Maybe. I don't think Tressel is necessarily a "gotta get" type of guy. He's been coaching for awhile. While his resume is ok, there's nothing spectacular about it. The idea that he could coach LB's, is seasoned, and could provide some continuity is obviously intriguing. But at the same time, hiring Tressel also feels, to me, a little like Brian Kelly pre-2016 just hiring the convenient guy, and not necessarily the best guy.

Not directed at you. But everyone we’re not getting an established S tier defensive coordinator when our head coach is a defensive guy. Coaches want autonomy, and Marcus Freeman is going to be, and should be involved in the defense. Don’t let Mike Elston continuing to blitz in 2nd and 3rd quarter with a big lead when Spenders Sanders was taking deep drops in gun affect of your opinion of Freeman’s defensive IQ too much.

Hopefully we get someone who is an upcoming guy, great leader, but doesn’t have a giant resume yet, and thus is willing to work in collaboration with Marcus Freeman. Easier said than done but a Kirby Smart Dan Lanning situation would be ideal.

His special teams units are awesome but I don't think it's all about that - he is a dude on the recruiting side. This is likely a massive upgrade over Polian. Not saying Polian was bad recruiting, he wasn't. But there will be no comparison with Mason.

So who are among Freeman’s top candidates? Multiple sources tell FootballScoop that Iowa State defensive coordinator Jon Heacock, Auburn defensive coordinator Derek Mason, Tennessee defensive coordinator Tim Banks, current Jacksonville Jaguars safeties coach and former college defensive coordinator Chris Ash, and current Cincinnati Bengals linebackers coach Al Golden, the former Miami and Temple head coach are all under consideration and that Freeman also is holding some options close to the vest.

It's irrational but I would have a hard time getting past the stink of failure surrounding Chris Ash's Rutgers tenure. Those teams were a comical embarrassment and did literally nothing well.

Getting the WR coach from Bama would be a huge get not only on the recruiting trail but for the coaches. He knows the Mama standard and could bring that to ND

Just from glancing through his bio, Tim Banks is a very interesting candidate. He was the DC at Central Michigan under Butch Jones and followed him to Cincinnati where he was the co-DC for a couple of years. After that he was DC at Illinois, then co-DC at Penn State until this past season when he took the job at Tennessee.

Who’s the Bama coach? Looked up the coaching staff….there are hundreds of them. The fellow listed as wide receivers is coach is also Asst Coach of Offence (?). Doesn’t sound like a job you’d choose to leave.

None of those are homeruns in my book, but Heacock/Mason/Ash are all interesting. Mason ran a pro-style 3-4 at Stanford though and I don't think that meshes with our personnel.

Auburn ran this year essentially a 2-4-5 similar to what Pete K has run at Washington and Michigan ran this year formation wise

I would be a fan of Al Golden as DC... was solid at Temple and a good enough recruiter at Miami which really isn't as big of a concern on the defensive side of the ball. None of the names mentioned above really excite me though.

Golden caught my eye too. Much like HH for OL, I think this coach staff needs some seasoned names with expereince as well as leathered age. I've never taken him as a soft guy afraid of hard work. It is the type of move in his career that might lead him back to a decent HC job.
