What's Freeman's policy on being late for a meeting?

I'm more curious what drills he has in mind to prevent fumbles...
"They give it to Gray, and Gray is short...and the ball comes loose! The Bulls have it! With no one in front of him! You talk about a deflater..."

Minnesota board is in a deep depression about the prospect of this happening. But also too nice to say anything bad about anyone so complimenting ND and Rossi a lot too.

In both expanded posts about Golden and Rossi, mention was made about extended stay as DC. So sounds like continuity was a priority here.

Does anyone know anything about Rossi. I just looked him up and they say everywhere he has been Miinesota/Rutgers/Maine he gets promoted to DC within a year because he is the man.
Sounds alright to me. He and Freeman should be able to recruit together well.

My preference would be Golden of the two. I personally always give the edge to people who have spent time in the NFL and have spent time at major institutions. I believe the NFL guys react quicker with in-game adjustments and seem better prepared for different scenarios. Combining that with his prior experience being a DC and being a HC, I think he will bring some much needed experience. Can't tell about his want/desire to become a HC again, but I would take him given the two.

My first thought when you typed this was BVG. One has nothing to do with the other, but that's what popped in my head unfortunately.

BTW, did anyone catch the Urban Meyer interview with Dan Dakich? I only read the summary, but there was interesting blurb in there on how he compared the NFL to college. In short, he said that he spent 2/3rds to 3/4ths of his time recruiting as a college coach and the NFL was more scheme.

As the new staff comes together, all I could think about is that seems to be how Freeman is putting some of this together. Urban is scUMbag, but you can't argue the impact he made at Utah, UF and OSU. His words resonate. Just thought it was interesting and worth a share.

I'm with you on Golden but you do realize your criteria describes BVG?

Yea, just like it would have for other defensive guys like Mike MacDonald, Greg Schiano, Kerry Croombs, Derek Mason, Nick Saban, and so many others over the last 10-15 years. It doesn't mean it's full proof, as there are many people you can point to and say it didn't work. But that's what happens when you hire. Some work out, some do not.

TBF though, I remember having to google BVG to find out who the hell he was, and there is a strong argument to be made that NFL experience had little to do with why he got job versus previously working with BK at GVSU (cough Quinn cough).

yeah... but this is different.

Golden isn't a friend of MFMF and he's not coming in trying to install some crazy system that only works in a syphilis ridden brain.

MFMF made it clear it will be largely the same scheme and wants a good communicator who can recruit while bouncing ideas back and forth.

I like Al in this case. He has scads of experience and is dying for a shot to be relevant again.

Let's do it.

Given those two are best buds, I'm guessing Dakich was only tossing softballs to Meyer?

Let's do it.

Golden was a teammate with John McNulty who seems to have a lot of pull with these hires.

But yes you're right on the other stuff. Golden wouldn't install anything too crazy in fact I think he'd basically would be coming in to run Marcus Freeman's defense with potentially a few enhancements.

Loy thinks the DC search is down to Golden or Rossi

If it's really down to these two my thinking is that he wants Golden, but it's been too hard to have a real interview with him since the Bengals are still playing. If that happens to fall through he's got his backup plan in place. Just a thought.

I think it sounds like Freeman is pretty torn. The more that comes out about Rossi the more appealing he is.

We know Freeman cares about continuity. If he just wanted the best option right now it would have been Belk, but everyone knows he is rising fast and will be taking a head job somewhere ASAP. Rossi is allegedly happy being a DC4L. Golden allegedly wants the job bad, and would stay for awhile.

Golden and Rossi are both intriguing in their own ways. Rossi is apparently a defensive savant, and players just connect with him, fast. Golden has a ton of useful experience and would be a great recruiter in NJ/PA/MD. He also has that NFL pedigree now that never hurts.

I feel like I would be more excited about Rossi but either way it's going to be interesting.

I think either coach would work.

I wonder if Golden is actually waiting to see how things shake out. I wonder if Golden would choose ND DC over the NFL DC? If Lou Anarumo gets a HC job Golden could be in line for a promotion to DC with the Bengals or Anarumo could choose Golden as his DC whereever he ends up.

That being said I don't think Anarumo gets hired this cycle . I think he's getting a couple interviews to raise his profile for a future cycle.

I wonder if Golden is Freeman's top choice. Because Rossi if offered right now would walk from Minnesota to South Bend through the snow to be DC for Notre Dame.

Based on the 247 reports it sounds like Freeman wanted to get through his recruiting trips last week and this week, and then next week he is going to iron out the hires.

In other words it's Freeman's schedule leading to the delays, not the candidates schedules. I think he could interview and hire Golden now if he wanted to, that wouldn't be unheard of. He just hasn't had the time.

My worry on Rossi would be he in general has played with a slow pace offense on his side and against mediocre - bad offenses that are “pro style”, putting it generously. Maybe he is a guru but he hasn’t been tested much.

True but Minnesota still ranked top 11 in the primary defensive categories. Also, there is this:

"No matter where he has stopped or what coaching role that school brought him on, Joe Rossi has always been promoted to defensive coordinator after just one season. It started at Thiel College, then happened again at Maine, Rutgers and Minnesota. When you’re the smartest guy in the room, people take notice."

I'll give you Wiscy and Iowa, but most of the B1G have moved away from the ground and pound. Purdue and Illinois are in their division so they have to play them every year. Good coaches adapt.

Sure but IU and Northwestern are both legitimately awful at offense. Point being, almost no one in the B1G successfully runs RPO spread offenses, which will be a large part of our schedule given the ACC ties. Minnesota were also snails at times offensively which is a cautionary tale of Jay Bateman. Not saying Rossi can’t coach, it’s just their are environmental factors to what he has faced.
