NBC TV Timeouts

I was listening to the Aug 18 Irish Illustrated podcast and the commentators said they would ask whether somebody at ND was working with NBC to lessen the impact of TV timeouts on the hurry-up aspect of the spread. Anybody hear whether they got an answer? It would totally defeat the purpose of trying to tire out the defense if NBC insists on having long games.

The NBC timeouts have been the drive killers in the past. God knows how many times ND was on a roll and had to take a TV timeout on;y to kill the drive.

Never been a big fan of them stopping the game, think they should do it a little less often myself. But they have to make money somehow I guess.

Personally, I think the best solution is after each ND scoring drive to run commercials longer than normal as opposed to interrupting drives.

That approach also provides an additional benefit of giving our defense more time to rest.

Of course, if NBC uses the same logic as they do with "talent" in the booth, they'll deem that approach to airing commercials as unfair.

With the frequency ND fans expect Kelly's Offense to score, if commericals are only shown after ND scores, NBC will be running commericals early and often.

That would be OK with me. I would hope for six or seven hour games.

.

Plus it gives me ample time to take a leak. I hate when I have a "flow" and I come back and 3 or 4 plays have been run.

Isn't this how NBC has always done it?

I don't think they put in any more TV timeouts during drives than any other NCAA/NFL game...it's the long breaks in between scores that are brutal.

Touchdown....extra point.

Commercial.

Kickoff.

Commercial.

I'd bet that's where 80% of the commercial time comes from.

Can you explain further? Because NBC doesn't call timeouts in the middle of drives. Drive killers are screens that don't work, or offensive linemen that don't block. Notre Dame never has to call a timeout; they choose to. NBC doesn't stop the action in the middle of a drive...it happens before and after drives.

Can't blame NBC for stalling our drives...the only thing I can think of is injury timeouts, and every station does that.

Blame NBC for 4 hour games, but don't blame them for killing our drives.

From the Presser today:

ND has talked to NBC about tempo of spread offense

BK didn't want to get into specifics on discussions with NBC (about the tv timeouts)

"So...here's Ruffer with the opening kickoff...and it's returned for the touchdown!"

*timeout*

"Here's the kick taken by...Riddick...Riddick up to the 25 and brought down at the 28!"

*timeout*

(Three minutes and 10 plays later) Touchdown.

*timeout*

So far in this scenario, there's approximately 10 minutes of commercial and...3:30 of game time. Pooey.

Or in the NFL, where it goes:

End of quarter

*Beer commercials*

1-yard touchdown run, PAT

*Beer commercials*

Kickoff

*Beer commercials*

So that's about 10 minutes of commercial and 30 seconds of game time.

Yup...I like your idea...and your analogy. Can't be seen as biased on the "Notre Dame Saturday" Broadcast...makes you wonder if NBC and ND make money sometimes in spite of themselves...

NBC adjusts ad breaks to Notre Dame's no-huddle offense - USATODAY.com

Kelly Whiteside USAToday

...

When Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly ran his no-huddle spread offense at Cincinnati last year, the average scoring drive took 2:19. This season, Kelly would like the Irish to work just as fast. So what does this mean for NBC Sports which will televise Notre Dame's eight home games?

"We've talked to NBC about the way we like to play the game versus maybe how it was played in the past," Kelly said Tuesday. "There's certainly a need for us to address it and I think we're working with NBC to make certain that they get what they need from an advertising standpoint." Kelly said a middle ground can be reached.

"I'm very confident that we're going to be able to do the things we want to do in terms of pushing the tempo without having to go to a commercial break," Kelly said.

For this season's Notre Dame game telecasts, NBC will switch to the NFL TV model of five shorter commercial breaks per quarter rather than four longer commercial breaks.

The total amount of advertising time will be the same. But the shorter breaks will run about 1 minute, 45 seconds this season compared to 2:30 last season.

...

Last year, the Bearcats had the lowest time of possession in major college football at 25:46, including a game in which they had the ball for just 16:18 in a 28-20 victory against Fresno State. Last season the Bearcats played four games in under three hours and their average game was 3:14. The average length for a Notre Dame game last year was 3:25, according to NCAA, and 3:27 for home games.

I'm gonna have to do some Longo conditioning between now and Sept 4th to get my self in shape for these hurry up commericals.

Last year: 2 minutes 30 seconds/timeout or 150 seconds.

This year 1 minute, 45 seconds/timeout or 105 seconds.

45 seconds less to:
Turn TV audio on, run to bathroom, pee, run back through den to kitchen, outside to grill, rotate brats, back to kitchen, open fridge, get new Guinness, run back to den, jump in chair, type message in IE GameDay thread to ShaqEvansisgod that "your next 'worse player in ND history post will be your last for the next 24 hours", turn audio of Tom Hammond off.

1 minute, 45 seconds. 105 seconds.

Too short to draw a Guinness from the tap. That takes 119.53 seconds. (I"m a Certified Guinness Perfect Pourer). Canned Draught Guinness must be pored into an appropriate glass in one smooth move. Still have to wait for head before rushing back to den. Too long. Have to get bottled Draught Guinness which can be drunk directly from bottle. Cooler in den would help but keeping Guinness at 42.8 degrees F would be tricky. May have to purchase small frig for den. Now if I could pee while rotating the brats ... Need to see urologist next week for prostate tweek and ban ShaqEvansisgod before the game starts.

Ya gotta adapt to the game plan!

This is an amazing post...I mean the precision in which you work is mind boggling... I really enjoyed this one.

New NBC TV Break Details

New NBC TV Break Details

NBC to use five shorter breaks to accommodate Notre Dame's plans for offense - ESPN

This new agreement between ND and NBC will have 5 TV Breaks per quarter opposed to the 4 TV Breaks usually... But these commercials will be shorter.

This new agreement should help out Kelly's offense. I much rather watch short commercials than long ones anyway.

September 4th, Here We Come!

It's funny to see the ND haters comment on this (on other sites, obviously)....claims or more cheating by ND, with NBC helping them to cheat, etc.

Honestly, it's funny more than aggravating. Don't think many of them have been to a game in ND stadium, otherwise they'd be well familiar with the frustration that comes with ORANGE ARMS walking out onto the field for what seems like an eternity....only to repeat it for what must be close to 20 times a game.

I, myself applaud Kelly or whoever initiated this topic with NBC.

NBC has never interrupted a drive with a *TV timeout* ...

Really? I assume you're either joking or from a parallel universe (if so, welcome to our reality), because I've yet to attend a game where at least 3 TV timesouts haven't occurred to disrupt the rhythm of the game.

Name a time. Just one. One time where a drive was interrupted by an NBC timeout. Rocket was talking about interrupting a drive. People are talking as if NBC calls for a timeout after a first down or something ridiculous like that. I've NEVER seen that happen. NBC has never called for a timeout in the middle of a drive. They might interrupt the flow of the game with their long commercial breaks, but those commercial breaks happen at breaks in the action, NOT IN THE MIDDLE OF DRIVES, which is what rocket31 was saying.
