Laurinaitis would be like video game amazing. Certainly won't lack for name recog or intensity.

As for Harry I just don't see him fitting the badass recruiter checkmark at this stage. If we are looking at giving it to Mendelson Or similar brining harry on as an analyst makes alot of sense. I don't know much about Frye but he might be a nice mix of established/young for the coaching staff.

He called MF his "best friend" in college, so I bet he comes around in some capacity.

The perfect scenario IMO would be MF establishing a Director of Player Development role on Offense and Defense. It's not an "on-field" coaching role, but they are involved in recruiting and basically mentor players in the program. I know Virginia Tech has them. It's perfect for a guy like Laurinaitis who isn't a coach, but could be a major asset.

I remember Frye’s name was heavy in the mix when Quinn was elevated to OL coach. I believe Frye was at BC at the time and thought highly of recruiting and coaching. He went to UCLA and maybe got a co-OC promotion. Seems like recruiting was just ok by weak sauce pac-12 standards but I have no ability to comment on his Xs and Os.

He had one 4 star OG in his recruiting since 2018 at UCLa and rest are 3 stars. His 4 star was their highest rated recruit but also looks like regardless of position they are a primarily 3 star program period. So cant tell much from 247 recruiting rankings.

My understanding of HH's no go standing with the university is purely based on what Lax has posted about his conduct during his tenure. It seems pretty cut and dry that it won't happen if that's all true. But 247 is reporting that he's a serious candidate and was even interviewed... So what's the disconnect? Water under the bridge now?

Others on the 247 board have phrased it this way but I'm inclined to agree - HH was a great developer of offensive lineman but not of the offensive line. The 2020 line functioned better than any other in the last 15 years which obviously includes the 2017 and 2018 years. When it came time to face good defensive units they got pushed around. Last year ND bullied Clemson and quite often won the trenches against Alabama.

I think the what HH “did” is something that time can heal as the players involved are long gone and most of the previous staff is gone.

If Hiestand is the guy, I hope he does more in recruiting. But another underlooked part was that guys who didn't play under him were never playing. I may be misremembering (and someone please correct me if so), but until Hiestand left, Eich was NEVER gonna play. As in Hainsey (NFL OC and always undersized at RT) was the heir to McGlinchey on the left side. New OL coach comes in and Eich became a 2nd round pick and legitimately good college LT. Would his OL perform better across the board with a team fully entrenched in Built By Balis? Perhaps. But I'm not sold that this is the slam dunk hire that others have touted. I don't wanna see another 2 man OL class (2015) and that should absolutely never have been followed up by a 3 man OL class in 2016. A disinterested outlook towards recruiting should not be welcome on staff, and especially not on OL.

HH had that beat you up verbally then hug you later old school style. It does not work for everybody. It did not work for Eich and there was another highly rated player that took it even worse which lead to both him and Harry being gone. Having said that I think it is certainly possible HH learned from that and I trust Reesus and MF to fully vet that before making a hire. Also there was that heavy rumor about Eich but later he was one of the ones seeing HH on the side for instruction so clearly a shades of gray situation.

Loy/Prister made it sound like Frye or Hiestand will be the hire. I’d imagine both would take it and it’s a matter of choosing at this point, unless OSU comes in over us for Frye.

I hope Harry is ready to recruit. I know he can coach, but can he identify with this generation? We will see

Didn't Harry hate recruiting? That's Freeman's point of emphasis for his staff but I guess if you're gonna overlook it for anyone I suppose it would be Hiestand.

ND OL recruits itself, it's like USC with WR or CBs. If Tommy wants Harry, I think it'd be helpful to have some extreme experience on the staff given how young we are.

I’m a little surprised but I figure that Rees knows exactly what he’s getting with Harry. If nothing else he’s got quite a track record with getting guys to the NFL - which may be more valuable in recruiting than Quinn’s aggressiveness.

I'd be surprised if HH was brought back. Freeman has said multiple times that he isnt looking for an old school type of coach.

He’s already been interviewed for the position. Was the first one per Prister.

Even if he didn’t like it, he still did it, his last recruiting class coinciding with a drop off this year is no coincidence

I think bringing in Harry again would be a horrible move. Maybe as a analyst but not as the OL coach. Give me Justin Frye. We need to get coaches who love recruiting not guys over 60 who should be retired.

Chip Long moved on to Georgia Tech. Does anyone know if there has been any talk about Chris Watt going with him?

In many ways, HH as a Sr Analyst / Mentor and Watt as O-Line coach would be pretty good.

Sorry - didn't see them... been in FB jail since last Sunday (until today) and banned from Twitter for 4 days (until today)....

No biggie. It is certainly interesting to consider Laurinaitis joining the staff in some capacity.

I usually go back a few pages when I look to post something from another site... just been quiet these past few or more days... just missed it... I like his dad was the Road Warrior Animal!

I am leaning Frye here. I think his experience as an OC/co will be beneficial on the sidelines while Tommy is in the booth.

Saban is 70. I'm not 100% in on HH at this point and he is no Saban, but HH is a proven success and would bring experience to a younger offensive staff.
