be a near miracle. Unless Brunelle and Cosgrove suddenly become people playing like Jess Shepard and Jackie Young, we will not be able to sustain against athletic size.

Size is just one element. Experience. Depth.

Tennessee is not an AP ranked team. Counting the Other Receiving Votes, UT would be #33.

It's going to be a long season.

This is the sort of thing that I was expecting --- though I hoped that we'd have Vaughn and that Brunelle would be a better rebounder. It's why I said earlier that if Muffet wins 20 games with this group it is a major coach-of-the-year miracle.

And to a previous question: Yes, this is exactly what we should expect when we play a team with any sort of size.

This is a team, Gentlemen, to sit back and watch and hopefully admire how much they battle against the odds every game. The girls this season will have a chance to show their deepest character. If they do, all of us should be standing in applause for them, win or lose. (Hopefully none of our jerks from the football threads will darken this one with their typical commentary.)

#15 IRISH FALL SHORT IN RALLY VERSUS TENNESSEE, 74-63

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The No. 15/14 Notre Dame women’s basketball team (2-1) forced 28 turnovers against Tennessee on Monday night, but the Lady Vols (3-0) took advantage of a 55-28 rebounding advantage to earn the 74-63 win. Destinee Walker led the Fighting Irish with 18 points, connecting on three treys. Sam Brunelle (16 points) and Katlyn Gilbert (12 points) also tallied double-digit points.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After falling behind 17-7, Notre Dame went on a 7-0 run with 3:01 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Gilbert, to narrow its deficit to 17-14. Tennessee answered back and added to its lead, leaving the Fighting Irish down 21-14 entering the second quarter.

Sniezek took two early charges in the second, as Peoples joined in the action minutes later, taking a charge of her own. Then a pair of Walker three-pointers brought the Irish fans to their feet, pulling within four points of the Lady Vols at 32-28.

However, Gilbert’s jumper at 3:06 was the final Irish basket of the half, as Tennessee took a 36-28 lead. Walker scored eight points in the second quarter to bring her total in the half to 10, while Gilbert sat at eight points at the midway point.

Tennessee then connected on four treys in the first three minutes of the third to extend its lead to 50-32, its largest of the game. Yet, the Irish kept fighting, chipping away at the lead in the fourth.

Trailing by 17, the Irish notched a 6-0 run and forced 10 Tennessee turnovers over a six-minute span, ultimately pulling within 10 (66-56) with 3:16 left. All 16 Notre Dame points in the fourth came via Brunelle (7) and Peoples (9).

NOTES

  • Notre Dame trails the overall series versus Tennessee, 22-8.
  • The Irish faced the tallest Tennessee team in program history, as the Lady Vols boast an average height of 6-2.
  • The Irish win streak in November comes to end at 49, which dates back nine years.
  • Tonight marked the first loss at home outside of UConn over the last 114 contest. Irish were 110-3 heading into tonight in said span.
  • Walker recorded her third straight game in double figures with 18 points.
  • Gilbert also tallied her third consecutive game in double figures with 12 points.
  • Brunelle was the third Irish in double figures with 16 points.
  • The Irish forced 28 turnovers tonight. The last time the Irish defense forced 25 or more was also against Tennessee back on 1/18/18.

UP NEXT

The Irish continue their four-game home stand with a top-25 showdown on Thursday, Nov. 14. No. 15 Notre Dame will challenge No. 16 Michigan State in a rematch from the second round of last year’s NCAA Tournament. The game will tip at 8 p.m. ET inside Purcell Pavilion, airing live on the ACC Network.

I watched the last 12 minutes of the game and it was a shame they couldn’t score because they were working so hard on the defensive end of the court. It was paying off too, they just couldn’t score. It’s also a miracle they didn’t get blown out by 30 considering Tenn had 60 rebounds, 15 blocks, and only shot 30% from the floor. Hopefully they don’t get discouraged and continue to battle like this each game.

Indeed true; we don't have the talent to beat good teams. Muffet is a Hall of fame coach and she won't be able to win 20 games with this roster, nobody could.

Lack of size is alarming. Brunelle is not a post player yet we have no choice but to put her there.

Lose All 5 Starters + Over-Dependence on Two True Freshman + Lack of Height = Difficult Season Which Could Pay Off in the Future (With a Recruiting Class that Includes Two Tall Skilled Lady Basketball Players and a Three Point Shooter or Two)

Caitlin Clark just committed to Iowa. When it rains, it pours...

Nah, that makes sense. We are littered with young guards now and already have two committed. I figured this to be the more likely outcome

Indeed true; we don't have the talent to beat good teams. Muffet is a Hall of fame coach and she won't be able to win 20 games with this roster, nobody could.

Lack of size is alarming. Brunelle is not a post player yet we have no choice but to put her there.

It's not lack of talent, it's lack of experience and depth. We have talent but no team can win against really good teams with 3 true freshmen and 2 graduates transfers. It takes time to develop chemistry and the young players to learn the speed of college ball. Lack of height is an issue at the moment with Vaughn out, too.

Oregon starts national signing week with No. 1 recruiting class

https://www.espn.com/womens-college-basketball/story/_/id/28066136/oregon-starts-national-signing-week-no-1-recruiting-class

Dan Olson ESPN

Oregon started the year No. 1 in the AP Top 25. The Ducks have the No. 1 player in the country in Sabrina Ionescu. And they also start the early period of national signing week with the No. 1 recruiting class for 2020.

Oregon has five prospects who are ranked inside the top 33, led by No. 10 Sydney Parrish. The Ducks also have No. 15 Kylee Watson, No. 19 Maddie Scherr, No. 24 Angela Dugalic and No. 33 Te-Hina Paopao.

UConn has the No. 2 class. The Huskies landed top prospect Paige Bueckers, a skilled combo guard who delivers consistent offensive production off the dribble. Bueckers joins a class that features No. 21 prospect Mir McLean, No. 26 prospect Aaliyah Edwards, international prospect Nika Muhl and unranked Piath Gabriel.

Muffet McGraw's four top-50 prospects put Notre Dame's recruiting class at No. 3, while No. 5 Kamilla Cardoso's commitment to Syracuse has the Orange in at No. 4. Stanford, thanks to No. 3 prospect Cameron Brink, comes in at No. 5.

California, Baylor, Iowa State, Ole Miss and Kentucky round out the top 10 in the class rankings entering signing week.
