Watched it with interest, and listened to Doris Burke (one of TVs best analysts) moreso. A few takeaways for what they're worth:
A). Lindsay Allen is an uber-All American. She's our Muffet-on-the-floor, our Fire-in-the-Belly, and our What-do you-need-now?-I'll-deliver super star. Doris gushes over her rightly.
B). Lindsay could use an occasional rest. Muffet told Doris that it's hard to do. Not having Mychal Johnson last evening made that more difficult. We need Johnson, Patberg, and MMabrey to be able to spell her a little or fouls will take us out in the NCAA. I didn't believe this until now, but Marina might just get there on this point.
C). Turner played hard all game when she was in. Doris thinks that she's still nursing some hurt on the right shoulder, but just a guess due to watching shot blocking etc (left arm seems to go higher than right more easily.) Brianna is not a bruiser though, and can still be pushed around by more thug-like centers.
D). Boley seems to have either gotten some message from Muffet (she's throwing herself more into the boards --- still not enough) and/or some playing confidence (she's making threes.) She's still not as good as Kat --- watching Kat show big over the high screens was wonderful. Kat's the most improved on the team.
E). Jackie Young's going to be an AA by next year. Doris said that if she were to build a team on a young player, JY would be at the top of the list.
F). Marina has developed as the season has gone, despite having a bad shooting night yesterday. Muffet doesn't want to take her out now because she now is intensely into the defensive concepts. Amazingly, it was Marina who finally slowed that Louisville player who scored 30+ down when we finally stunted their comeback and pulled away for the last time. (Muffet was desperate to the degree that she even employed Box-and-one a few plays just before that.)
G). And so it comes down to Arike, as it always does, it seems. She was very good for nearly all the minutes she played yesterday. She didn't "gun" it unconsciously. Doris remarked that Arike is FAR better for the team when she passes off her drives 50% of the time. She said that with team-orientation, and her new-found outside bomb, Arike is now essentially unguardable.
But, although Muffet has obviously gotten into her grill about remaining in-the-game defensively, Arike still violates that. Muffet had to quick-hook her in the second half for that. (usually this is lollygagging around off-the-ball screens or lousy backside help attention. On the quick hook, Arike ignored the "team-concept" handslap for her replacement (Patberg) and went straight to the seat not interacting with any teammates or coaches.
Doris was all over her for the display of self-centeredness. So, she's just a sophomore --- OK, everyone, including Muffet, knows that. It still means that our great coach has to do everything necessary to teach her to integrate with the entire system in place. {someone on this site objected to my calling certain on-court behaviors "cancerous." That's COMMON coach speak for aspects of play which spread negativity and depressed effort to other players. Slack play on defense and out-of-system gunning are the two most frequent "cancerous" behaviors. Muffet is trying very hard to beat both of those out of Arike's game. If this game is telling, that may have happened offensively. On defense it's still a work in progress.}
