In the spirit of defining him by what he's not:
1. He's the best QB in his division, but not the AFC (that would be Brady).
2. He amasses passing stats in the regular season but gacks in the playoffs.
3. Spurrier owned the Vols during the Manning era. Tennessee won the NC the year after he left.
But my original point was not to rip him as a QB--he's very good, for sure. I'm just sick of his face on commercials, sick of Peyton hype.
Right. All on field issues that have to do with the other ten guys in the huddle with him and the 11 on defense. And it is hype, sure, but there really isn't much the NFL has to go with. I doubt Nextel is calling Odell Thurman and Chris Henry any time soon.
1. That's a pretty objective statement considering you're a Michigan fan. Just like everyone on this board probably thinks Joe Montana is the greatest QB of all time. Manning had a franchise built around him. Brady stepped into a team that was already built and is one tuck rule away from having one less ring on his finger. People forget just how close they came to losing. I'd rather be lucky than good (2005 White Sox).
2. So does the rest of his TEAM that plays around him. Where's that big mouth Vanderjagged now? Jerome Bettis is still thanking God every day they didn't make that kick. He'd be in a hole with Steve Bartman and Ray Finkel right now if they'd lost.
3. Yeah, he owned the VOLS. Spurrier's Gators beat a lot of peeps. Tee Martin was back the next season and Tennessee DID NOT repeat. And I have no idea where Tee Martin is now. Probably hanging out with Drew Henson while Manning and Brady do the dew.
Craig Krenzel QB'ed a national title winner, Maison. Come on.
They just had a story on Outside the Lines about this last Sunday. The guy has 5 ads all running at once, which is sure to be a bit much for people. Just like Tom Brady's Visa commerical and Donovan McNabb's Chunky Soup spots with his mom. We could get into the NFL and the marketing thereof, but we'd run out of thread space. What you do off the field matters a little bit more than what you do on it when it comes to NFL marketing.
Tom Brady will be Joe Montana and Peyton Manning will be Dan Marino. They're both going to Canton and I like each guy. McNabb too. All three are marketable.
Maybe Brady should go out and get more endorsements. He's got the rings.
