SI'S WOMEN'S PRESEASON TOP 10
By Laken Litman

1. Notre Dame: Four starters return from the national title team, as well as 6' 3" Brianna Turner (a 2017 All-America) and 6' 3" Mikayla Vaughn, who are back after ACL injuries. If that weren’t enough, the Irish also add two highly ranked freshman point guards (Katlyn Gilbert and Jordan Nixon).

2. Connecticut: The Huskies lose three of six key players, including forward Azura Stevens, who passed up a fourth year of eligibility to play in the WNBA. But they do have two All-Americas—6' 1" forward Napheesa Collier (16.1 ppg) and 6' 3" forward Katie Lou Samuelson (17.4 ppg)—and freshman Olivia Nelson-Ododa, a 6’ 4” dunking machine.

3. Baylor: The frontcourt duo of 6' 7" senior Kalani Brown and 6' 4" junior Lauren Cox, who combined to average 35.4 points in 2017–18, is steaming toward a third-straight Big 12 title.

4. Oregon: Point guard Sabrina Ionescu will be a top contender for national player of the year after setting the women’s career triple-double record last season, with 10. The Ducks also have 6' 4" Ruthy Hebard, 6' 2" Erin Boley and 6' 5" Mallory McGwire roaming the blocks.

5. Louisville: Jeff Walz has four starters back from the Final Four run, including the ACC player of the year, 5' 10" senior guard Asia Durr (18.7 ppg).

6. Mississippi State: A double-double machine, 6' 7" senior center Teaira McCowan (18.2 ppg, 13.9 rpg) will have to bear a heavier scoring load after the Bulldogs lost 92.4% of their three-point shooting to graduation. Anriel Howard, a 5' 11" grad transfer from Texas A&M, and a pair of highly rated recruits will have to jell quickly.

7. Stanford: The Cardinal were blown out in the Sweet 16 by Louisville, but they have 12 players back, including Australian 6' 4" senior forward Alanna Smith and 5' 8" sophomore shooting guard Kiana Williams, who hit 72.2% (13 of 18) of her three-point shots in the Pac-12 tournament.

8. South Carolina: Replacing A’ja Wilson, the 2018 WNBA Rookie of the Year, won’t be easy. Dawn Staley will need a big senior season from 6' 3" forward Alexis Jennings (the top returning scorer, with 11.4 ppg) as well as major contributions from 6' 2" junior Mikiah Herbert Harrigan and 6-foot sophomore LeLe Grissett.

9. Tennessee: The Lady Vols lost their two leading scorers but have 6' 2" swingwoman Rennia Davis (12.0 ppg, 7.6 rpg) and 6-foot guard Evina Westbrook (8.4 ppg, 4.3 apg), who were part of the nation’s top recruiting class in 2017.

10. Texas: The Longhorns’ title hopes suffered a blow when 6' 3" junior forward Joyner Holmes had right-ankle surgery in mid-October. That means two seniors, 6' 4" forward Jatarie White (10.8 ppg, 5.9 rpg), and 5' 9" Lashann Higgs (12.8 ppg), will have more responsibility. Having the nation’s No. 2 recruit, 6' 5" center Charli Collier, eases the pain.

The Associated Press 2018-19 preseason All-America women's basketball team, with school, height, year and votes from a 31-member national media panel (key 2017-18 statistics in parentheses):

Asia Durr, Louisville, 5-10, senior, 29 votes (18.7 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 2.3 apg, 41.5 3pt fg pct, 84.8 ft pct, 1.0 steals)

Sabrina Ionescu, Oregon, 5-11, junior, 29 votes (19.7 ppg, 6.7 rpg, 7.8 apg, 43.8 3pt fg pct, 80.5 ft pct, 1.7 steals, 35.6 minutes)

Katie Lou Samuelson, UConn, 6-3, senior, 28 votes (17.4 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 3.8 apg, 53.0 fg pct, 47.5 3pt fg pct, 83.5 ft pct, 1.2 steals)

Kalani Brown, Baylor, 6-7, senior, 18 votes (20.0 ppg, 10.5 rpg, 64.2 fg pct, 1.5 blocks)

Others receiving votes: Teaira McCowan, Mississippi State, 12; Megan Gustafson, Iowa, 10; Napheesa Collier, UConn, 4; Chennedy Carter, Texas A&M, 1

...

Ogunbowale may be the most well-known member of the team after hitting historic game-winning shots in both the semifinals and finals of the NCAA tournament last season to lead Notre Dame to the title. She averaged 20.8 points and 5.4 rebounds for the Irish as a junior last year.

"I think the biggest jump in Arike's game this summer has been in her leadership," Notre Dame coach Muffet McGraw said. "She's done a tremendous job with the freshmen. She's encouraging; she's really leading. She's always led by example, now she's doing it vocally."

Ogunbowale helped the Irish earn the No. 1 ranking in the AP's preseason poll.

Mabrey did not dress. Hip flexor that's not deemed serious. I believe she's expected to be ready when the games that count begin.

Paterson has a minor knee injury and is expected back soon.

Cole is out for the season due to knee surgery.

Shepard (foot) and Gilbert (shoulder) both played for more than 20 minutes tonight. The shoulder may explain Gilbert's 1-6 shooting. Shepard was 11-13.

This was an Exhibition Game against a Div II school. Stark difference in talent levels.

That said two stats jump out Vaughn had 15 rebounds in 17 minutes. And Arike had a career high 11 assists.

The past two seasons I've been critical of her going to the hoop in traffic or going to the hoop in a 2 on 1 or 3 on 1 fast break when there was a teammate or teammates wide open. I didn't see tonight's game but if she can dish like that against quality opponents this team can't be beat. A plethora of scorers and Arike dishing to others will mean defenses can't key on her ... making her more effective and a more complete player.

Good signs!

Irish Soar Past Flyers, 107-65, in Lone Exhibition Young and Shepard combine for 48 points

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The University of Notre Dame women's basketball team performed its final tune-up ahead of the 2018-19 season on Tuesday evening, hosting Lewis University in an exhibition bout. The Fighting Irish offense soared to a 107-65 win against the Flyers, powered by 48 combined points from Jackie Young (25 pts) and Jessica Shepard (23 pts).
Furthermore, Arike Ogunbowale (14 pts, 11 ast) and Mikayla Vaughn (11 pts, 15 reb) each tallied doubles-doubles, while the return of Brianna Turner resulted in an 18-point, eight-rebound performance.

"I think we're a really capable offensive team," Karen & Kevin Keyes Notre Dame head coach Muffet McGraw said. "We've got a lot of different weapons and a lot of people that can score."

How It Happened
The Irish jumped out to a 10-0 lead, then a 17-4 advantage, before ultimately shooting 11-of-18 from the field (61.1 percent) in the first quarter. The Irish ended the period with a 26-15 lead thanks to the trio of Young, Ogunbowale and Shepard who combined for 24 of the points.

The second quarter was powered by a trio once more, this time in Turner (nine points), Shepard (eight points) and Young (eight points). Turner and Shepard played a major role in the Irish tallying 22 points in the paint for the quarter and a 25-12 rebounding advantage at the half. All-in-all, the Irish took a 51-31 lead into the locker room at the half.

The Irish defense had its best quarter in the third, limiting Lewis to 10 points on 2-of-15 shooting. On the opposite end of the quarter, Notre Dame tallied 18 points in the points and 10 fast break points. The Irish extended their lead to 80-41 heading into the final quarter, at which point Shepard and Young had 23 points each.

Notre Dame's freshmen saw plenty of playing time in the fourth and, at one point, all four were all out there at the same time. Both Jordan Nixon and Mikayla Vaughn poured in nine points in the period.

Player of the Game
Both Shepard and Young were proficient from the field on Tuesday. Shepard converted 11-of-13 for her 23 points, while Young knocked down 10-of-12 for a game high of 25 points.

Ogunbowale dished out what, during the regular season, would have been a career-best 11 assists and was three rebounds shy of a triple-double.

Stat of the Game
Notre Dame recorded 26 fast-break points tonight. The Irish did not have 20-plus fast break points in any game last season.

Up Next
The Irish officially kick off the 2018-19 season on Friday, Nov. 9, when they host Harvard at 4 p.m. ET inside Purcell Pavilion.
Notre Dame will then host Penn for its 2018 national championship banner drop on Monday, Nov. 12, at 7 p.m. ET.

For tickets, fan can either visit und.com/buytickets, visit the Murnane Family Ticket Center inside the main entrance of Purcell Pavilion from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m., or call the ticket office at (574) 631-7356.

Foggy crystal ball prediction: Jess Shepard will be an unstoppable monster in the paint this season. We tend to think of the great outside arc of players (rightly so) and the destroyer of opponent shots (Brianna --- and rightly so), but I believe that almost no team will have the slimmest of answers for Jess. I see a hungry senior with more power and aggression in her than we've seen.

Part of this may be becasue Jess is also a slimmer and probably stronger and in better condition than last sesason.

Honestly, this is the best team Notre Dame has had, on paper, in a long time. I'm really interested to see how the Turner/Shepard combo works, the jump Young makes from year 2 to year 3, Vaughn after showing a very promising start to her freshman campaign before getting injured, and how deep Muffet goes on the bench as she should have a deep bench to work with.

Other than UCONN and Louisville, I don't see much competition for this year's squad.

If Jess is "looking" hungry that is great news. The only worry that I had looking forward to this team was whether key players like Jess or Arike would get too happy with their accomplishments and lose their edge (you know that Marina and Jackie won't; they are all-day warriors.)

I'm interested to how they are on defense because to me that really shows the "want to" level. Everyone likes to score so they should be fine playing hard on offense, but if they get a little too full of themselves or even just rest on their laurels I think it will show quickly on the defensive side.

That said, I don't think it will even matter for most of the regular season. There is too much talent and any worries I had about Turner and Shepherd playing together were pretty quickly quelled after just the first game.

Jackie and Marina vision themselves as proud "stoppers" and Brianna enjoys swatting shots more than scoring, so defense is in their DNA. Jess will want it too. Arike on the other hand has always been defense-optional when it comes to help-side defense. If she ever even gets to the point of understanding what she's supposed to do off the ball, we'll be suffocating.

I assume the young'uns will learn this attitude from the Old Ladies and Muffet's job will be relatively easier this season (and next as far as understanding and wanting-to is concerned.)

Ogunbowale, No. 1 Irish open with 103-58 rout of Harvard

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Arike Ogunbowale scored 30 points in three quarters as top-ranked Notre Dame opened its national title defense with a 103-58 victory over Harvard on Friday.

Ogunbowale, who hit a pair of buzzer-beaters in the Women's Final Four last spring in victories over Connecticut and Mississippi State that gave Notre Dame its second national championship under coach Muffet McGraw, made 10 of 21 field goals and all nine free throws in 25 minutes.

Jessica Shepard had 28 points on 12-of-16 shooting to go with eight rebounds before joining Ogunbowale on the bench in the fourth quarter after playing 27 minutes. Brianna Turner, who sat out all of last season with an ACL injury, had 11 points and 11 rebounds in 21 minutes. Mikayla Vaughn, another player returning from ACL surgery, finished with 12 points.

Sydney Skinner, whose 3-pointer in the first minute gave Harvard its only lead, led the Crimson (0-1) with 15 points, all from long distance. Nani Redford finished with 12 points.

Ogunbowale had 18 points and Shepard scored 14 as the Irish dominated the first half, leading 23-11 after the first quarter and 50-29 at halftime.

Notre Dame, which shot 63 percent in the first half, ended it with Turner scoring on a pass from Young with 4 seconds left and Shepard stealing the inbound pass and hitting a jumper to beat the buzzer. Skinner had 12 points in the half for Harvard, which was limited to 28.2 percent shooting, outrebounded 29-15 and committed 12 personals to Notre Dame's one.

The Irish put the game out of reach with a 36-16 third quarter to lead 86-45 going into the final 10 minutes. Their largest lead was 46 points.

BIG PICTURE

Notre Dame: The Irish started the season with three players nursing injuries. Starting point guard Marina Mabrey has a quad injury, while reserve frontliner Danielle Patterson sat out with a swollen knee. Both are day-to-day. Walk-on Kaitlin Cole is out for the season after knee surgery. Starting guard Jackie Young, who played much of last year with a mask to protect a broken nose, was in a mask again after getting dinged during the team's 107-65 exhibition victory over Lewis last week. She went without it in the second half.

Harvard: The Crimson finished 18-11 last season and received a berth in the WNIT for their 14th postseason appearance, the most of any Ivy League team. Harvard was picked to finish third in an Ivy League preseason poll behind first choice Princeton and Penn. Four of last year's five top scorers return, led by co-captains Skinner and Madeline Raster, who played prep basketball two miles south of the Purcell Pavilion at Saint Joseph High School. It was not a good homecoming for Raster, who was kicked in the head by Turner going for a loose ball in the third quarter. She finished with five points in 13 minutes.

UP NEXT

Harvard: Visits Purdue Sunday before returning home to play La Salle.

Notre Dame: Penn visits Monday, when the Irish will hoist their 2018 NCAA championship banner.
