very interesting game....

Things are "progressing" some as I hoped and some as i feared.

We won this game in the second period when we stopped their scoring essentially to zero. Our unsung player was integral to that and since she'll never get anyone else to sing for her, I'll happily do it.

While the big stars were doing their magic, but Syracuse hanging in there anyway, Muffet subbed in Abby and went with a zone which required a good chaser up top. Abby did that almost flawlessly (pretty marvelous how well) and the result was that Syracuse got only 8 points and we pushed out to an 18 point lead.

That was the pleasant hope --- Abby being trusted and coming through (Muffet did that again when Syracuse had a little rally in the second half and Muffet had her in there to help slow that down.)

The "feared" part was when the Syracuse coach decided that we were tired enough to put the full court press on. We really labored with that and it showed everywhere. When we got Jess up court to catch the ball, we broke it easily, but if she wasn't involved then it was dicey. Opponent coaches will notice that in the film ... press this team especially in the second half. Marina was so gassed that she could barely function and Muffet had to have Jackie take over (because you also can't trust Arike with any consistency on this job.) Jackie is no point guard. We can't ask her to be a press breaker. We MUST get Jess and the over-the-top passing game involved more.

Still Syracuse waited much too long and the score was a blowout. It wouldn't have been nearly that bad if they'd pushed us all game (and if Muffet wasn't so good mixing Abby and multiple defenses in.)

I guess I look at it as if ND wins out and beats UL again, I would expect Chicago.

As if this morning.

Win tonight. Run the tournament and ND is ACC Regular Season Champ AND ACC Tournament Champ. ND controls their destiny. #1 in Chicago.

Good to know. Thanks. But still don't think Oregon should get to play in Portland being a 2 seed.

#4 Irish Defeat #17 Syracuse, 98-68
Notre Dame earns nation leading eighth ranked win

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The No. 4 Notre Dame women's basketball team earned its nation leading eighth victory against a ranked opponent when the Fighting Irish (26-3, 13-2) charged past No. 17 Syracuse (20-7, 9-5) by the score of 98-68. Notre Dame recorded 29 assists on 38 made field goals, as the assist total marked its second highest of the season.

Brianna Turner poured in a season high 22 points while Jessica Shepard tallied her fifth double-double over the last six games with 17 points and 13 boards. Arike Ogunbowale recorded a team high 24 points. Marina Mabrey flirted with a double-double with 17 points and eight assists, while Young flirted with a triple-double with 10 points, eight rebounds and a career high 12 assists.

"I thought we did a really good job, particularly in the first half, of looking inside," Karen & Kevin Keyes Notre Dame head coach Muffet McGraw said. "We were trying to find Brianna Turner and we had an opportunity to go to her quite often. I thought that was quite effective."

How It Happened
The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair which saw eight total lead changes. Mabrey paced the Irish offense in the opening quarter with seven points on 3-of-4 shooting, followed by six points each from Ogunbowale and Shepard. The Irish earned some separation in the final two minutes where they produced a 7-1 run to go up 24-19.

The second quarter was all Notre Dame, outscoring Syracuse 22-8. The Irish produced a 16-0 run in the period, keeping the Orange off the scoreboard for a 5:30 stretch.

Syracuse, who started the game 3-for-4 from three, were blanked from beyond the arc (0-for-3) in the second. In addition, Notre Dame, who was trailing the rebounding battle 11-3 at the first quarter media, rallied to go up 23-21 at the half. All-in-all, the Irish led Syracuse, 46-27, at the break.

Notre Dame's offense continued to click for the first half of the third quarter, where they outscored Syracuse 18-7 over the first five minutes, building a 64-34 advantage. Yet, the Orange mustered a 10-0 run (second one Notre Dame has given up all year) before Shepard ended it with an and-one at the 1:04 mark, ending the period up 69-47.

Next, Notre Dame saved its biggest offensive quarter for last, pouring in 29 points in the fourth to bring the game to its 98-68 final.

"It was a good day for us shooting," Ogunbowale said. "It's a credit to our posts. They had a good inside-out game and were able to find our guards."

Notes
  • With the win, Notre Dame moves to 33-2 all-time in the series against Syracuse, including a 15-1 mark at Syracuse.
  • The Irish move one win away from at least a co-share of the ACC regular season title.
  • The Irish move to 89-5 in league play since joining the ACC for the 2013-14 season.
  • Notre Dame earned its eighth ranked win on the year, which continues to lead all Division I teams.
  • Shepard earned her 12th double-double on the year and her fifth over the last six games. Shepard tallied 17 points and 13 rebounds.
  • Young dished out a career high 12 assists, picking up a double-double with 10 points, her seventh of the season. Young flirted with a triple-double with eight boards.
  • Ogunbowale achieved her 19th game with 20-plus points, which continues to lead all players in the ACC. The senior tallied 24 points, which included a 4-for-7 effort from three.
  • Turner poured in a season best 22 points on 9-for-12 shooting from the floor. Turner nearly netted a double-double with eight boards.
  • Mabrey nearly recorded a double-double with 17 points and eight assists.
  • Notre Dame tallied 29 assists on 38 made field goals. The 29 assists were its second highest game total on the year.
  • All five starters finished in double figures for the 10th time this season.
  • With three treys tonight, Mabrey now has 255 threes in her career, just seven back from Alicia Ratay's program record.

Up Next
The Irish return home to Purcell Pavilion for the final regular season game of the year on Sunday. The Irish will play host to Virginia and celebrate the seniors with tipoff set for 12:30 p.m. ET, airing live on Raycom Sports Network.

Debbie Antonelli agrees in an SBNation article.

Parity is what we asked for, and now we have to manage it with a format change to grow the game. We don’t want to seed with the ‘G Curve’ — geography curve. We want an ‘S Curve’: earned seeding.

But as noted in the Creme article posted earlier today:

UConn to Albany and Oregon to Portland: Whether they end up as No. 1 or No. 2 seeds, count on the Huskies playing in the Albany Regional and the Ducks staying in their home state.

With the way the committee assigns regional placement based on a team's position on the S-curve, there is no scenario in which both UConn and Oregon finishing in the top six puts them in any other region.

Which players need more touches to take their teams to the next level?
Jenn Hatfield

https://medium.com/her-hoop-stats/which-players-need-more-touches-to-take-their-teams-to-the-next-level-9dd503ad0305

Interesting article discussing players points per scoring attempt (PPSA) and usage. The thrust is getting the ball to the right person such as Iowa's Megan Gustafson. They discuss several teams and players who should see the ball more to make the team more effective.

With one them they note that the team might be better served by the leading shooter actually shooting less and passing more. A few of us, particularly me, have chided Arike for too much shooting and not enough passing to open teammates over the past few years. This year she strikes me as much more effective player as now when she drives the lane and the defense collapses instead of bulldozing through a crowd she now will dish to Bri, Jess, or Mik, in the low post or kick it out to Marina in the corner. In the process she's forcing defenses to honor her teammates shooting prowess leaving Arike with more one on one situation's instead of the 1 on 3 or more of the past few years. I noticed in the Syracuse that Arike also seemed to embrace the Princeton offense more than she had. There were several possessions where ND passed the ball 4, 5, or 6 times before taking and hitting a shot.

...

Based on the advanced stats, other teams might consider sharing the ball a little differently than they have been this season. If a team’s highest-usage player is not a particularly efficient scorer, the head coach might consider running more plays for another player or even using the highest-usage player as a decoy to create space for others on offense.

...

These teams could make a deep NCAA tournament run with a few tweaks:

...

Notre Dame: Even the defending national champions could stand to shake things up a little. Four of its five starters are averaging at least 1.21 PPSA, which ranks in the 96th percentile nationally. The one starter who is not, Arike Ogunbowale, is averaging a very good 1.09 PPSA, but is also using the most possessions on the team, with a usage rate of 30.2%. If her shots aren’t falling, she might look to find fellow guard Marina Mabrey (1.28 PPSA, 19.8% usage rate) or dump the ball inside to forward Brianna Turner (1.26 PPSA, 20.5% usage rate) more often.

...

McGraw a Naismith Coach of the Year Late Season Candidate

ATLANTA – The Atlanta Tipoff Club shared its late season candidates for the 2019 Werner Ladder Naismith Women's College Coach of the Year on Wednesday. Karen and Kevin Keyes Notre Dame head coach Muffet McGraw was named one of the 15 candidates.

Last season, Coach McGraw was a Naismith Coach of the Year semifinalist, but picked up national coach of the year honors from USA Today, espnW and the Associated Press. The rest was history after that, as she guided the Irish to their second national title, becoming the sixth different coach with multiple championships.

On Dec. 30, Coach McGraw became the fourth fastest Division I head coach to reach 900 wins. Then shortly after that, McGraw surpassed Jim Foster on the all-time win list for seventh place, now sitting with 914 in her illustrious career.

This season, Coach McGraw has guided the No. 4 Irish to a 26-3 overall record on the nation's No. 1 strength of schedule, achieving the No. 1 rated RPI. Notre Dame has earned eight wins over AP Top 25 ranked teams, including three against the Top 10, both of which leads the country.

In the nation's No. 1 rated RPI conference, the ACC, the Irish have compiled a 13-2 record, and are one win away from at least a co-share of the regular season title. Thus, a win on Sunday would give Notre Dame its sixth straight ACC championship.

Ogunbowale, Young lead Notre Dame in 103-66 rout of Virginia

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Even Notre Dame's leading scorer, Arike Ogunbowale, couldn't find enough words to describe the triple-double performance of Jackie Young off the bench as the No. 4 Fighting Irish routed Virginia 103-66 Sunday for their sixth straight victory.

"The first one to get a triple-double twice in one season at Notre Dame?" Ogunbowale said after scoring 24 points, going 6 for 8 from beyond the arc, to lead five Irish players in double figures. "Jackie was amazing."

Young, a junior guard who normally starts, had 22 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists after coach Muffet McGraw elected to start walk-on Maureen Butler on Senior Day. Young, who had a triple-double earlier this season at Tennessee and missed another by two rebounds last Monday at Syracuse, replaced Butler at the 2:04 mark.

"Jackie wanted to steal the thunder today," McGraw said after the Fighting Irish (27-3, 14-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) won a share of the regular-season title with No. 3 Louisville for the second straight year but will be the No. 1 seed in the ACC Tournament this week. "Just a great day off the bench . Jackie so willingly gave up her start and then came in and had the best game of her season."

It's all about the team for Young, who missed Notre Dame's 78-73 loss at North Carolina on Jan. 27 with an injury and struggled along with her teammates in a 72-65 loss at Miami on Feb. 7.

"We knew we had to focus and finish strong," Young said. "We've really focused on our defense. When we play defense, I think we're the best team in the country."

Brianna Turner had 21 points on 8-of-9 shooting with six rebounds, four blocks, three steals and three assists for Notre Dame, and Jessica Shepard had 19 points and eight rebounds. Marina Mabrey finished with 12 points, seven rebounds and eight assists as the trio and Ogunbowale played their final regular-season game at Purcell Pavilion.

"Jackie could literally average a triple-double if she wanted to," Turner said after the Irish, who are expected to start the defense of their NCAA title at home, passed the century mark for the seventh time on 55.1 percent shooting and had 28 assists on 38 field goals.

Jocelyn Willoughby scored 19 points and Lisa Jablonowski added 17 for Virginia (11-18, 5-11), which was held to 32.5 percent shooting.

"They are very impressive," Virginia coach Tina Thompson said. "They shoot the ball extremely well, have two posts (Turner and Shepard) who are very talented and Young is becoming a very versatile player."

The Irish started with a 12-0 run -- their 38th streak of 10 points or more this season -- on way to a 16-2 lead at the 6:40 mark and used 60-percent shooting (12 of 20) to take a 29-16 first-quarter lead. It was 53-33 at halftime as Notre Dame scored its last nine points from the free-throw line and did not hit a field goal for the final 5:32.

But that changed in the third quarter as Notre Dame hit nine of its first 12 shots. Young made a 3-pointer with 3:40 left to give the Irish a 30-point lead, 70-40. She then grabbed her ninth rebound and dished out her ninth assist to Mabrey for a 3-pointer that gave the Irish an 83-47 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

BIG PICTURE

Virginia: The Cavaliers, suiting just eight players, were held to 27.3 shooting (12 of 42) in the first half by the Irish. But they managed a 15-10 edge in second-chance points because of their scrappiness underneath, getting 15 offensive boards. They finished with 20 offensive rebounds among their 37.

"As a team we continued to battle," Thompson said. "After we shook off the first minutes of jitters, we started being ourselves."

Notre Dame: The Irish had their most production of the season as far as bench scoring with 27 points. Young, of course, scored 22 of them (Abby Prohaska had three and walk-on Nicole Benz had the other two). The Irish outscored Virginia 42-34 in the paint but only 7-4 on fast-break points despite their 28 assists. Nevertheless, at one point in the second half, Notre Dame hit 19 of its first 25 shots.

"I couldn't imagine a better finish for these seniors," McGraw said. "We just have so many weapons on offense and we're starting to peak now. We're in a great place, heading into the tournament as the No. 1 seed, just where we wanted to be."

#4 Irish Claim Share of ACC Regular Season Title
Jackie Young records second triple-double of the season

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – It may have been Senior Day for No. 4 Notre Dame women's basketball, but it was a junior who stole the spotlight on the way to a 103-66 victory over Virginia. Jackie Young became the first Irish player to record a two triple-doubles in the same season and tied Skylar Diggins-Smith for the most in a career. Young notched 22 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds in the Irish victory.

As a result, the Fighting Irish (27-3, 14-2) clinched a share of the ACC regular season title along with the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament. Notre Dame ties Virginia for the record with six consecutive ACC regular season crowns and now boasts eight straight when dating back to the final two years in the Big East.

"I couldn't imagine a better finish for these seniors on their last game at home this regular season," Karen & Kevin Keyes Notre Dame head coach Muffet McGraw said. "But Jackie wanted to steal the thunder today. She came up with the triple-double and had a great game off the bench because she so willingly gave up her spot to (senior Maureen) Butler so she could start and then came in and had the best game of her season."

Arike Ogunbowale connected on a career-best six three-pointers before finishing with a game-high 24 points. Brianna Turner tallied 21 points, along with four blocks, and is now riding a career best three straight games with 20-plus points.

Jessica Shepard finished two boards shy of a double-double with 19 points and eight rebounds. Marina Mabrey also flirted with a triple-double with 12 points, eight assists and seven boards. Mabrey now sits four treys shy of tying the all-time made threes record of 262.

How It Happened
All five seniors started on Senior Day, giving Maureen Butler her first collegiate start. Notre Dame scored four seconds off the tip before later recording a 12-2 run thanks to a 7-for-9 start from the field, building a 16-4 lead. Jackie Young, who came off the bench, tallied 10 points in the quarter, which included a three-point buzzer beater.

Up 29-16 heading into the second, the Irish continued to play team ball, recording 14 assists on 17 made fields at the half. The Irish defense limited the Cavaliers to just two field goals over the final seven minutes of the half, building a 53-33 advantage. By the midway point, Young, Turner, Ogunbowale and Shepard were all in double figures already. In fact, Young was already flirting with a triple-double by the half with 10 points, seven boards and seven assists.

The Irish posted their best quarter in the third, outscoring Virginia, 30-14, to go up 83-47. Notre Dame posted a 20-6 scoring stretch from 7:42 to 1:31.

At 8:11 in the fourth, Young grabbed an offensive board and dished off the assist to Turner, joining Marina Mabrey as the only two Irish players to come off the bench and record a triple-double.

"Jackie can average a triple-double if she wanted to," Turner said. "She's just that type of player. She can score, she can rebound, she get the assist -- really any stat she wanted to -- so her triple-double didn't surprise me."

All-in-all, the Irish reached the century mark for the seventh time this season. In addition, the normal starting five all finished in double figures for the 11th time this season.

Notes
  • With the win, Notre Dame moves to 8-2 all-time in the series against Virginia, including a 3-0 mark at home.
  • The Irish earned its sixth consecutive ACC regular season title, which ties Virginia (1991-96) for most in a row.
  • The Irish move to 90-5 in league play since joining the ACC for the 2013-14 season.
  • When dating back to their last two years in the Big East, the Irish have won eight consecutive regular season titles which stands as the second highest active streak in Division I, only behind Baylor's nine.
  • Jackie Young becomes the first Irish player to record two triple-doubles in the same season. She also joins Skylar Diggins-Smith as the only two in program history to tally two triple-doubles over their career. Young joins Marina Mabrey as the only two Irish players to record a triple-double coming off the bench. Young tallied 22 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists on Sunday.
  • Ogunbowale connected on a career-best six made three-pointers, finishing with 24 points. Ogunbowale was 6-for-8 from deep.
  • Turner posted 21 points and has now recorded three consecutive games with 20-plus points, which marks a career best.
  • With three three-pointers on Sunday, Mabrey moves to within four of tying the all-time made threes record of 262.
  • The Irish reached the century mark for the seventh time this season.

Up Next
The Irish travel to Greensboro, NC, for the ACC Tournament. The No. 1-seeded Irish will begin play on Friday, March 8, at 2 p.m. ET.

Despite the grind of the ACC tournament (if you keep winning), I don't fear the consequences of losing to Louisville on the last day.

It will be nice to raise another ACC championship (and I think we will), but if we don't, we should still be a #1 NCAA seed. (the current #2 line occupants should be seen by the committee as clearly not as good as ND )--- and I doubt it would keep us out of the West the way people are talking.

Whether the West is a bum deal or not seems to me to be totally dependent upon the full health or not of that Oregon forward --- that team is good without her but VERY vulnerable. If she's not full go, you can play a lot of gimmick defenses on them (especially face-guarding Boley so she can't even get a shot. Ionescu is a problem no matter what but one great player can't beat us.)

But .... one at a time.
