I’d love it if the short-yardage issues were “Denbrock playing Madden and finding the cheese plays because he knows they’re gonna win” but it really just seems like he gets himself out of rhythm by overthinking it.

The offense is at its best between the 20’s when the defense has the whole field to defend, and has to show its intentions as to whether it’s gonna crowd the line to stop Love, or back up and give a favorable box for running. This is when Carr is hitting chunks or JD is getting chunks, because Carr is already recognizing the right “pick your poison” checks at the line.

I think Denbrock gets too cute trying to deal with short yardage and constricted field situations to answer the defense not having as much real estate to cover.

Stop it. Use four downs to get downhill, or go 5-wide and let CJ spin it wherever he likes his matchup. I actually don’t even mind the Wildcat, because at least it’s a red zone identity of some sort.

But a max-protect, one-route, play-action pass on 4th, with no emergency outlet option? Take that shit out of the playbook if the game isn’t already decided.

I could understand it somewhat if we were playing someone who we were outmanned against.

But we generally aren’t. Line the fuck up and be better than someone.

480 yards of offense

yall are calling out the OC

LOL. take a collective lap
Are you telling MFMF to take a lap? You could literally see him seething after that play on the cutaway.

It was a dumb playcall with Denbrock has a tendency to do multiple times a game—especially in short yardage.

It’s okay to admit that, lol.

I get Denbrock is going for the TD but the S wasn’t even lined up to stop the run. As if they knew the play. I don’t think ND was very patient with their run game. Denbrock and Carr getting greedy like they’re in a hurry. Grind out some drive with many runs. We can get 10+ yards regularly if Carr turns and hands the ball to Price ir Love. He can keep a few since it’s often wide open for him.

Yeahhh. I think MFMF needs to sometimes accept the FGs sometimes too.

I was ok going for it the play call wasn’t good. That’s why we have Love.

And on the first one Carr has to learn to get rid of it and not take the sack.

But I agree with you 3 points can be the difference.

Great game to watch In person.

The crowd seemed into the game.

The crowd let the Refs know they sucked multiple times.

Pauling was beating his dude off the line almost every time.

Glad to have Burnette back.

The defense looked good today. Had a few times they were looking at each other like they were confused.

The LB’s seem slow to get to the outside to cover the running back in the flat.

Overall I thought we got pretty steady pressure on the QB.

Fun game with the family and great weather.

Tinkering in a one score game is not acceptable. He should've learned his lesson last year with Northern Illinois. That's disrespectful to the game and how hard it is to win to tinker with things instead do what is the right thing and get your two yards and move the sticks and try the stupid shit you want to "tinker"with on first down

ND defense has given up 34 points in 14 quarters since the start of the 2nd half vs Purdue. 2.42 points per quarter. Are we back???

Our sweet baby boy CJ. He is so so good. The TD pass to KK Smith where he diagnosed the pressure pre-snap and got Raridon and Price into the proper pass-pro. Elite stuff

Just keep winning

Would’ve liked to have seen the wildcat on a couple of those 4th downs but other than that a workmanlike grinding win. I’ll take it every time.

Should have stated:

Very pleased overall. Route concepts between the 20’s are obviously awesome, and even the redzone double-post where Carr hit KK, but could’ve also hit the outside receiver for a TD the exact same way, was beautiful.

This offense is bordering on elite. Not quite there yet… my criticism of Denbrock’s issues finding a short-yardage, goal-to-go identity are rooted in frustrations about getting too cute, when you’re too talented on offense to NOT dedicate yourself to something.

Apparently you can’t watch it in like half the US either
That's ridiculous. The thing that really drives me nuts is not being able to get espn in canada. Even though they own 20% of tsn (our major sports network) in canada. I just wanna watch a lot of college football ffs.

I was at the game so didn’t watch some aspects as normal but

- NC State really loaded the box. OL should be better but it seemed like it was 7 - 8 man boxes often

- Carr I think struggles at times (1H) with taking only the bigger plays against man. It does not feel like we have had many easy solutions to man coverage. It’s big play or incomplete often. In the 2H, much better on slants.

This was the biggest critique of him during camp, right? He constantly wants to hit the big play, but the receivers aren't quite at the level yet where they will make the opposing team pay for playing man.

If I'm a portal WR I'm salivating to come to ND because if I can get separation against man CJ will absolutely feast getting the ball to me downfield.

FWIW I feel like Denbrock could scheme open more. At times it feels like ND is in practice mode on offense. When I say we don’t have very man easy solutions, I think there is an aspect of almost intentionally not emptying the clip schematically.

I agree, but I still don't think we have anyone that scares you 1 on 1 over the top.

We don't have an elite talent at WR but Fields is big with good hands, Pauling runs really good routes, and Faison is great in space. If, say, KK could turn into a deep threat? Watch out.

Looked on TV like Fields was having difficulty getting separation today. Was that the case in person or balls delivered late or off target?

Yeah, the offense did well overall, but there is room for improvement. This is actually very promising, because the offense is already really good, but it could be truly elite. It's still good enough to make a deep run if things break the right way, but first, USC.
