Considering what my expectations were going into the season, I thought the season was a pretty big disappointment. McGraw had the best point guard in ACC history, arguably the best big in the country, and 2 incoming All-Americans. Yet, they still lost 4 games (2 to unranked opponents). Coach McGraw and the girls just simply have to be better. McGraw HAS to get another big to go with Turner. Nelson simply doesn't cut it. She has extremely slow feet, doesn't get 2 inches off the ground when she jumps, and she gives absolutely nothing on the offensive end.

I'll still give credit where credit is due. Arike was a lot better at the end of the season and Jackie Yound really came into her own in the last month or two.

But, with the talent pool being so shallow in women's basketball, Notre Dame should make the Final Four every season. The ACC Championship shouldn't be the goal anymore; that should just be another expectation. There is no reason why Muffet shouldn't be getting to NCAA championships and winning a handful of them

The only sports team that owes fans anything at ND is the football team. Why? Because fans/boosters/alums spend gazillions of dollars to put a winning product on the field. And even then I'd say it's not the student athletes that owe fans anything... it's really the coaches and administrators that do and have an obligation to meet "expectations."

So, in short, I don't respect any detractors of this team especially after the injury to Turner. The players who could play and the coaches who could coach did their best and came up a point short. Oh well, thems the breaks.

I don't think any team "owes" me anything.

There is no getting around it, you never miss an opportunity to show you're a jerk.

Fans who go to the games (as I do) and watch lots of women's BB (as I do) are never allowed to criticize anything about the team? Why not?

There is no getting around it: not making the Final Four, for this team, is a huge disappointment. It is particularly so when you hold a 14 point lead at halftime. Simply inexcusable.

The utter lack of defense has been a major ongoing problem in the program. UConn held excellent offensive ND teams to 58 and 53 points, respectively, in the 2014 and 2015 title games. Why can't we play elite defense like that? We're always in tight games because while we score 70 or 80 points, the other team does too. That needs to change.

McGraw has two 6'3 forwards coming in next year. She knows what she's doing.

I hope they're athletic because Kristina is a living example that it takes more than height to be a good big to have an impact in this offense

First off Kristina had a great second quarter, especially on defense. Obviously she has limitations but give her some credit cause she played 3/4 of the second quarter and held her own.

The scouting reports say both are long and athletic. Settle down

Hats off to the team for a pretty good year. Losing Turner was huge, but that's the way Bball goes.

Nobody important will care, but it makes me feel better to give out a few OMM awards for the Ladies:

A). National Coach of the Year: Muffet McGraw for taking a team with only one true leader, several significant injuries, a wild out-of-control talent, and melding them into a 33-win one-point-from-the-final-four joy to watch, of which every TV commentator said "Notre Dame is so smart."
B). First team All-American Point Guard to Lindsay Allen, for nearly single-handedly serving to lead this team with fire and determination and (nearly) error-free ball-handling (she made us almost impossible to press), leading to record-setting assists and every TV commentator gushing --- one of whom said she voted Lindsay ACC POY.
C). First team All-American Rookie team to Jackie Young, for coolness under fire beyond her years, supreme hustle to do the dirty work of defense and rebounding, and an evolved/stunning contribution to the offense once Turner was out.
D). On-court tough person and Cold Killer Award to Marina Mabrey who shows no "shake" whatsoever regardless of circumstances, and is developing into a game leader.
E). Warrior and Ice Queen Award to Kat Westbeld --- a pillar of Rock Salt settling the offense from the high post and doing it on one ankle. Muffet said: "Kat is the glue who holds us together."
F). Evolver of the year Award to Arike Ogunbowale for taming her ego and trying to understand what team basketball is about, while maintaining her shockingly high skill level.
G). Giving-all-they-had awards to Koko Nelson and Mychal Johnson despite their (different sorts of) physical limitations. Aly Patberg probably deserves this as well, but I don't know her situation as well.
H). Growing-into-her-game award to Erin Boley. Erin began to get her confidence late, but her coolness shooting (the first thing to arrive), and her attention to detail as regards hustling and rebounding finally showed up. This should be an "optimism for next year citation."
I). The loyalty to the team award to Diamond Thompson just because.

Well said. This team was peaking at the right time. They were looking great in the final part of the season and minus the third quarter against Stanford Coach had the team playing well after Turner's injury. I'm looking forward to next season.

Tough one to swallow, but it shows what type of TEAM McGraw has when you lose your AA center and just miss the final four.

Turner's All-America Honors Continue :: Notre Dame Women's Basketball :: UND.COM :: The Official Site of Notre Dame Athletics

Junior center Brianna Turner named to USBWA's All-America squad for the second year in a row.

March 29, 2017
By Leigh Torbin

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - All-America accolades continue to roll in for Notre Dame’s Brianna Turner. On Wednesday, the junior forward from Pearland, Texas, earned one of 10 spots on the USBWA’s All-America team. Also a USBWA All-America pick in 2015-16, Turner’s selection for 2016-17 makes her the fourth two-time USBWA All-America honoree in Irish lore, joining Skylar Diggins (2012 and 2013), Jewell Loyd (2014 and 2015) and Ruth Riley (2000 and 2001).

Turner is one of the country’s top players at both ends of the court, leading the ACC in both field goal percentage (.619) and blocked shots (86). Turner stands eighth nationally in shooting percentage and, with just a handful of games left to be played, seems destined to rank in the top 10 for the third consecutive year. The two-time ACC Defensive Player of the Year, Turner stands ninth in league history in career blocked shots (263) and second at Notre Dame behind only Ruth Riley’s 370. Turner’s 1,456 points stand 16th in school history with one season still left to play. She averaged 15.3 points per game this season and led Notre Dame at 7.1 rebounds per game.

Turner scored in double figures in 29 of her 35 games played this year, including six efforts of 20-plus points. Her career high of 31 came in Notre Dame’s Feb. 19 win at No. 21 Syracuse before a women’s record crowd at the Carrier Dome. Turner recorded seven double-doubles this season with four of the seven coming against ranked teams (Washington, UConn, DePaul and Duke).

Turner has already been named recently to the espnW and Associated Press All-America squads along with this honor from the U.S. Basketball Writers Association. She is one of three Irish players, joining Lindsay Allen and Arike Ogunbowale, named to the WBCA’s all-region team, making her eligible for All-America honors from the sport’s coaches association. Those teams have not yet been announced.

Behind Turner, the Irish finished at 33-4 on the season, claiming the ACC regular season and tournament championships before advancing to their sixth Elite Eight in seven years.

Fairly typical chase-the-points idiots on the Writers side. Happy for Brianna, but two players from Maryland without Lindsay is bad BBall assessment. In my opinion, Lindsay is more deserving than the Oregon State player as well. (and in my unshared-with-anyone-else opinion: Lindsay is currently a better BBall player --- this is a team sport --- than the OSU fancy gunner, who, yes, has a much higher ceiling.)

The AA team should be: Plum (Captain), Wilson, two UConns, and probably Jones., with Turner, Allen, the third UConn, Wiese, and, grudgingly, Mitchell. (though I'd rather like to put Osafor in there somewhere --- a very strange talent.)

--- this is just using the consensus people; the real choices would probably pick some other folks like the FSU star forward, who I thought was a real problem to deal with.

Oh my!

Karli Samuelson goes down with an injury midway through the second period and Stanford couldn't hold a 9 point halftime lead being outscored 42-24 in the second half. So Car won by 9.

In the other game Miss St dominated the boards, +10, in first half taking a 36-28 halftime lead. State shooting poorly inside and outside the arc.

Con finally took their first lead of the game in the mid 3Q. End of 3, tied at 48.

Scoring trend going in opposite directions, State declining while Con is ascending. State by quarter has scored 22, 15, 12 points while Conn has gone 13, 15, and 20.

Con is shooting 52% overall, 50% from arc, and 67% from the line. State is +11 on the boards but only shooting 37%, 26% from the arc, and 78% from the line but has attempted 6 fewer free throws. State has taken 49 shots to Cons 33.

Samuelson got hit with an elbow in the throat on the a prior play which is now under review. I thought the contact was incidental as Samuelson was going underneath for a pass and pulled up short and the causing the two players to run into each other ... as the Con ball handler took the shoot instead of passing.

If Samuelson doesn't put on the brakes there's no contact.

Refs ruled one shoot.

On the next play Con drives to the basket, Williams gets position and both players go to the floor after contact ... and the ball rolls out of bounds. No foul called on either player. State gets possession and scores at the buzzer for the upset.

DOWN GOES CON 66-64.

Geno was quite gracious praising State players and head coach in post game comments. He firmly stated the better team tonight won. When asked about his opinion of the flagrant foul call he commented that the rule says a shot to the head has to be called according to the rules. He added that he thought the real question was why didn't the officials make the call when it happened. Why did they wait 30 seconds?

Really shocked at that last take by UCONN. You have to take the clock down and either win or go to 2OT, simple. I thought it was a selfish play by the ball handler to go for that with 14 seconds left. It has to be a wide open layup imo to leave that much time on the clock. Lot of pressure on them, though, being on the ropes like that. Hats off to Miss. St. I'd like to see a South Carolina double.
