5 star Philure transferred, couldn't beat out Book so he didn't pan out. That's why we had to bring in Coan and he played pretty well for a "Wisconsin backup." Probably would have gone undefeated if our OL hadn't been such a mess for half the season and the defense could have defended a pass or two against Cinci.

Yep. Jurkovic is the hole here. If he had worked out - either beat out Book or waited his turn - he'd have been our starting QB in '21, maybe '22 as well, then in slides Buchner with two years as a backup under his belt and two or three to play. That fail wasn't recruiting, it was development - for whatever reason.

The Cinci loss was pretty much because we gifted them two turnovers in the red zone but yes…. Our OL at the beginning of the season was a mess and the QB situation was mishandled. Coan was fine but we weren’t beating elite teams last year with him at the helm

It was a bad eval by Sanford/Denbrock.

Loy said he should have an update on the DC today. My guess is more along the lines of who is getting serious consideration vs. an offer going out.

Driskell yesterday said it's down to 4:

Belk from UH, Rossi from MN, Lukabu from BC, or Golden from the Bengals

QB recruiting and development is complex because a lot of “top” guys simply can’t get the job done at the next level. A lot of 5-star guys that ND recruited — Blake Barnett, Gunner Kiel, Hunter Johnson — and people bemoaned not getting them or them transferring… and then it turns out they can’t play.

Lincoln Riley has lived on the transfer portal. I think Caleb Williams is going to be the first QB he actually scouted out of HS and then “developed” into a good player. Ohio State chose Dwayne Haskins over Burrow (lol) and then went and got Fields from the portal. Bryce Young / Trevor Lawrence situations are outliers.

Short of firing Rees and bringing in a “proven” guy it’s going to continue to be a chicken and egg thing. They are going to have to have someone light it up as a pocket passer *before* they have something to sell. And that’s a tricky proposition, but the Jack Coan show against Oklahoma State was encouraging that it’s a realistically possibility now that Kelly is gone.

the only thing that was consistent with BK at the helm and qb development was terrible. Never understood the allure to his qb coaching and i think we will definitely be better off at the position going forward. i feel tommy was micromanaged by BK and can now show his development of the position

He did a legit good job getting Tony Pike and Zach Colaros to play over their heads at Cincy; and has coasted off of that ever since .

I never understood the notion of BK as some quarterback guru. But would note that Kizer and Book were both three-star, "never gonna see the field" recruits who developed into NFL draft picks, so it was not uniformly terrible.

But lets face it, Cinn played absolutely no one until FL and FL deleted them.

They played 4 ranked teams in 2009. Big East was a BCS conference, albeit the weakest one. I think the Cincy years are a feather in his cap when it comes to QBs but he’s coasted off of that.

Clearly over ranked and weak teams. I recall their huge make or break game was against might WV. The first good team they played was FL which was like high school varsity playing the JV team.

Yeah Kizer I believe received a late ratings bump but even then was always considered a Top 250 type.

I’ve talked myself into every DC candidate we’ve heard assuming the right dynamic and responsibilities are assigned

Phil is just Everett Golson, but taller and whiter.

I think that is a disservice to Everett. I thought he threw the ball beatifully. Especially considering he didnt use the laces for half his time here. It was more the mental side of the game that he could never master.

Phil throwing the ball has never looked graceful.

I personally don't know what to believe about Phil, but did a few google searches and Mel Kiper had Phil as #6 QB for the 2022 draft before he elected to return. Pro Football Network came out with a mock draft for 2023 a few days ago and has Phil going at #8 overall. Phil's hand injury this past year kind of clouds the picture.

Yeah Everett is probably a more accurate passer, but they're similar in that they were/are both at their best AND worst when running around like their hair is on fire.

Making amazing plays while freestyling, but then missing a gimme or turning the ball over at bad times.

Loy just posted an update. No names for RB. Mostly the same names for DC. But. Prepare yourselves for the possibility of Al Golden. Supposedly he badly wants the job and is a better fit than most of us realize. Freeman et al want continuity not a rental and Golden may be in it for the long haul.

I remember reading that Kizer cost himself a higher rating b/c he wasn’t on the 7-on-7 circuit like the other top QBs b/c he preferred playing baseball in the summer. Exposure makes a huge difference at the QB position.

All names already being talked about, but he dedicated a lot of ink to Golden.

I think Golden would be an interesting hire because it gives you that “veteran” presence the staff does not currently have. Could be a large value add beyond just a position coach/coordinator perspective.

Someone needs to explain the Al Golden is a terrible D Coordinator story which is not to be confused with the easily understood Al Golden is a terrible head coach story.

Al Golden hasn't been a defensive coordinator in college since 2005.
