Butler women upset No. 11 Marquette 61-57
9:17 PM CT
Associated Press

MILWAUKEE -- Tori Schickel scored six of her 19 points in the fourth quarter as Butler rallied past No. 11 Marquette for a 61-57 win on Friday night.

Schickel's layup with 36 seconds to go gave the Bulldogs (20-6, 10-5 Big East Conference) a 59-57 lead and Whitney Jennings made 2 of 4 free throws to cap the scoring. The Golden Eagles (22-5, 13-2) lost for the second time in their last three games.

Butler trailed by eight early in the fourth quarter before scoring 11 straight points for a 54-51 lead with 4:06 to go. Marquette scored four straight points to retake the lead, but Michelle Weaver's 3-pointer put the Golden Eagles ahead 57-55 and they never trailed again.

Jennings scored 13 points, Weaver added 12 and Kristen Spolyar had 11 for Butler.

Allazia Blockton scored 14 points, Lauren Van Kleunen had 10 points and 12 rebounds, and Danielle King scored 10 for Marquette.

UCLA stuns No. 2 Oregon after erasing 22-point deficit

7:39 AM CT
Associated Press

EUGENE, Ore. -- Kennedy Burke had a career-high 29 points and UCLA came back from a 22-point deficit to knock off No. 2 Oregon 74-69 on Friday night.

Burke was 12-of-17 from the field and had seven rebounds for the Bruins (17-10, 10-5 Pac-12), who won for the eighth time in the past nine games. Japreece Dean added 14 points and Michaela Onyenwere had 12.

UCLA outscored the Ducks 36-14 over a large portion of the second half to lead 68-60. Oregon pulled to within 70-69 on Sabrina Ionescu's 3-pointer with 34 seconds left, but the Bruins scored the final four points at the foul line.

Erin Boley led the Ducks (24-3, 13-2) with 20 points, Ionescu had 18 and Maite Cazorla 13. Oregon was playing without junior forward Ruthy Hebard, who injured her right knee in Monday night's 67-62 loss at No. 12 Oregon State.

It was the first back-to-back losses for the Ducks since they dropped three in a row to end the 2016-17 season, a span of 71 games.

Oregon made 10 of its first 15 shots to lead 23-12 after one quarter. The lead grew to 22 points behind 13 from Boley before the Bruins scored the final seven points of the first half to trail 42-27.

BIG PICTURE

UCLA gets its first victory of the season over a top-10 team with an impressive comeback from a sluggish first half. The Bruins also broke a five-game losing streak against the Ducks.

Oregon struggled to cope without the inside presence of star forward Hebard and her 69.0 percent shooting, second in the nation, against a projected NCAA tournament team. The Ducks need one win to clinch at least a share of their second straight Pac-12 regular-season title.

UP NEXT

UCLA: visits Oregon State on Sunday.

Oregon: hosts USC on Sunday.

"Notre Dame does now elevate to a 1" Creme after OR loss

Charlie Creme
So in the last five days top-16 teams Oregon (twice), NC State, Iowa, Miami, Maryland, Marquette, South Carolina all lost. Iowa St and Gonzaga also lost just outside that window. And Stanford and Oregon St barely survive scares. This may take some time to sort out.

UConn has been on the 1-line. Notre Dame does now elevate to a 1 as well.

Is it realistically possible that Notre Dame and Louisville get #1 Seeds even though they will have to face each other in the ACC Tournament? Presume both teams win out and the only loss is when they play each other. Presume Miss St wins out, do they get a #1 seed over Oregon?

Charlie Creme
‏@CharlieCreme 21s21 seconds ago
It is possible, but not as likely if Miss St wins out. Same goes for if Oregon wins out with a healthy Hebard. Both Miss St and Oregon would also be collecting good wins along the way by winning out.

http://www.espn.com/womens-college-basketball/story/_/id/26073622/women-bracketology-know-the-air

8:27 AM CT Charlie Creme ESPN.com

Since the start of ESPN's women's bracketology 15 years ago, the phrase "subject to change" has never been more appropriate. No. 1 seeds have never been so up in the air this late in the season. Some weekends, teams are shifting on and off the bubble by the hour. The fight to be in the top 16 seeds and host first- and second-round games is even more contentious than the battle for a No. 1 seed.

So, with three weeks until Selection Monday, and one week left in the regular season in most of the Power 5 conferences, what questions have been answered and what's still to come?

What we know
Six teams have a chance to be a No. 1 seed: That might seem like a small number, but by this time during most years, the four No. 1 seeds are virtual locks or three of the four are well-established. Never has there been six truly worthy candidates with just three weeks left on the clock. Through Sunday's games, Baylor, Louisville, UConn and Notre Dame are the choice in this week's bracketology -- and there shouldn't be much debate, due to recent losses by Oregon and Mississippi State. If the Ducks and Bulldogs don't lose again, they would have a strong claim to a top seed.

UConn to Albany and Oregon to Portland: Whether they end up as No. 1 or No. 2 seeds, count on the Huskies playing in the Albany Regional and the Ducks staying in their home state. With the way the committee assigns regional placement based on a team's position on the S-curve, there is no scenario in which both UConn and Oregon finishing in the top six puts them in any other region.

All hail these five mid-majors: Gonzaga, Drake, South Dakota State, South Dakota and Central Michigan are making the field. They already have put together NCAA tournament-worthy seasons.

That also means these are the teams for which those on the bubble need to root for during conference tournament play. For instance, if South Dakota or South Dakota State doesn't win the Summit League tournament, then three teams from that conference will be going to the NCAA tournament and another at-large spot is gone, because both the Coyotes and Jackrabbits have a spot should they not get the automatic bid.

At one point, it appeared the Mid-American Conference would get multiple bids, but that's not as certain today if Central Michigan wins the MAC tournament. Should the Chippewas pull that off, another spot opens up; the same holds true if Drake can claim the Missouri Valley Conference tourney.

Bubble teams such as Auburn, LSU, Indiana, West Virginia, Kansas State and Butler might need as many open slots as possible.

What we don't know
Will Louisville or Notre Dame go to Chicago? The Fighting Irish heading to the Windy City is not a done deal, even if Notre Dame is a No. 1 seed. The NCAA selection committee values a team's ability to bus rather than fly whenever possible. Both the Cardinals and Irish can bus to Wintrust Arena. So, if Louisville wins the ACC tournament in a close final over Notre Dame, but the Irish are still a No. 1 seed, the Cardinals would still be ahead of the Irish on the S-curve and, thus, be placed in the bracket first. That means Louisville would get put in Chicago, pushing Notre Dame somewhere else, likely Portland. So, keep a close eye on the Cardinals and Irish in the ACC tournament. Whichever team wins the title -- or goes furthest in the competition, if neither wins the ACC tourney -- will likely be in the Chicago Regional.

How will the committee view injuries in its decision-making for the No. 1 seeds? Jackie Young was sidelined in one of Notre Dame's three losses. Ruthy Hebard missed most of the game when Oregon fell at Oregon State, and she sat out the Ducks' loss to UCLA. Unlike some other injured players (Chloe Bibby at Mississippi State or Grace Hunter -- among others -- at NC State, for example), Young and Hebard are back, and their teams are whole again and presumably will be when the NCAA tournament rolls around.

Evaluation of key players missing time is a subjective element to the process, so it's not clear if the committee will weigh those losses -- the ones that could be the difference between a No. 1 or No. 2 seed -- the same as others. Even if they are viewed differently, will that view be enough to offset the loss itself or at least minimize it in the eyes of some committee members? We might not know that answer until Selection Monday.

How will the top-16 race shake out? About 19 teams are in the mix, with nine likely being locks. That leaves 10 teams for seven spots. This also is a rarity to have so much potential fluidity this late in the season.

Miami did itself a huge favor by beating Florida State on Sunday, which also knocked the Seminoles out of serious contention. South Carolina's win over Tennessee also boosted the Gamecocks. Syracuse would vault itself into the top 16 (and help make the debate over which teams should be a No. 1 seed easier) with an upset of Notre Dame on Monday (ESPN, 6 p.m. ET). Like the Orange, Kentucky and Texas A&M look to be just barely on the outside looking in, but with worthy résumés; the loser of their Thursday matchup in Lexington probably will see the chance to host disappear.

Game 29 Preview: Syracuse
#5 Irish Battle #18 Syracuse on Monday on ESPN2

Game 29: #5/5 Notre Dame (25-3, 12-2) at #18/18 Syracuse (20-6, 9-4)
When: Monday, Feb. 25 | 6 pm ET
Where: Syracuse, N.Y. | Carrier Dome
Watch: ESPN2

Listen: Pulse FM 96.9/92.1/103.1 | Bob Nagle (PxP)
Live Scoring: Sidearm
Notes: Notre Dame | Syracuse

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - On Monday evening, in front of a national audience on ESPN2, the No. 5 Notre Dame women's basketball team will go for its eighth ranked win on the year when the Irish challenge No. 18 Syracuse. Tip off is set for 6 p.m. ET inside the Carrier Dome. The Irish lead the all-time series against the Orange 32-2, with a 14-1 record at Syracuse.

ALL-TIME SCORING LEADER
Arike Ogunbowale became Notre Dame's all-time scoring leader on Feb. 21 vs Duke. The senior surpassed Skylar Diggins-Smith's record of 2,357 career points. In addition, Ogunbowale is just 1-of-5 Irish greats to score over 2,000 points, joining Ruth Riley, Katryna Gaither, Beth (Morgan) Cunningham and of course Skylar Diggins-Smith. Ogunbowale now sits with 2,371 career points.

TEAM OF ALL-AMERICANS
Coach McGraw has often stated that she boasts a team of All-Americans and any starter can step up on a given day. The starting five represent over 90 percent of the team's scoring, as all five average over 13.0 ppg - no other team can claim that about their starters.

What's important to note when comparing the five to other All-American candidates is how well this team spreads the wealth. The team averages 20.3 assists/game which ranks 5th in the nation, as Mabrey, Ogunbowale and Young all average over 4.0 assists/game and rank within the top 8 in the ACC in assists.

Also keep in mind, Notre Dame's starters have accomplished great numbers against the nation's No. 1 rated strength of schedule, in the No. 1 RPI ranked conference in the ACC and with the No. 1 ranked overall team RPI.

RPI TOP-25 WINS
With wins over Gonzaga, Drake, Oregon State, Iowa, Marquette, Louisville, Florida State and now N.C. State - the Irish boast eight RPI top-25 victories - that number leads the nation and the next best team (Louisville) by two. Also doubles the amount by Baylor and UConn. The Irish also boast seven top-25 ranked wins and three against the top 10 - both lead the nation.

IRISH SHARPSHOOTERS
Two Irish players rank in the top 15 in the nation in shooting percentage, shooting over 60 percent each. In addition, four Irish players rank in the top 60, shooting over 50 percent each.

8. Turner - 61.7 percent
14. Shepard - 60.4 percent
33. Young - 54.8 percent
58. Mabrey - 51.5 percent

Turner and Shepard are the only post duo in the country both shooting over 60 percent. The two towers rank 1st and 2nd respectively, in the ACC in field goal percentage.

In addition, Young continues to be the most efficient guard in Notre Dame's arsenal. Her .548 shooting percentage ranks 4th nationally among just guards.

As a team, the Irish are shooting 51.6 percent, which ranks third in the country. Also on pace to finish 2nd all-time in Notre Dame history. The 1987-88 team holds the top spot at 53.2 percent.

BEST IRISH PLAYER IN ACC PLAY ONLY?
Only two players in all of the ACC came claim they rank in the top in six different statistical categories in league play only. The answer: Notre Dame's Jessica Shepard and Duke's Haley Gorecki.

Shepard ranks 9th in Scoring (16.3), 3rd in Rebounds (9.9), 2nd in FG% (.603), 9th in FT% (.807), 2nd in O-Reb (3.5) and 4th in D-Reb (6.3).

WHO'S HOT
Jessica Shepard has achieved 12 straight games in doubles figures, as the senior recorded a season best of 12 to start the year. Shepard has earned four double-doubles in the last five games -- in said five game span, Shepard has averaged 20.2 points and 12.0 points.

TURNER BLOCK PARTY
With 23 blocks over the last six games, Turner is averaging 3.8 blocks in the month of February. Only Alexes Bryant of Texas A&M CC and Channon Fluker of CSUN have a better total and average this month.

Turner has collected 40 blocks over the last 11 games, including her season high of five four times. It's a major reason why Turner was recently named a Naismith Defensive Player of the Year Semifinalist.
