Nice to finally see them play.

Views:
1). Marina really makes a difference. Unlimited range and thereby wildly stretches the defense --- also gets us organized and holds the top of the defense together. Hard to believe that, as Muffet said, she's only had ONE true practice.
2). Arike mindboggling as usual with offensive explosiveness. We gotta have her, but she still isn't helping the defense at all. This lack of backside defensive physicality must drive Muffet crazy.
3). Jess is sacrificing a bunch of her game trying to impersonate Kat. I think that we'll get that worked out in time. Her huge weight loss will help her run the floor, but she looked less Rhino-like and that's not so good.
4). Jackie --- Warrior. All day long.
5). Brianna is good to have especially on D-boards, where we were a little soft.
6). Good to see Patterson and Prohaska with good lengthy (16) minutes. Both looked tough minded and big stage ready. We've had very tough bench players before who would come in and be completely no nonsense and battling. Prohaska looks like that type. The tall frosh (Cosgrove) looks a bit lost defensively, but appears to be a real bomber threat. We need another one.

Good game. Iowa had been averaging 90. Muffet rules again on scheme and adaptation. Let's see if we can deal with a guard-heavy UCONN.

Game Recap: Women's Basketball | 11/29/2018 10:00:00 PM

No. 1 Irish Handle No. 14 Hawkeyes, 105-71
All five starters finish in double digits

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The No. 1 Notre Dame women's basketball team displayed its most complete game thus far this season, toppling No. 14 Iowa, 105-71. The Fighting Irish (7-0) received double-digit scoring games from all five starters, led by Arike Ogunbowale's 30 points on 13-of-21 shooting. With the win over the Hawkeyes (4-2), the Irish move to 6-0 in ACC/B1G Challenge games.

"That's probably one of our better games this season," Karen & Kevin Keyes Notre Dame head coach Muffet McGraw said. "I'm really excited about the assist to turnover ratio. That's the thing that has been missing. We threw a lot of extra passes, a lot of really good passes."

How It Happened
Mabrey got the offense rolling with a three in the first seven seconds of the game, igniting a 14-6 scoring start for the Irish. By the end of the quarter, seven different Irish players had scored, resulting in a 28-17 lead.

Notre Dame and Iowa traded points in the second, 17 each, leading to a halftime score of 45-34. Ogunbowale had 15 points by the midway point, while Turner neared her double-double with nine points and seven rebounds.

The Irish struck fast and often in the third, starting the half on a 12-0 run that ballooned to a 20-3 scoring spree over the first four minutes and 53 seconds. The Irish shot 8-of-9 from the field in that span, building a 65-37 advantage over the Hawkeyes. Ogunbowale had 27 points entering the final period, while Turner, Mabrey and Young were all in double-digits, as well.

The Irish put up 26 more points in the fourth to cap a 105-71 total. It marked the second game this season Notre Dame scored over 100 points against a ranked team and the Irish have scored at least 90 against all three ranked opponents they have faced.

Player of the Game
Ogunbowale scored 15 points in each half to reach her total of 30. It marked the third game in which the senior has scored at least 30. No other Division I player has yet reached 30 points three times this season.

Stat of the Game
Eleven of the 12 dressed Irish players scored in tonight's win. All five starters scored in double digits. Ogunbowale led with 30 points, followed by 18 from Mabrey, 15 from Young, 14 from Turner and 10 from Shepard. Turner made it a double-double night with 11 rebounds.

Notes
  • Notre Dame now leads the all-time series, 4-0, against Iowa.
  • Coach McGraw earned career win No. 895.
  • The Irish are now 6-0 in ACC/B1G Challenge matchups.
  • Notre Dame's 105 points marks the second time the Irish scored over 100 points against a ranked team this season, formerly tallying 101 points against No. 15 DePaul. In addition, the Irish have scored at least 90 points against all three ranked teams they've played, dropping 91 against No. 9 Oregon State.
  • The Irish picked up their second consecutive ranked win and third on the year.
  • Ogunbowale has recorded seven straight games with 20-plus points, marking a new career-high stretch for the senior. Last season, she shattered the Notre Dame single-season record for 20-plus scoring games with 25.
  • Ogunbowale now has 40 career games with 20-plus points, which is good for fourth all-time at Notre Dame. Skylar Diggins-Smith sits in third place all-time with 45.
  • Big Game Jackie: In the three ranked games this season, Young is averaging 22.0 points and 5.0 assists.
  • Limiting turnovers: For the third consecutive game, the Irish have maintained single-digit turnovers.
  • Ogunbowale entered the night averaging 13.7 points in the first half. The senior had 15 at halftime.
  • Turner picked up her fourth double-double on the year and 25th of her career.
  • The Irish recorded their fifth straight game with over 50 points in the paint. The win was their sixth in seven games hitting that mark.

Up Next
Up next, the showdown between the top-two teams in the country – as No. 1 Notre Dame hosts No. 2 UConn on Sunday, Dec. 2, inside Purcell Pavilion. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. ET on ESPN.

Gonna have to shoot better than 20% from three to beat the #1 team in the land. Looking forward to watching the game Sunday and can't believe I have to wait a full two months before the fam sits behind the bench against UNC in Chapel Hill.

It's on the way! No. 2 UConn visits No. 1 Notre Dame on Sunday (ESPN, 4 p.m. ET) in what has become the premier matchup in women's college basketball. Their 49th meeting comes eight months after one of their most exciting games, in last season's national semifinals.

With that fantastic finish in mind, we rank the top 10 plays in series history -- but with a caveat. We're only going back to 2001, when the series began to become a rivalry. Coach Muffet McGraw's Irish and Geno Auriemma's Huskies first met Jan. 18, 1996, the season Notre Dame joined the Big East. UConn won the first 11 meetings, so it took a while for this to develop. UConn holds a 36-12 lead in the series. It has had its share of duds, as 33 games were won by double-digit margins. But it has also had some fantastic gems and unforgettable moments.

Turner a Senior CLASS Award candidate
Recognizes student-athletes who excel both on and off the court

11/30/18

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – University of Notre Dame women's basketball standout Brianna Turner was selected as 1-of-30 candidates up for the 2019 Senior CLASS award. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: classroom, community, character and competition.

Turner earned her bachelor's degree in design in May 2018 with a cumulative GPA of 3.138 and major GPA of 3.433. Turner also studied abroad in South Africa for three weeks during the summer of 2016. There, she learned about the culture of the country and also examined the cultural, historical and social psychological effects of racism and apartheid in South Africa.

Turner has volunteered at Oaklawn Children's Campus working with preteen boys, while mentoring a young girl. Oaklawn's programs are designed to support youth in developing healthy coping skills so they can return to and live successfully in their community. Turner has volunteered once a week, only missing when basketball travel interfered.

On the court, Turner is one of just three players all-time at Notre Dame to be at least a three-time AP All-American. Turner is also a three-time first-team All-ACC selection, two-time ACC Defensive Player of the Year, two-time Naismith Trophy Semifinalist, two-time Wooden Award National Ballot honoree, the 2016 ACC Player of the Year, a 2016 Honda Sport Award Finalist and the 2015 ACC Freshman of the Year.

The candidates will be narrowed to two fields of 10 finalists in February, and those names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans.

The Senior CLASS Award winners will be announced during the 2019 NCAA Women's Final Four.. For more information on each of the candidates, visit seniorCLASSaward.com.

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - It's a showdown between the top two teams in the nation, as the No. 1 Notre Dame women's basketball team (7-0) hosts No. 2 UConn (6-0) on Sunday, Dec. 2, in the Jimmy V Classic Game. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET on ESPN. Sunday's game is completely sold out, marking the first time since Feb. 26, 2017, versus Florida State.

PROTECTING THE HOUSE
Purcell Pavilion continues to be one of the toughest venues to play in women's hoops. Over the last 100 games at home, the Irish have only lost twice, with both losses occurring to UConn. The Irish are currently enjoy a 28-game win streak at home.

Notre Dame is 469-92 all-time inside Purcell Pavilion. The Irish have sold out Purcell Pavilion 52 times and boasts a 43-9 record in those instances, including winners of 34 of their last 38.

Most notably, however, has been how dominant the Irish have been in league play at home. Notre Dame has won a school-record 50 consecutive home conference games, beginning with a 66-47 win over Providence on Feb. 14, 2012, in BIG EAST play.

NOTRE DAME VS UCONN
Over the last 16 matchups between Notre Dame and UConn, the series is split even at eight-apiece. Furthermore, when looking at the last 10 years, Notre Dame has defeated UConn 8 times, all other teams have won just six.

In last year's Jimmy V Classic game in Hartford, the Irish had a 10-point lead with 7:48 left in the game, before a late surge from the Huskies resulted in an 80-71 loss. However, the Irish got the last laugh when Ogunbowale delivered the first half of her 'Ice Twice' in overtime to seal the 91-89 victory. Notables from the win include Jackie Young's career high 32 points and the fact that Notre Dame's 91 points were the most given up by UConn since relinquishing 92 to Tennessee (92-88 loss) in Knoxville on Feb. 1, 2001.

The win gave Notre Dame its fourth against UConn in the NCAA Tournament, which doubles any other team in the country.

Sunday's matchup will mark the sixth time Notre Dame and UConn will square off as the No. 1 & 2 teams in the country, yet only the second time with the Irish ranked No. 1. The previous was 17 years ago in the 2001 Big East Final.

BIG-GAME JACKIE
The title says it all about junior guard Jackie Young. Last season, the Irish played 16 ranked opponents and in those games Young outperformed her season scoring average, with 16.6 points on 51.8 percent shooting, to go with her 6.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists against top-25 teams.

The trend of Big Game Jackie has carried over into the 2018-19 season. Versus No. 15 DePaul, Young tallied a 28-point, 12-rebound, double-double, also converting a career best 11-of-12 from the free-throw line. Next was a 23-point, seven assist and nine rebound performance against No. 9 Oregon State in the Vancouver Showcase title game. Lastly, Young recorded 15 points, seven rebounds and six assists vs. No. 14 Iowa.

Thus, against the three ranked opponents this year, Young is averaging 22.0 points, 9.3 rebounds and 5.0 assists.

20-POINT STREAK
After shattering the Notre Dame single season record for 20-point games with 25 last year, Ogunbowale is on a whole another level this year. The senior is riding a career best seven straight games with 20 or more points. No other player in the country can claim that stat. The seven straight also set a new Notre Dame record, previously held by '97 grad Katryna Gaither, who started the 1996-96 season with six in a row.

Ogunbowale now has 40 career games with 20-plus points, passing Ruth Riley's 37 for fourth all-time. Next up is Skylar Diggins-Smith at No. 3 with 45.

30-POINT RECORD
After dropping 30 points on No. 14 Iowa on Nov. 29, Ogunbowale now has three 30-point games on the year. No other player in the country boasts three heading into the weekend.

Ogunbowale is now up to seven 30-point games in her career, tying Jewell Loyd for the all-time mark at Notre Dame. Loyd also holds the record for most in a season with four.

CHASING 900
Sitting just five wins away from 900 in her career, Coach McGraw is quickly approaching another major milestone. In fact, McGraw is on pace to become the fourth fastest Division I coach to reach the 900 career win milestone:

Geno Auriemma - 1,034 games
Pat Summitt - 1,072 games
Tara VanDerveer - 1,104 games

PROLIFIC SCORING AGAINST RANKED FOES
Three ranked matchups so far this year and three wins in which Notre Dame scored over 90 points. In fact, Notre Dame dropped 101 at No. 15 DePaul and 105 against No. 14 Iowa. The Irish are shooting 52.1 percent from the field against ranked opposition.

Last season, the Irish finished with 13 ranked wins, including 11 of which came away from home -- both stats led the nation.
