Yes ND needs to spread the field but they also need to establish the run. Then the pass will be more effective.

I really, REALLY disagree with you on this one.

We tried the spread offense against GT, and it just simply did not work. At this point in time with such young players, we need to run our traditional offense so they can get as much practice in as they can get so they can be good later. I think that trying to run a spread offense again will not help, and simply put us in more of a hole. Michigan has faced two of the same, don't you think they're going to at least address that a little bit in practice?

We need to focus on our strengths, and considering that the only plays in the spread offense that didn't result in lost yardage ended in fumbles by Jones. We've wasted enough practice time on that. We need to go back to Weis's strong spot and run a pro-style offense. Let the O-Line learn their blocking scheme without changing it up every other week, and our QB will have more time to pick apart their defense. Throw it to Carlson, he's the vet receiver here and a legit pro-prospect. Put Aldridge and Allen in instead of Thomas. Yeah Thomas has seniority, but i thought that didn't matter. James and Armando have shown the most promise for our backfield.

I think Buckeyebacker is right. We will run the ball, but we will also spread the field a lot. Look for plenty of draw plays and screen passes, too. It helps that we can send Carlson and Allen onto the field and still come out with a "five-wide" formation.

Shark Attack, I'm not sure why you think this would be such a huge departure from the last two years. We're not talking about running an OPTION offense, just opening things up and making their guys chase us. That can still be done in a "pro-style" fashion - cf. the New England Patriots, for example. (Guys, am I right about this? I have to admit I'm no football guru.)

You right, basically you run your traditional offensive package. Just make a few adjustments for a couple players instead of trying to incorporate a whole new offense. Which we've seen didn't work.

No plan will work without giving the QB some time to drop back with out having 250 pounds barreling at him.

So here is my advice:

Again, I just don't see why spreading the field more often (as opposed to "running the spread (option)"), which is all that buckeyebacker was talking about, counts as "incorporating a whole new offense" ...

Keep a fullback in the back field at ALL TIMES. none of that one back stuff is going to work IMO. Attempt to establish a piece of a running game on this team and see what happens. oh and BLOCK!!!

Maybe some quick slants, to start the game off. No hitches. Slants.

If our #1 fullback could block, I'd agree with you. :) More seriously, I do think you're right as a rule, but if we go five wide, they ain't gonna be able to do much blitzing ...

I think a spread worked against Michigan because APP St. and Oregon are fast and athletic. We may see some 5 wide sets with Carlson in the slot (to spread the "D" out), but Clauson will be targeting 1 guy and then scrambling for his life.

BTW, don't think MU won't blitz if we spread them out. Zone blitzes can kill us. Our tackles can't pick up inside blitzes, let alone someone from the d-backfield.

Also, I will expect our "D" to do the same to Mullet head

My point is that they cannot run in the defensive backfield...I must admit that I dont know what ND's speed level is on the outside (WR's) but if they have any, and I mean ANY, speed out there they will run wild on their DB's. I see nothing wrong with a 4 wide set with a healthy blocking back, hell even a back up tightend in behind JC to pick up any blitzes. JC, to me, seems quite comfortable taking a 3 step and firing, Michigan cannot tackle, so FORCE them to do so! Get your tightend out on a 4-7 yard route and fire it in there...use those screens like long handoffs too

buckeybacker - I love the game plan. Spread them out, and do 3 step drops with some screens and draws. We did this a little last week against PSU, but never threw downfield...just swing passes. If we spread them out, we still need to have the threat of the run in this formation. If we line-up in the "I", we need to have the threat of passing downfield.

Seems simple to me...

The transcript Weis's press conference from today is up, and definitely worth reading. BGS has a breakdown of the highlights, and adds this:

Weis had high praise for Kamara and Tate, along with the near admission that Carlson needs to be more a part of the passing game. Is Charlie planning on opening up the offense a bit more against Michigan? We all saw what the spread option attack did to the Wolverine defense the past two weeks. ND isn't going to have Clausen running all over the field, but we might see more four and five wide sets designed to spread out the Michigan defense. Of course, that means the offensive line needs to instill some confidence in Weis this week that they won't get Clausen killed if he takes the tight ends and backs out of the pass blocking equation. Which way will Charlie go?

When we faced GT, we faced one of the best defensive teams in the NCAA and also put an option quarterback out there who threw what, 1 pass? We now have a natural pocket passer in with great skills against a michigan team whose strength is their offense, and minus their starting quarterback, i think we have a veery good chance of beating them as long as we spread the field and pass.

The line has came a LONG way in just one game...I say by Purdue game they will be a good OL. Right now we need to spread it out a little so there is not 8-9 guys in the box every play! 3 step drop and let Jimmy throw a Fly route to Tate first play of the game!

You've got it right there. The offensive line has been whats holding back our offense this year so far. We can't establish the run and end up having to throw the ball when we fall behind turning our offense into a predictable one dimensional scheme.

Even if we spread the ball we still need time to throw or set up lanes to run. I really think that if we get this o-line working together then our offense will be supprisingly explosive. I really like Clausen and think he proved himself last week by not breaking down even when the offense was completely disfuncitonal. I think AA can be effectively used as our speedster and dump off man while JA can be our power back once the o-line gets established.

To be honest, you have to admit that there was a level of improvement from week one to week two with the Irish and I'm excited to see what happens this weekend against Michigan.

Would like to see this happen. Would be great for momentum, or would be awful. If he were to be sacked on the first play, wouldn't help out our players mentality. Then again a 35 yard completion to tate may get them fired up!!

Yeah, but that's what I said last week too. I'm actually inclined to think they might be overconfident. And at some point, once the wheels are off, you've got to think they may well be off for good.

I agree buckeye...there defense is not up to par! The talent is there and they will be much better as the year progresses! Looking forward watching the OSU vs. Washington game btw! Should be a great game...think OSU wins because of their defense and turnovers!

This is a perfect example as to why the rankings should not come out until October!!!

This will be the lone time I root for the Buckeyes. I hope they blow them out. Tired of the 'Ty is 2-0 and Weis is 0-2 so ND made a mistake by giving Weis a big contract'.

Go Buckeyes. :sigh:

I don't know how to handle this weekend..so much emoition and mixed feelings. We've got the Yanks coming into fenway, ND going up against Michigan and the Buckeyes taking on Ty's boys.

I'm just trying to figure out what the odds are of me being totally content after the weekend....
