No. 5 Irish Down No. 19 Duke, 72-54 :: Notre Dame Women's Basketball :: UND.COM :: The Official Site of ND Athletics
Feb. 4, 2018

DURHAM, N.C. – As the saying goes, some streaks are made to be broken. The No. 5 University of Notre Dame women's basketball team did just that at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Sunday afternoon, ending No. 19 Duke’s 30-game home win streak with a 72-54 victory.

Meanwhile, with the win, the Irish (22-2, 10-1) extended their own streak against the Blue Devils (18-6, 7-4), winning their 14th straight and 16th overall.

"I’m so proud of this team," Karen and Kevin Keyes Family Women's Basketball Head Coach Muffet McGraw said. "We have been on an incredible grind. The season is long and we haven’t had a bye yet.

“We played another game on the road, against a ranked team, in front of a big crowd. It’s really been a battle of mental toughness.”

How It Happened
Notre Dame’s defense set the tone in the first quarter, holding the Blue Devils without a field goal for over five minutes of the period. The Irish capitalized by building a 10-0 run on baskets from four different scorers. Notre Dame tallied seven fast-break points en route to a 13-12 lead after the first quarter.

The two sides battled back-and-forth to start the second, as the game witnessed eight total lead changes. Marina Mabrey led all Irish scorers with seven points in the period. Furthermore, four consecutive points from Kristina Nelson, followed by two Mabrey free throws, guided the Irish to a 33-27 lead before Duke cut the halftime deficit to 33-29.

Duke’s Lexie Brown, who was limited to just two points in the first half, made a three-pointer to even the score at 36-36 three minutes into the second half. However, back-to-back threes by Kathryn Westbeld and Arike Ogunbowale helped the Irish regain the lead, up 42-38 at the five-minute mark. Notre Dame took advantage of two Duke turnovers, going on a 12-2 run with the final seven points coming in a span of just 48 seconds.

The Irish owned a 54-46 edge at the start of the final period, when they added to their lead and pulled away from the Blue Devils. Mabrey’s three at the 3:56 mark gave Notre Dame its largest lead of the game at 68-52. The three-point field goal also gave the Irish their season-high ninth of the game as they went on to defeat the Blue Devils, 72-54.

Player of the Game
Marina Mabrey tallied a team-high 18 points with four rebounds and three assists, turning in her fourth straight double-digit scoring performance and 18th of the season.

Mabrey went 5-for-11 from the field, including shooting 4-for-9 from beyond the arc.

Stat of the Game
Notre Dame scored a season-best 19 fast-break points, including a total of 14 in the first half against Duke. The Irish shot 50-percent (9-18) from three.

Notes

Notre Dame leads the all-time series, 16-1, and have won 14 straight against Duke. The Irish are also 4-1 at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
With today’s win, the Irish ended Duke’s program-tying 30-game home regular season win streak.
The Irish achieved their seventh ranked win away from home, which stands as the most in Division I. Overall, Notre Dame earned its eighth ranked win on the year, which ties UConn for the most in the nation.
Notre Dame’s all-time ACC record is 72-3.
Notre Dame made a season-high nine three-point field goals.
Arike Ogunbowale’s 12 points marked her 23rd game of the season and seventh straight with double-digit points.
Jessica Shepard tallied her eighth double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. The game was her 19th with double-figure points.
Jackie Young’s 17 points marked her 17th game of the season of double-digit points.
Up Next

The Irish will enjoy some rest during its bye this week and will return to action for their annual Pink Zone game on Sunday, Feb. 11, vs Georgia Tech. For tickets, please visit und.com/buytickets.

Was travelling today (from SB to Dallas...great to land and have sunny 60 degree weather), so did not see any game. But really, Coach McGraw is absolutely one of the greatest! Beating a top 20 conference foe on the road, short handed, dominating the game. Hats off to the ladies!

Fun game - took the whole family. Local ND club had the entire section behind the bench sold out. Duke was really troublesome on the offensive glass but we picked up rebounding toward the end. I thought refs were letting them play a pretty high contact game, polar opposite to men's games in that same venue.

Good job getting Duke off the offensive glass in second half - first half we were getting demolished down there. Tons of length on Duke and was giving us fits for a while. Great win - busted a 30 game home winning streak. Love it.

Three of our warrior girls played the entire game.

Two of our warrior girls were wearing obvious reminders that even THEY were hurt (Jackie and Kat) let alone all our other terminating injuries.

Thank goodness Koko took off weight and improved agility or we'd have NO subs at all.

...... but Muffet, her Magic systems (she played triangle-and-two "junk" defense a LOT in the first half and got the game under control), and her warriors keep somehow marching on. And, despite nearly no subs, WE are the ones pulling away in the final quarters.

Just --- stunning.

Mabrey Article

Mabrey Article

By Anthony Anderson Tribune Correspondent Feb 7, 2018

Marina Mabrey heads into every game with the same goal — “to be better than I was the last game.”

Frankly, Mabrey’s been markedly better since Dec. 31, the date of Thompson’s season-ending injury, than she was before.

In those 11 games, she’s averaged 15.5 points, 5.4 assists and 3.5 steals. She’s registered a net field goal percentage of 59.8, drained 26-of-65 on 3-pointers for 40 percent and is 19-of-19 at the line.

By comparison, Mabrey’s figures in those same categories over the first 13 games this season were 11.8, 3.2, 1.2, 44.7 percent, 19-of-71 for 26.7 percent and 26-of-32.

By Anthony Anderson Tribune Correspondent Feb 10, 2018

SOUTH BEND — These last dozen have been even better than the first dozen, and those first dozen were good enough to qualify as the envy of almost anybody in the nation.

• The Irish are averaging 85.5 points and allowing 65.0 over their last dozen games. They were at 84.8 and 66.5 during the first dozen.

• The Irish have a glistening 54.7 effective field goal percentage over the last dozen games after already being among the country’s elite in the first dozen at 51.6. Effective field goal percentage (or eFG) is calculated from total points off 2-pointers and 3-pointers while ignoring whether a miss is a 2 or a 3. For the record, ND is also fourth in the nation among 349 Division I teams in 2-point percentage (49.6) and 80th in 3-point percentage (34.4).

• Irish opponents have actually climbed a bit as well on eFG over the last dozen games, 45.6 to 43.4 for the first dozen, but consider the next two items in truly evaluating total defensive effectiveness.

• The Irish are forcing 19.4 turnovers an outing over the last dozen games to 14.6 over the first dozen, cutting down the opponents’ chances and creating a few more transition opportunities of their own. Their own turnovers have stayed at 14.8 in each dozen.

• The Irish are committing a paltry 11.3 fouls per outing over the last dozen games (including 9.6 over the last eight), thereby rarely sending their opponent to the line, after landing at 14.1 in the first dozen. Their overall figure of 12.7 is sixth in the nation.

ON NOW!

ON NOW!

Game 25: #5/5 Notre Dame (22-2, 10-1) vs Georgia Tech (15-10, 4-8)
When: Sunday, Feb. 11 | 1:00 pm ET
Where: Notre Dame, Ind. | Purcell Pavilion (9,149)
Watch: RSN Watch List | ACCNE Stream | Evan Lepler & LaChina Robinson
Listen: Pulse FM 96.9 / 92.1 | Bob Nagle (PxP)

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – After receiving a well-deserved bye week, the No. 5 University of Notre Dame women’s basketball team gears up for the final five games of the regular season, starting with Georgia Tech on Sunday, Feb. 11, for the program’s annual Pink Zone game.

Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m. ET inside Purcell Pavilion, and will be broadcasted across regional sports networks along with ACCN Extra. For a full listing on where to watch the Irish (22-2, 10-1) take on the Yellow Jackets (15-10, 4-8) – click here.

PINK ZONE
During pregame of Sunday’s Pink Zone game, the Irish will be sporting customized warmups in which fans bid on to print a name of a loved one on the back. In addition, the coaches will also be sporting customized polos with the name of a loved one on the back as well. At halftime, fans dressed in pink will have a chance to participate in the on-court “human ribbon” activity and photo.

It’s also certainly not too late to get involved in Notre Dame’s Pink Zone efforts. Fans can join the 2018 Play4Kay Free Throw Challenge by pledging for every free throw the Irish make during the month of February. In addition, Notre Dame will be selling special Pink Zone t-shirts, fleece blankets, and green/pink shamrock writing pens.

Lastly, join us in the Monogram room after the game for an afternoon of Bingo. Refreshments will be available and all participants will have a chance to win some cool prizes. Tickets are just $20, and if you buy two seats you will get the third one for free.

WESTBELD’S WORLD
With her career slowly winding down, senior Kat Westbeld is leaving nothing on the table. Over the last three games in particular, Westbeld has shot 70.0 percent (14-of-20), averaging 11.3 points and 7.7 rebounds. In addition, the Ohio native currently ranks second both overall (.615) and in ACC play (.597) in shooting percentage.

Westbeld answered the call at FSU with the best game of her career - achieving a double-double with a career high 21 points and a season high 12 rebounds, leading the Irish in scoring for just the third time of her career. It marked the second double-double on the year and sixth of her career. Westbeld shot 8-for-11 from the field and 2-for-4 from beyond the arc, as her eight made field goals tied her career best.

BIG-GAME JACKIE
The title says it all about sophomore guard Jackie Young. Simply examine her score totals against the last four top-20 ranked opponents they’ve played:

- 23 points at No. 3 Louisville
- 18 points vs No. 6 Tennessee
- 16 points at No. 8 FSU
- 17 points at No. 19 Duke

All good for an average of 18.5 points.

DISCIPLINED DEFENSE
The Irish defense has been just as disciplined as disruptive as of late, ranking fourth in the nation in fewest fouls per game with 12.7. As a result, opponents have not been able to get to the free-throw line. Since the Louisville loss, the Irish have only allowed one team to reach double-digits in free-throws made. In that seven-game span, Notre Dame opponents are averaging just 6.6 made free-throws per game and 9.9 attempts per game.

BLINK AND YOU MISS IT
Notre Dame enjoys a quick strike transition offense and that definition has been exemplified over the last four games. In that stretch, the Irish have tallied double-digit fast break points in all four games, including 18 at No. 8 Florida State and a season high of 19 at No. 19 Duke.

LAST TIME VS GEORGIA TECH
Notre Dame remains unblemished against Georgia Tech with a 9-0 all-time mark, including a 4-0 record at home.

The two sides met back on Jan. 7 in Atlanta, in which the Irish cruised to a 77-54 victory. Notre Dame started the game with dominant offensive play, shooting 70.0 percent in the first half. Arike Ogunbowale poured in 12 first-quarter points before finishing with a team high 25 points. Shepard (12), Nelson (10) and Young (14) all finished in double figures as well. Defensively, the Irish held Georgia Tech to one field goal in the second quarter, outscoring the Yellow Jackets, 24-7, before taking a 48-18 lead into halftime.

Arike is HOT!

Game opened with Shep and Marina turnovers while GT took a 4-0 lead.

Arike hit a trey then Mabs found her a on a break for two PLUS 1.

Then Arike hit a deuce for 8 pts.

Shep joined the scoring on a fast break layup (ALL Alone) off a Mabrey pass.

Shep had another layup just before a timeout

This game is bad to watch. I know they have seven scholarship players but the defense is terrible. They just let anyone go anywhere in the zone. They are playing out of control with no flow. There press break is bad. Don’t understand why two girls, one being a ball handler, are at the other end of the court while they try to beat the full court press?
