Ogunbowale may be the most well-known member of the team after hitting historic game-winning shots in both the semifinals and finals of the NCAA tournament last season to lead Notre Dame to the title. She averaged 20.8 points and 5.4 rebounds for the Irish as a junior last year.
"I think the biggest jump in Arike's game this summer has been in her leadership," Notre Dame coach Muffet McGraw said. "She's done a tremendous job with the freshmen. She's encouraging; she's really leading. She's always led by example, now she's doing it vocally."
Ogunbowale helped the Irish earn the No. 1 ranking in the AP's preseason poll.

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The University of Notre Dame women's basketball team performed its final tune-up ahead of the 2018-19 season on Tuesday evening, hosting Lewis University in an exhibition bout. The Fighting Irish offense soared to a 107-65 win against the Flyers, powered by 48 combined points from Jackie Young (25 pts) and Jessica Shepard (23 pts).
Furthermore, Arike Ogunbowale (14 pts, 11 ast) and Mikayla Vaughn (11 pts, 15 reb) each tallied doubles-doubles, while the return of Brianna Turner resulted in an 18-point, eight-rebound performance.
"I think we're a really capable offensive team," Karen & Kevin Keyes Notre Dame head coach Muffet McGraw said. "We've got a lot of different weapons and a lot of people that can score."
How It Happened
The Irish jumped out to a 10-0 lead, then a 17-4 advantage, before ultimately shooting 11-of-18 from the field (61.1 percent) in the first quarter. The Irish ended the period with a 26-15 lead thanks to the trio of Young, Ogunbowale and Shepard who combined for 24 of the points.
The second quarter was powered by a trio once more, this time in Turner (nine points), Shepard (eight points) and Young (eight points). Turner and Shepard played a major role in the Irish tallying 22 points in the paint for the quarter and a 25-12 rebounding advantage at the half. All-in-all, the Irish took a 51-31 lead into the locker room at the half.
The Irish defense had its best quarter in the third, limiting Lewis to 10 points on 2-of-15 shooting. On the opposite end of the quarter, Notre Dame tallied 18 points in the points and 10 fast break points. The Irish extended their lead to 80-41 heading into the final quarter, at which point Shepard and Young had 23 points each.
Notre Dame's freshmen saw plenty of playing time in the fourth and, at one point, all four were all out there at the same time. Both Jordan Nixon and Mikayla Vaughn poured in nine points in the period.
Player of the Game
Both Shepard and Young were proficient from the field on Tuesday. Shepard converted 11-of-13 for her 23 points, while Young knocked down 10-of-12 for a game high of 25 points.
Ogunbowale dished out what, during the regular season, would have been a career-best 11 assists and was three rebounds shy of a triple-double.
Stat of the Game
Notre Dame recorded 26 fast-break points tonight. The Irish did not have 20-plus fast break points in any game last season.

Foggy crystal ball prediction: Jess Shepard will be an unstoppable monster in the paint this season. We tend to think of the great outside arc of players (rightly so) and the destroyer of opponent shots (Brianna --- and rightly so), but I believe that almost no team will have the slimmest of answers for Jess. I see a hungry senior with more power and aggression in her than we've seen.
If Jess is "looking" hungry that is great news. The only worry that I had looking forward to this team was whether key players like Jess or Arike would get too happy with their accomplishments and lose their edge (you know that Marina and Jackie won't; they are all-day warriors.)
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Arike Ogunbowale scored 30 points in three quarters as top-ranked Notre Dame opened its national title defense with a 103-58 victory over Harvard on Friday.
Ogunbowale, who hit a pair of buzzer-beaters in the Women's Final Four last spring in victories over Connecticut and Mississippi State that gave Notre Dame its second national championship under coach Muffet McGraw, made 10 of 21 field goals and all nine free throws in 25 minutes.
Jessica Shepard had 28 points on 12-of-16 shooting to go with eight rebounds before joining Ogunbowale on the bench in the fourth quarter after playing 27 minutes. Brianna Turner, who sat out all of last season with an ACL injury, had 11 points and 11 rebounds in 21 minutes. Mikayla Vaughn, another player returning from ACL surgery, finished with 12 points.
Sydney Skinner, whose 3-pointer in the first minute gave Harvard its only lead, led the Crimson (0-1) with 15 points, all from long distance. Nani Redford finished with 12 points.
Ogunbowale had 18 points and Shepard scored 14 as the Irish dominated the first half, leading 23-11 after the first quarter and 50-29 at halftime.
Notre Dame, which shot 63 percent in the first half, ended it with Turner scoring on a pass from Young with 4 seconds left and Shepard stealing the inbound pass and hitting a jumper to beat the buzzer. Skinner had 12 points in the half for Harvard, which was limited to 28.2 percent shooting, outrebounded 29-15 and committed 12 personals to Notre Dame's one.
The Irish put the game out of reach with a 36-16 third quarter to lead 86-45 going into the final 10 minutes. Their largest lead was 46 points.
BIG PICTURE
Notre Dame: The Irish started the season with three players nursing injuries. Starting point guard Marina Mabrey has a quad injury, while reserve frontliner Danielle Patterson sat out with a swollen knee. Both are day-to-day. Walk-on Kaitlin Cole is out for the season after knee surgery. Starting guard Jackie Young, who played much of last year with a mask to protect a broken nose, was in a mask again after getting dinged during the team's 107-65 exhibition victory over Lewis last week. She went without it in the second half.
Harvard: The Crimson finished 18-11 last season and received a berth in the WNIT for their 14th postseason appearance, the most of any Ivy League team. Harvard was picked to finish third in an Ivy League preseason poll behind first choice Princeton and Penn. Four of last year's five top scorers return, led by co-captains Skinner and Madeline Raster, who played prep basketball two miles south of the Purcell Pavilion at Saint Joseph High School. It was not a good homecoming for Raster, who was kicked in the head by Turner going for a loose ball in the third quarter. She finished with five points in 13 minutes.
UP NEXT
Harvard: Visits Purdue Sunday before returning home to play La Salle.
Notre Dame: Penn visits Monday, when the Irish will hoist their 2018 NCAA championship banner.
