Marina Mabrey heads into every game with the same goal — “to be better than I was the last game.”
Frankly, Mabrey’s been markedly better since Dec. 31, the date of Thompson’s season-ending injury, than she was before.
In those 11 games, she’s averaged 15.5 points, 5.4 assists and 3.5 steals. She’s registered a net field goal percentage of 59.8, drained 26-of-65 on 3-pointers for 40 percent and is 19-of-19 at the line.
By comparison, Mabrey’s figures in those same categories over the first 13 games this season were 11.8, 3.2, 1.2, 44.7 percent, 19-of-71 for 26.7 percent and 26-of-32.
SOUTH BEND — These last dozen have been even better than the first dozen, and those first dozen were good enough to qualify as the envy of almost anybody in the nation.
• The Irish are averaging 85.5 points and allowing 65.0 over their last dozen games. They were at 84.8 and 66.5 during the first dozen.
• The Irish have a glistening 54.7 effective field goal percentage over the last dozen games after already being among the country’s elite in the first dozen at 51.6. Effective field goal percentage (or eFG) is calculated from total points off 2-pointers and 3-pointers while ignoring whether a miss is a 2 or a 3. For the record, ND is also fourth in the nation among 349 Division I teams in 2-point percentage (49.6) and 80th in 3-point percentage (34.4).
• Irish opponents have actually climbed a bit as well on eFG over the last dozen games, 45.6 to 43.4 for the first dozen, but consider the next two items in truly evaluating total defensive effectiveness.
• The Irish are forcing 19.4 turnovers an outing over the last dozen games to 14.6 over the first dozen, cutting down the opponents’ chances and creating a few more transition opportunities of their own. Their own turnovers have stayed at 14.8 in each dozen.
• The Irish are committing a paltry 11.3 fouls per outing over the last dozen games (including 9.6 over the last eight), thereby rarely sending their opponent to the line, after landing at 14.1 in the first dozen. Their overall figure of 12.7 is sixth in the nation.
NOTRE DAME, Ind. – After receiving a well-deserved bye week, the No. 5 University of Notre Dame women’s basketball team gears up for the final five games of the regular season, starting with Georgia Tech on Sunday, Feb. 11, for the program’s annual Pink Zone game.
Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m. ET inside Purcell Pavilion, and will be broadcasted across regional sports networks along with ACCN Extra. For a full listing on where to watch the Irish (22-2, 10-1) take on the Yellow Jackets (15-10, 4-8) – click here.
PINK ZONE
During pregame of Sunday’s Pink Zone game, the Irish will be sporting customized warmups in which fans bid on to print a name of a loved one on the back. In addition, the coaches will also be sporting customized polos with the name of a loved one on the back as well. At halftime, fans dressed in pink will have a chance to participate in the on-court “human ribbon” activity and photo.
It’s also certainly not too late to get involved in Notre Dame’s Pink Zone efforts. Fans can join the 2018 Play4Kay Free Throw Challenge by pledging for every free throw the Irish make during the month of February. In addition, Notre Dame will be selling special Pink Zone t-shirts, fleece blankets, and green/pink shamrock writing pens.
Lastly, join us in the Monogram room after the game for an afternoon of Bingo. Refreshments will be available and all participants will have a chance to win some cool prizes. Tickets are just $20, and if you buy two seats you will get the third one for free.
WESTBELD’S WORLD
With her career slowly winding down, senior Kat Westbeld is leaving nothing on the table. Over the last three games in particular, Westbeld has shot 70.0 percent (14-of-20), averaging 11.3 points and 7.7 rebounds. In addition, the Ohio native currently ranks second both overall (.615) and in ACC play (.597) in shooting percentage.
Westbeld answered the call at FSU with the best game of her career - achieving a double-double with a career high 21 points and a season high 12 rebounds, leading the Irish in scoring for just the third time of her career. It marked the second double-double on the year and sixth of her career. Westbeld shot 8-for-11 from the field and 2-for-4 from beyond the arc, as her eight made field goals tied her career best.
BIG-GAME JACKIE
The title says it all about sophomore guard Jackie Young. Simply examine her score totals against the last four top-20 ranked opponents they’ve played:
- 23 points at No. 3 Louisville
- 18 points vs No. 6 Tennessee
- 16 points at No. 8 FSU
- 17 points at No. 19 Duke
All good for an average of 18.5 points.
DISCIPLINED DEFENSE
The Irish defense has been just as disciplined as disruptive as of late, ranking fourth in the nation in fewest fouls per game with 12.7. As a result, opponents have not been able to get to the free-throw line. Since the Louisville loss, the Irish have only allowed one team to reach double-digits in free-throws made. In that seven-game span, Notre Dame opponents are averaging just 6.6 made free-throws per game and 9.9 attempts per game.
BLINK AND YOU MISS IT
Notre Dame enjoys a quick strike transition offense and that definition has been exemplified over the last four games. In that stretch, the Irish have tallied double-digit fast break points in all four games, including 18 at No. 8 Florida State and a season high of 19 at No. 19 Duke.
LAST TIME VS GEORGIA TECH
Notre Dame remains unblemished against Georgia Tech with a 9-0 all-time mark, including a 4-0 record at home.
The two sides met back on Jan. 7 in Atlanta, in which the Irish cruised to a 77-54 victory. Notre Dame started the game with dominant offensive play, shooting 70.0 percent in the first half. Arike Ogunbowale poured in 12 first-quarter points before finishing with a team high 25 points. Shepard (12), Nelson (10) and Young (14) all finished in double figures as well. Defensively, the Irish held Georgia Tech to one field goal in the second quarter, outscoring the Yellow Jackets, 24-7, before taking a 48-18 lead into halftime.
