I think inside the 5 we need packages for Minchey and/or Buchner. Third and fourth downs less than 2 yards should be automatic. Be methodical, physical, and do whatever it takes to convert. We cannot give any freebies to USC, nothing. I hope Freeman has a meeting with Denbrock and it begins with, "Mike, close the door please."

You can use Carr. They ran him in the 4th when we were up.

Again though go under center, have Washington as the blocking tight end, bring Raridon in as the full back and Love as the running back. That’s going to move some people or open some holes.

Carr showed her was capable of running the ball against Miami. What happened to that?

I was at the game so didn’t watch some aspects as normal but

- NC State really loaded the box. OL should be better but it seemed like it was 7 - 8 man boxes often

- Carr I think struggles at times (1H) with taking only the bigger plays against man. It does not feel like we have had many easy solutions to man coverage. It’s big play or incomplete often. In the 2H, much better on slants.
Broadcast booth stated multiple times that Doeren told them their first goal is to stop/contain ND’s running game. Doeren said if they couldn’t do that, they’d lose. After hearing how poor the NC St D was leading up to the game, I’m not surprised they went ”all in” on stopping the run.

Short yardage needs to have some under center plays. Ridiculous to be playing out of shotgun with 4 & inches. Just stupid and BS 4th down cute lame calls by denbrock.
I agree it seems obvious & is counter intuitive to be in shotgun when only inches are needed. I heard a coach explain it that being in shotgun gives the QB & RB a clear view of the best hole to take as well as getting momentum to hit said hole.

Regardless, in the words of Malachi Fields…”don’t overthink it”

We have to get the nickel position figured out. I really thought Golden was faster than he is. Looks like a safety trying to play man to man and just fully out of place. Right now until they force nickels to tackle you gotta put a guy in that can play man. Hopefully Smith can play this week.

Was he close at all to playing yesterday or his he going to be out for awhile?
No, he as went from questionable last week to being out this week. I think he’s had a history of nagging injuries so I wouldn’t expect him to be reliable the remainder of the season. It’s too bad, b/c when he’s in there; he’s effective.

I’ve always disliked, and never fully understood, running shotgun draws in obvious short-yardage run situations. But at least that’s a logical explanation and better than the blasted wildcat.

One of my favorite things about Freeman is his emphasis on making plays on special teams. Did it again yesterday, which brings up the question of why the refs stopped the game when we were about to go no huddle with TB. I was at the game so I didn’t get an explanation of what happened.

I think they gave some BS about needing to re-spot the ball. I would be ok if that crew never worked another game ever.

I was at the game so hard to tell from the stands, but the running game plan seemed pretty vanilla today.

It seemed like we didn’t run much, if at all, any pulling plays, counters, or fake jet actions. I think that had a lot to with tough running lanes today

Anyone notice anything along those lines?

I thought so. I felt a bit like they were trying to save some wrinkles for SC.

I got married yesterday, so I didn’t watch the game.

They seriously picked this flag up? I know it was a desperation throw by Carr, but c’mon lol.

That’s two terrible officiating jobs in a row now.

Worse calls against us occurred yesterday

Postgame Thoughts:
1. A tale of 2 halves, ND made adjustments and it showed in the 2nd half.
2. 2 WR's with 100 yards receiving, Pauling continues to come up with big catches.
3. Nice fake punt play with Buchner.
4. Carr & Love, another day in the office.
5. I didn't have a problem with the offensive play calling; have to keep some surprises or calls when opposing defenses don't expect it.
6. N.C. St. couldn't stop Traore.
7. Another great defensive game by ND & Ash....I mean Freeman.
8. I like the sample Freeman is showing with KVA & Faraimo on the field together.
9. Nice to see Hobbs get an interception to build his confidence.
10. Keep going 1-0; beat SC!

Go Irish!

Also gives fast safeties the opportunity to shoot around the tackle and trio up a RB not hitting the hole fast enough. Seen it too many times. Loves it when Mitchell Evans would take the QB sneak.

No problem with the 4th down calls? Maybe after we put up 36 but not when they happened one after the other.

Still haven’t seen anything on Ashton Craig. MF say anything about him?

While they did sell out against the run, that pic is somewhat deceiving in terms of what you are saying. The only reason why there are that many players close to the LOS is because of the formation. ND has nine players in this grouping.

It was still 8 in the box before Pauling went in motion. As with many/most other plays. This camera angle just provided the best example. Here is 8 in the box with slot to the wide side

or 8 here with nobody past 7 yards:

I listed to the NC State 247 postgame pod. To summarize: ND has pros everywhere, and NC State was outmanned at every single position on the field. To paraphrase the one guy - "Their middle linebacker Bowen was running stride for stride with our best offensive weapon Hollywood Smothers and broke up the pass. He's a lot bigger and stronger, but he's just as fast. That sums up what this game was."

This is refreshing from the BK era where sure we would win reliably against this tier of teams but they always sort of felt like the lower end of our peer group. Even with the game tight going into half the talent discrepancy popped off the screen. It felt more like we were playing with our food than a tight game between teams in the same tier.

When we’re clicking on both sides of the ball I think we have a legitimate claim as the best team in the country. (I’m not saying we should be ranked #1 which is a different thing) We got Freeman talking about violence and bloodshed again so you know the team is locked in and on a mission.

Always a reminder that perspective is everything.

The Bowen coverage on Hollywood is the biggest clenched cheeks to sigh of relief moment for ND fans. Something had think we got lucky with.

For NC State, that was the nail in the coffin. Their best player couldn't do anything against our linebacker.

I always find that interesting.

I am getting tired of having to discuss the referees week after week. It's becoming a tedious and annoying part of sports. I'm not sure what the answer is, but the last two weeks have been brutal.
What the ACC's doing with televising the review process has been wildly popular. It won't help when the officials still manage to screw up royally, but it's a step in the right direction.

I'm not a gambler, but if I was, I'd bet on ND to beat any opponent other than OSU on a neutral field as of today.

The College Station/Orange Bowl version of Freeman will be showing up for this game. Every time he mentions violence and blood he is 100% picturing Chad Bowden in his mind.
