NOTRE DAME, Ind. – With the NCAA Tournament just over a week away, USA Today already announced its First, Second and Third Team All-Americans along with its Coach and Player of the Year. Karen & Kevin Keyes Notre Dame head coach Muffet McGraw received high praise in the Coach of the Year honor, while junior guard Arike Ogunbowale found herself on the Second Team list.
Despite four season-ending injuries which left the Irish with seven healthy scholarship players (no scholarship guard off the bench), Coach McGraw still guided Notre Dame to the program standard of success. The Irish achieved a 29-3 record against the No. 1 rated strength of schedule, defeating nine ranked opponents along the way, which stands as the second most in the country.
The Irish were also dominant on the road, picking up seven of those ranked wins away from home, which leads the entire country. Notre Dame also earned 15 total wins against the RPI Top-50, which also leads the nation.
Coach McGraw also spearheaded the Irish to their fifth consecutive ACC regular season title, going 15-1 in league play. The Irish also reached their fifth straight ACC Tournament Championship game and ninth consecutive conference tournament title game overall.
Player-wise, Ogunbowale picks up the first All-American honor of her career with the Second Team nod from USA Today. Ogunbowale is a major reason the Irish are on their way for a 23rd consecutive NCAA Championship appearance and a projected No. 1 seed.
Ogunbowale averages an ACC-best 20.2 points per game, which also ranks 24th in the country. Her 20 games of 20-plus points also leads the ACC while tying Notre Dame’s all-time single-season record. Ogunbowale’s 646 total points stands as the eight most for a single-season, while her 20.2 ppg ties Beth (Morgan) Cunningham for the second most, with Katryna Gaither holding the top-spot at 20.4.
NOTRE DAME, Ind. - For the 23rd straight year and 25th time overall, the University of Notre Dame women's basketball team is dancing in the NCAA Championship. The Irish were named a No. 1 seed in the Spokane Regional and will host First & Second Round action inside Purcell Pavilion starting on Friday, March 16, at 5 p.m. ET.
The Irish received a No. 1 seed for the seventh consecutive year and eighth time in program history. Notre Dame is 30-6 all-time as a top seed. In addition, Notre Dame received First & Second Round hosting duties for the 13th time, where they are 18-2 in NCAA play inside Purcell Pavilion, including the winners of 12 straight.
To continue the winning streak at home, the Irish will first battle CSUN at 5 p.m. on ESPN2. The Matadors went 19-15 overall and won the Big West Tournament after upsetting No. 1 seed UC Davis.
The nightcap of Friday's First Round doubleheader will feature No. 8 seed South Dakota State clash with No. 9 seed Villanova at 7:30 p.m. on ESPN2. The Jackrabbits of South Dakota State are making their eighth NCAA Tournament appearance after going 26-6 and winning the Summit League Championship. Meanwhile, Villanova is making its 11th NCAA appearance and first since 2013 after going 22-8 overall and 12-6 in the Big East.
Notre Dame's tournament resume certainly spoke for itself: a 29-3 record on the nation's No. 1 strength of schedule, the second most ranked wins (9) in the country, the most ranked wins away from home (7), the most RPI top-50 victories (15) and a fifth straight ACC regular season title in the nation's toughest-rated RPI conference.
As a conference, eight ACC teams made the Big Dance, which tied the league record set in both 2014 and 2015. The eight teams were the most of any conference this year.

Notre Dame claims No. 1 seed after injuries and tough schedule.Notre Dame coach Muffet McGraw explains everything her team has endured through this season including many injuries but also gives insight on a special turning point of the season.
ATLANTA - On Wednesday morning, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced the four finalists for the 2018 Werner Ladder Naismith Women's College Coach of the Year award with Karen & Kevin Keyes Notre Dame head coach Muffet McGraw making the final ballot. She is joined by UConn's Geno Auriemma, Oregon's Kelly Graves and Mississippi State's Vic Schaefer.
Coach McGraw is a three-time winner of the Werner Ladder Naismith Coach of the Year award, previously earning the accolade in 2001, 2013 and 2014.
This year is proving to be one of the best in Coach McGraw's illustrious Hall of Fame career. In fact, already, Coach McGraw has been dubbed Coach of the Year by both USA Today and espnW.
Despite the injury obstacles and adversity faced, the goal never wavered from eying a national title. The Irish, through it all, went 29-3 on the nation's No. 1 strength of schedule, ultimately earning their eighth No. 1 seed in the NCAA Championship in program history.
Notre Dame knocked off nine top-25 ranked teams along the way, including three in the top-10 in South Carolina, Tennessee and Florida State. Once again this year, the fans will have a say in determining the winner. Between March 19-30, fans can visit Naismith Fan Vote | Citizen Naismith Trophy to cast their ballot for one of the four finalists. Voting ends at 6 p.m. ET on March 30, and fans are limited to one vote per day. Lastly, the fan vote will account for five percent of the total vote.
The 2018 Werner Ladder Naismith Women's College Coach of the Year will be announced on Saturday, March 31.
