We have to win 9 games and be in the Top 14. We're 22 right now, so we need to move up 8 spots. Having Stanford be ranked #6 right now is huge. There will have to be a lot of breaks, but it is possible regardless of what people on here say. Not likely by any means, but definitely possible.

I'll try.

Houston needs to lose.
Okie St. Beat Oklahoma.
Have South Carolina beat Clemson. So Clemson drops farther but South Carolina will not be eligible for a BCS bowl since Alabama and LSU will take both SEC spots.
The loser of Penn St and Wisconsin will drop either way.
Ohio St beat Michigan.

Something like that, I am sure more needs to be done besides beating Stanford. But with the teams above losing should jump ND up further.

ND can go to the:

BCS NCG
Rose Bowl
Fiesta Bowl
Sugar Bowl
or
Orange Bowl

They will just need to buy tickets. Champs Bowl looks like a lock, win or lose Saturday.

Not going to happen because Stanford is going to lay the smackdown on us. So that will be 4 losses and Champs Sports or Sun Bowl.

South Carolina could go, but Arkansas would go first. And they can have 3 BCS teams if #1 and #2 are SEC teams.

couldnt we potentialy move up after the conference
championships?

The question is, do you really want to go?

Come on guys. We do not deserve a BCS bowl, and even if we went to one, we would get torched. I would much prefer getting a win in the Champs Sports Bowl than getting rocked in a BCS bowl that we don't deserve...again.

A conference can only send 2 teams from its conference to the BCS, so I would assume given the #1 and #2 are automatic. It would still be considered the two teams from one conference.

We will jump a few teams with a win and then some help from others it can definitely happen. If we get top 14 it definitely will because of $$$$$

Unless both #1 and #2 are from the same conference, which they are.

I guess I will take your word for it. Haven't found a source that explains what happens if two teams from one conference make the Championship. I just always heard two teams from one conference, that's it.

If the top teams win, Oklahoma St will jump Alabama anyways. For the fact that Oklahoma St will have beaten the #9 team in Oklahoma. Where as Alabama would have only beat #24 Auburn. Oklahoma St would also have the conference championship to impress even more.

If Bama wins out, they're not going to get moved down from #2. And at this point, it's pretty obvious that they're the second best team in the country. The only other team I would like to see in the BCS championship (assuming LSU wins out) was Oklahoma, but without Broyles, they don't stand a chance.

I side with phork on this,

I ultimately root for the sucess of ND, but on this topic, I just wonder what the fascination of the BCS is...

Let's say that, by some stretch of the imagination, we make it.

We end up matched up against Oklahoma, Alabama, Oregon, OK state.

Does anyone honestly think that we have a SHOT against these guys?

I'm not trying to be negative; it's just an objective fan's point of view on where this team is right now.

The BCS level is just a little high for us at this juncture.

Truth. Lucking into a BCS bowl against one of these teams would be horrible. ND would get demolished, and it would be the last thing recruits saw before signing day. Instead, let's get a solid win in the Champs Sports bowl.

Currently out of the 6 computer polls Oklahoma St is ranked 2nd in four of them and 3rd in the other two. Alabama is 3rd in four of them and 2nd in two. If Oklahoma St wins out they will more than likely jump Alabama. Winning their conference will also help. The Harris and Coaches Poll have them in 6th. Which is the only reason they are in 4th in the BCS. If LSU beats Arkansas and Oklahoma St beats Oklahoma they will jump in both of those polls.

I am not saying it is right, or another way is wrong. Just the way I think it will shake out in the end.

Are you sure those polls are the updated version? I have a hard time seeing them stay there after being upset by Iowa state.

Yeah here it is. Sorry if it is hard to read, didn't know another way to move it over here. But the bold part is the computer rankings.

1 LSU 1.0000 1 1 2875 1.0000 1 1475 1.0000 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1.000
2 Alabama .9491 3 2 2758 .9593 2 1413 .9580 3 3 3 3 3 2 2 .930
3 Arkansas .8985 6 3 2619 .9110 3 1349 .9146 4 4 5 6 4 4 4 .870
4 Oklahoma St .8408 2 6 2267 .7885 6 1156 .7837 2 2 2 2 2 3 3 .950
5 Virginia T .7842 8 5 2302 .8007 4 1242 .8420 7 7 10 7 9 18 7 .710
6 Stanford .7711 9 4 2371 .8247 5 1222 .8285 9 8 4 10 14 11 9 .660

The Big12 has no conference championship. OU OSU is the defacto championship game.

I was shocked myself. Why didn't OSU get totally dropped like a lead weight?

I got some time...so I'll give it a shot (although I agree with the majority that even with the win, it is highly unlikely we go bowling with the BCS). The following numbers are the game prediction strengths that the outcome will help ND on 1-10 scale with 1 being a sure thing the team will loose and help us, and 10 when hell freezes over the football Gods lend a hand.

I see our BCS hopes hanging on the results of 5 games.

#22 ND (needing to move up to #14)

GAME 1 #21 Nebraska (8-3) vs Iowa (7-4). Nebraska coming off getting blown out by scUM and Iowa winning @ Purdue who beat Ohio $t the week before. A real pick 'em game, 5.

#20 TCU bye week coming, followed by playing home to UNLV (2-8) who lost 59-7 to Wash St. Yikes, 9.

#19 Penn St (9-2) @ #16 Wisconsin (9-2) who is bouncing back with 3 wins after back to back heartbreakers to Mich St. and Ohio $t. Depending on the line I would put some serious cash on the Badgers in this one, 2

GAME 2 #18 Baylor (7-3) vs Texas Tech (5-6). Which Baylor team will show up? The one that just beat Oklahoma on a last second TD, or the one that beat a 2-9 Kansas team 31-30 in OT? Tech also on a 4 game loosing streak...6

GAME 3 #17 Clemson (9-2) @ #12 South Carolina (9-2). Clemson, losers of 2 of their last 3 with the lone win coming in come back fashion at home vs Wake Forest after trailing 14-28 in the 4th and needing a game winning FG as time expired, is clearly sliding. 3

GAME 4 #15 Michigan (9-2) vs Ohio St (6-5). scUM has won once in the past 10 years...here is to hoping that futility continues. 7

GAME 5 #14 Michigan St (9-2) @ Northwestern (6-5). NW is on a 4 game winning streak including their upset gem at #10 Nebraska at the time. Besides their loss to scUM (which they were winning until late in the 3rd) they have not lost any game by more then 10 points. 4

#13 Georgia (9-2) @ #23 Georgia Tech (8-3). GT has lost 3 of their last 5 and even with a win, I doubt it pushes Georgia behind us or even Wisconsin...but for the sake of recruiting I hope Paul Johnson options them to death. 7

So after all this, I believe even with TCU winning, which they should and may be the most likely win for teams ahead of us, our win vs the #6 team and overall strength of schedule will allow us to jump them. The Penn St and Wisc game does not matter as much because the winner, especially if Wiscky wins, has a good chance of stayin ahead of us. If NW pulls the upset, our head to head big win vs the Spartans will no doubt help put voters at easy if they slide us in a slot ahead of them. That said, our loss to Michigan may not hurt as much if they loose since it would be at home to a bad Ohio St team they should beat.

Conclusion: Wisconsin will probably stay ahead of us based on 1 less loss and higher preseason/season long rankings, but I have uncertainity on the brand new conference championship game they may be in vs Mich St. Do we leap them after one has to loose at the conclusion of that game? Either way I have a sneaking suspicion in some cruel way we end up at #15 even if we do everything we can and hit the lotto so there ya go.

Wow. I can't believe they're still ranked so high. Iowa State was only 5-4. Thanks for the link
