The NCAA is exploring a reduction in the number of scholarships programs can give out as part of a long-term look at reallocating various resources around the organization and at member schools.

The proposals are in a very early stage and stem from one of the four presidential working groups established by President Mark Emmert following his August Presidential Retreat. The groups are expected to recommend significant changes to the operation of Division I athletics to the NCAA Board of Directors to address the growing need for reform.

Following a six-hour meeting in late September, the Resource Allocation Working Group, chaired by Georgia President Michael Adams, agreed to consider a reduction in FBS football scholarships from the current number of 85 to 80 and a reduction in the number of FCS football scholarships from 63 to 60. The reductions would likely follow a move toward a full cost-of-attendance scholarship that is expected to be passed in early 2012. In addition to football, the group agreed to consider a reduction in the number of men's basketball scholarships from 13 to 12 and in women's basketball from 15 to 13.

The cuts are just a few of the controversal recommendations the working group is expected to pursue prior to their presentation to the Board of Directors at the NCAA Convention in January. According to a summary of the group's update, obtained by CBSSports.com, it was agreed upon to recommend eliminating all foreign travel, reduce mandatory out-of-season practice time and explore a reduction in competition (i.e. cutting the number of games for several sports).

Other presidential working groups are also examining financial costs, NCAA rules and student athlete-well being. The NCAA Legislative Council and Board of Directors will both meet next week in Indianapolis.

Frustrating. It's moments like these that make me wish for 4 super-conferences outside of the NCAA.

The foreign travel thing is total BS too.

Our lacrosse team played games in Japan, our football team is going to Ireland, many basketball teams go play abroad, etc.

What new TV dough?

Just saying that at a time when conferences are signing massive deals with networks they are going to turn around and try and deny 5 kids a scholarship because they need to "cut costs."

Keep in mind the NCAA doesn't have a hand in those contracts and those conferences don't control the vote in the NCAA.

Few colleges make money off their football programs. Many of the others want to cut costs and see trips abroad as an advantage for the wealthier programs.

A scholarship has zero effect on the NCAA, cost wise. It doesn't cost them anything...whether every school out there gives 1 of them or 10,000 of them.

Besides the people camping out in the streets of New York City at the moment, I can't think of a more useless confederation than the NCAA. I can't wait until the day schools pull out of it and make it a thing of the past.

Yeah, let's go back to the 30's and the 50's. Open rosters, few graduations, play for pay was the rule not the exception, play on Saturday for State U and on Sunday for local pro team.

Do you have a clue?

This type of move would actually lessen the effects of penalties levied against a school like U$C, unless of course the scholarship numbers they need to get down to get reduced by 5 as well. Some how I sense they will back into benefitting from this. They Suck.

Pulling out of the NCAA doesn't have to mean a return to wild west. When the super-conferences eventually form, all of the football powers will be interested in having a common set of reasonable rules which are actually enforceable. I fear that's our only hope of ever seeing CFB under a reasonable and enforceable regulatory structure.

I think it would make the margin for error a little smaller, making a mistake on a recruit would be a bigger issue with a reduction in schollys. I think it would make recruiting even more of a pressue packed situation.

Also, Pete the Cheat would not have burned that Scholly on Mitch Mustain, cuz we all know the only reason Pete the Cheat took Mustain is so he wouldnt go to ORE.
