Pretty awesome that both the men and women won their tournaments and both had to knock off a higher ranked team to do it. Looking forward to a great basketball season for the Irish.

No. 6/6 Notre Dame Knocks Off No. 3/2 South Carolina, 92-85
Irish surge to 92-85 victory over South Carolina, win Gulf Coast Showcase championship

ESTERO, Fla. - In dramatic, come-from-behind fashion, the No. 6/6 University of Notre Dame women’s basketball team knocked off defending national champion No. 3/2 South Carolina, 92-85, to win the Gulf Coast Showcase tournament championship on Sunday.

With the win, Notre Dame (6-0) snapped South Carolina’s (6-1) 17-game winning streak and recorded its first victory against a top-five team since it defeated the Gamecocks at the 2015 Final Four in Tampa.

How It Happened
South Carolina opened the game with an 8-0 run, but the Irish quickly responded with a combined 12 first-quarter points from Arike Ogunbowale and Kathryn Westbeld. The Irish, which allowed four three-pointers in the period, finished the quarter trailing 28-18.

In the second period, the Irish found themselves down 33-24 at the 5:51 mark but responded with a 12-2 run, which was later extended into a 17-5 run, and capped by a Marina Mabrey three-pointer in the final seconds. Notre Dame ultimately outscored South Carolina 23-10 in the period to take a 41-38 lead into halftime.

The Irish wasted no time adding to their lead, accounting for the first six points of the half and running out to a 55-42 lead at the 5:42 mark of the third quarter. Back-to-back layups by Kristina Nelson and Jackie Young helped cap Notre Dame’s 14-4 run and 25-point swing after it trailed by as many as 12 points in the second period.

The Gamecocks cut the Irish lead to 59-51 with 2:07 remaining in the third, but the Irish regained their double-digit lead at 66-55, courtesy of Mabrey’s second three-pointer and four straight points from Young.

South Carolina attempted to mount a comeback in the final period, when A’ja Wilson scored 18 of the team’s 30 points, but the Gamecocks could not keep pace with the Irish. Led by Ogunbowale’s 10 points and critical free throws in the fourth quarter, Notre Dame held off the Gamecocks, defeating South Carolina 92-85 to take home the Gulf Coast Showcase title.

Player of the Game
Jackie Young recorded her first career double-double, collecting 22 points with 10 rebounds. It marked the second straight game in which Young tallied 20+ points and third overall on the season.

Young’s performance also marked her sixth straight game with double-figure points -- the 17th such game of her career.

Stat of the Game

Notre Dame’s 92 points marked the most points scored against South Carolina since North Carolina defeated the Gamecocks, 93-85, on Dec. 20, 2009, in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

All-Tournament Team
Notre Dame’s Jackie Young was named the Most Valuable Player of the Gulf Coast Showcase, averaging a team-best 19.3 points per game and 7.6 rebounds per game in the tournament. Young collected a career-high 23 points in Notre Dame’s semifinal win over South Florida.

Arike Ogunbowale also earned a spot on the all-tournament team, averaging 18.6 points per game with 8.0 rebounds per game in the tournament.

Notes
With tonight’s win, the Irish take a 3-2 lead in the all-time series against South Carolina.
The last time the Irish knocked off a top-5 ranked opponent was on April 5, 2015, when it defeated South Carolina at the Final Four in Tampa Bay
Ogunbowale scored a season-high 23 points with seven rebounds and five assists, recording her fourth game of 20+ points.
Young entered tonight’s game averaging 6.0 ppg in the fourth quarter this year (six fourth-quarter points tonight)
The Irish join the ranks of past Gulf Coast Showcase tournament champions Baylor (2016), Stanford (2015), UConn (2014) and Middle Tennessee (2013).

Up Next
The Irish road tour rolls back to the Midwest on Wednesday, Nov. 29, when Notre Dame takes on No. 25/22 Michigan in Ann Arbor as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m. ET on the Big Ten Network.

Irish up by 3 at the half over South Carolina. I'm impressed with Coach. I had this season pegged as a throwaway because of the injuries and transfers but she's got these girls playing at a high level.

It certainly was a frustrating offseason, wasn't it?

Muffet and the team would have struggled mightily if the NCAA didn't grant Sheppard immediate eligibility, considering Turner is out for the year and Westbeld can't get the foot 100% healed yet. Sheppard has done a good job so far considering she didn't even think she was going to play this year; I expect her to get better as the year goes on and she gets more comfortable in the system. The two players that we aren't talking about enough is Ogunbowale and Young; at this rate, there is chance they both are All-Americans and first team all-ACC. I fully expected Young to be the best Notre Dame guard since Jewel and she seems to be well on her way.

Another player that has been a pleasant surprise is true freshman Mikayla Vaughn. She has done a great job coming off the bench to give Sheppard a breather. She'll be a good one in South Bend.

I hate looking ahead, but next year's starting 5 and bench is gonna be pretty nasty:
PG: probably Gilbert (5:s: true frosh in 2018-19)
G: Mabrey
G: Ogunbowale
G: Young
F: Turner

Bench:
Sheppard (6'4")
Vaughn (6'3")
Patterson (6'3")
Cosgrove (6'3")
Nixon
Prohaska

McGraw will have A LOT of length to work with.

We'll see. I think the consensus right now is that Jordan Nixon is coming in to run the point. Though Gilbert is capable of doing it, I think Muffet made allusion of her being more of a Kayla McBride clone(if that is possible).

Wonderful start to the season. We will win a bunch of games ... but this team is vulnerable in my opinion.

It is so "big heavy" (even Arike and Jackie are big for their positions --- not meaning height but physicality and where on the floor they are best) that we just have to pray that Lili and Marina are NEVER hampered. They are literally all we have to organize this team. (unless Mychal comes back, Kat is, absurdly, probably the best offensive stabilizer we have after our lonely two guards.)

And even if we are so lucky with Lili and Marina, we need our All-American (Jackie) available every minute every game --- what a player/winner/fighter. Sometime, inevitably, she'll get into early foul trouble and then we'll see who steps up and takes on her heroism --- my guess it will be Shepard.

As to the always-pleasant romanticizing about next year --- fingers all crossed for a really good point guard --- I'll bet that Shepard starts and Turner begins her road back on the bench, but as a virtual starter. Shepard, I believe, will ascend to near All-American stature as this season goes forward (I'd still like to see her play visually, but this is my hunch.) This situation looks so much like "twin towers" that it's hard not to see it in place most of the time next year. That means Jackie, Arike, and Marina rotate and hopefully everyone accepts their role. --- rather weird to imagine a line-up with a consensus All-American (Young) and a past consensus All-American (Turner) and someone that has the physicality of an All-American (Ogumbawale) and someone who just might be an All-American without much stretch (Shepard) all occupying the floor at one time --- that will also be a challenge to Muffet to somewhat change her offensive philosophy to accommodate the raw physical presence of that team --- a situation in transition with the current bunch (ex. this year's less production in three point play and, sadly, assists off beautiful passing.)

....... I can't wait to actually SEE them play --- so much more to know about how this team works.

By the way: someone said that Lili had to be led off the court after the game and missed the team picture --- True? Injury? Extreme fatigue? Sickness? Just BS?

Bob Nagle commented post game that Lili had to helped off the court. I believe she fell or was knocked to the floor late in the game. Apparently bodies were banging during the game. I recall Jackie caught a shot to her face that required an injury timeout. Refs called a PF on her and a Unsportsmanlike foul on the SCar player. Anyway haven't found any injury report. No mention in the ND PR or the SBT article.

I think Coach McGraw is figuring this team out. It sounded like we played aggressive defense, looked for transition scoring, and crashed the boards hard. The big weakness I think we have is defending the three pointer. If teams get hot they could run the score up on us pretty quickly because we are going to have to play big and we might be a little slow getting out to those shots. That's why I like the aggressive D from the guards and I wouldn't mind maybe a trapping zone to take advantage of our height and reach. Countering teams ability to hit the three will probably be our biggest problem all year.

On offense, I like pushing the pace. All of our guards are really good getting to the rim and finishing, but when we play half court offense I think the lane gets a little crowded. Having the depth of bigs could help us push the pace because they can more easily rotate to the bench when they need a break and we wouldn't miss a beat. Pushing the pace will also hopefully force teams to get back on defense and limit second chance opportunities.

I believe that Muffet has always wanted to push the pace if the pace advantage actually is there --- but she absolutely NEVER wants just to do something arbitrarily --- she is the Empress of Discipline and very intolerant of anything like reckless play (note her battle taming Arike last season.)

That said, this team has two players who provide giant problems for opponents in transition. Arike is utterly unguardable in a loose ruck situation, and Jackie is utterly unstoppable cleaning such situations up. A downside of that is the extra risk of charges and back-climbing, but probably worth it.

With Lindsay on the trigger, this would be oh-so-safe. Not sure we have the right push-lady yet.

We apparently won this game handily with several "different" things going on:

1). Arike exploding all over the court (including three-point shooting) for 30-some points (only Jackie anywhere close);
2). Jackie and Jessica bombarding the boards;
3). Mikayla Vaughn not playing at all;
4). Lili not starting (did play 29 minutes --- trouble in paradise?)
5). Marina still O-fer on 3-point shooting.

Is there a rule for redshirting like in football when a player gets hurt in the first quarter of the season or whatever it is? Or could she get a medical redshirt for this year?

According to this 2012 article, YES. I don't know if there is something more recent.

How to Get a Medical Redshirt

Written by John Infante

Medical Hardship Requirements

To be eligible for a medical hardship waiver, a student-athlete has to meet the following criteria:

  • The student-athlete must suffer the injury during one of their four seasons of college competition or during the senior year of high school.
  • The injury must be incapacitating. That means it must be a season-ending injury.
  • The injury must occur prior to the start of the second half of the season.
  • The student-athlete must not have competed in more than 30% of the season or three contests, whichever is greater.

Erratum: There are 29 games on ND's Official Schedule. Thirty percent would be 8.7 games. ND had played 6 scheduled games (plus 1 exhibition game) when Vaughn injured her ACL in practice.

30% would be greater than 3 games and they haven't played more than 30% of their games, so she should qualify.

Irish Foursome Named to Citizen Naismith Trophy Watch List
Ogunbowale, Young, Shepard and Mabrey recognized

Nov. 30, 2017

ATLANTA – The Atlanta Tipoff Club announced 50 women’s basketball players to its Citizen Naismith Trophy Watch List on Wednesday morning, as Notre Dame’s Arike Ogunbowale, Jackie Young, Jessica Shepard and Marina Mabrey were all selected. The Irish’s four candidates marked the second most of any school, while the ACC made the top mark of all conferences with 10.

Ogunbowale, who also added WBCA Wade Trophy Watch list to her resume this week, ranks 34th in the country and second in the ACC with her 20.7 points per game. The junior already boasts five 20+ point performances on the year, including a career high tying 32 points in the win over No. 22/20 Michigan on Nov. 29.

Young picks up her first major watch list selection, heels off of being named the Gulf Coast Showcase MVP and the ACC Player of the Week. Young averages 17.9 ppg on 50.6 percent shooting, along with a 4.4 offensive rebounds per game average which ranks 23rd in the country.

Shepard nearly averages a double-double for the Irish with her 13.0 ppg and 8.9 rebounds per game, as the latter ranks fourth in the ACC. Shepard has collected a team high three double-doubles on the year.

Mabrey is the Irish’s fourth and final player with a double-digit scoring average, with 10.3 ppg. A preseason All-ACC selection, Mabrey has scored in double-figures five times this season and is shooting an impressive 53.8 percent from two-point range.

30% would be greater than 3 games and they haven't played more than 30% of their games, so she should qualify.

One should not do mental multiplication for a basketball thread using a 12 game football schedule. Mea culpa! Thanks for catching my error. O.P revised in RED accordingly.

We need very solid work from Marina and Lili with organization and ball-security, and then Arike playing basketball and not streetball. If we get that and no foul trouble, we have a shot at these people (fingers crossed.) ( the three "requests" I'm making are not unreasonable ones, I think; but foul trouble IS sometimes out of one's own hands.)
