Waited till Sunday so any OSU players worried about the move would be too late to enter the portal till end of spring. Day probably already knew and the decision making mode of the last few days was fake.
So the right to transfer due to coach leaving team only applies to the HC leaving — Right?

I assume ND also made Knowles a competitive offer. I assume OSU and OU were willing to match PSU as well. It's not about ND "not wanting to win." As far as I'm concerned, its like a 5 star picking Michigan State over OSU and ND. Better to keep him away from OSU, which is clearly "ahead" of ND as a program, than Michigan State (or here, PSU), which isn't.

From the OSU perspective, this is worse than Golden leaving since it's another college job and effectively a local rival.

If we aren’t going with Mickens I’d look at the following.
Heacock
Ron English
Mike Tressel
Rossi
Blake Baker just because it would be a middle finger to Brian K
Phil Parker

Exactly. Missing on a guy isn’t indicative the program didn’t make an honest attempt.

The idea that ND can just go get anyone they want ended like 50 years ago. Everyone is on TV now with huge fan bases and deep pockets.

I would like to know his reasoning to leave OSU. Seems like odd timing to make what is a lateral move at best if you are looking at just the defensive side of the ball.

I heard he didn't like some of the staff at OSU and didn't get along with them. He's also from Philly, so that is why PSU makes some level of sense (other than the money, but I assume OSU was willing to match).

My own personal theory is that on some level he thinks the defense in Columbus is due for some level of regression with the amount of talent they're losing to the NFL, and it would be a couple of years to rebuild the young guys up, and you don't get offers to be the highest paid coordinator in history every year, so he made the leap. The other thing is, Big Game James could flame out in a couple of years, he just don't have that dawg in him. Maybe he thinks he could be in line to take over if they give Franklin his walking papers once they realize he's never getting them any further than he did this year.

I'm not entirely sure how this synchs up with the "all in" approach PSU is taking to this year. Knowles defense is famously sophisticated and it's not until the 3rd year that players really click with it. Look at the leap OSU made each year under Knowles. It's a good hire, but it will take some patience to blossom.

Sounds like from the OSU boards if it’s internal, it’s this guy not Laurinitias

As long as they consistently win 9+ games he can coach there for as long as he wants. They talk a big game about being one of the big dog programs, but deep down they know they are little house cats.

Golden and Denbrock carried a battered and bruised OL and entire defense to a Natty, not exactly the time to choose a coach with cheap being a main benefit

Choose Mickens because he is the best for the job not because it’ll be inexpensive
