The whole NBA lockout was a joke. It was all a marketing campaign created by David Stern to extend the agreements with the players. It was just to generate a bigger fan base and bring in more revenue so that TV games will be more televised, more jerseys will sell and tickets will go quicker than they ever will before. Following after the NFL's footsteps, the NBA is just a follower. No respectable leadership whatsoever. Its all a business and a game to see who can make the most. Watch, next year the NHL will do the same thing. Its all for the fan base= money. Why do you think David Stern wanted to start the season on Christmas day? Merry xmas to all the fans who have been waiting for the Lebron and Miami show....your NBA season has now arrived.

I don't think it helps them. If anything the lock out drove away the people who aren't diehard nba watchers. If they want a fan base go back to playing basketball.

I think it was pretty clear all along that the owners wanted to win and win big, and they didn't care if they had to sacrifice a season to do so. Stern was really one very few on that side that actually wanted a deal, and I actually commend him for doing so before more damage was done. The reason the Christmas day games were such a make or break target was twofold: they are the leagues most visible and thus marquee games in the regular season, and because the date of such games would allow for a reasonable condensed schedule following it.

Your other points are silly as well, especially the NHL one. No one knows better than the NHL what a lockout can do to a sport. They are finally recovering now as a league (because of such a great product and the damage the nba did) from their own lockout which tremoudosly hurt the sport. Why do you think the nfl pulled together a deal so fast once games were approaching, and why the MLB got a deal done in basically 2 weeks this offseason (incredible, especially considering it includes hgh testing). All these commissioners know that during a time when more and more people are electing to stay home and watch games on hd tvs than paying crazy ticket prices that they can ill afford to turn off the loyal fan base and season ticket holders that they do have.

This is asinine.

The NBA had, and still has, a flawed business model and thus has very legitimate negotiating concerns with the players. They were very close to going the route of the NHL, and indeed the comparison is much closer to the NHL than the NFL.

Do you really think David Stern got word of the NFL labor disputer and conjured this thing up? WTF?

Ironman has it right. NBA has more casual fans than anything. Way more people prefer college ball to NBA and this just reinforced that stance.

One counterpoint though, all of the players going abroad to play will increase international exposure and that is where the NBA seems to have really grown the pie in the last decade or two.

100% disagree. The Nba has it's share of clowns, as most sports do. But as a whole, the quality of the game is actually going back up, not down. This past years playoffs were one of the best in a long time.

That's one game two years ago. How about this year's NBA finals? How about any series the Grizzlies were in? Ditto for the Thunder. Even your Bulls were great to watch, and will be a force to be reckoned with this year, especially if they grab a SG like expected. The only series that really was disappointing was my Knicks series, but even then the first 2 games were extremely competitive with good quality.

Agree last year's playoffs were some of the best series in awhile. If the Bulls can somehow get J-Rich to take a mid-level exception, they could be an even bigger force to be reckoned with.

I have a bad feeling this is the year Bron finally "gets it" though, and becomes a cold-blooded assassin like he always should have been. If that happens, God help us all.

I did not watch any of the games you are talking about, or even the highlights. I did not even check the scores or really care. In June I am on to baseball season. Basketball ends with March Madness (early April really) in my book. If the NBA playoffs started at the tail end of the NCAA tourney it might have a chance to draw in someone like me. I mean really, April and May are pretty dead sports wise for me (since hockey and Nascar don't count as sports in my book).

Part of that is from going to a few NBA games a few years ago. They were corporate tickets and I was happy I didn't pay to go to that circus. So freaking loud you can't even think.

Now if the league were loaded with Wade's and Melo's I might take notice since I would feel like I watched them grow up in college. And if they actually played the game rather than just one-on-one muscle it into the post crap. Shaq has committed nothing but offensive fouls his entire career and may have two called against him ever. Basketball is not suppose to be a contact sport.

Well it is a good thing Shaq is retired then :geeza2: Do yourself a favor and watch Rose from the Bulls play, watch Durant from the Thunder play, watch Chris Paul play (wherever he goes), watch Miami be a juggernaut this year, watch the Grizzlies continue to be a scrappy group of overachievers, watch the Clippers build a great young core around Blake Griffin, Eric Gordon and hopefully Deandre Jordan. I'm very excited for this year, and honestly think that 66 is a better amount of games then 82 (too many IMO).

I dont watch the NBA anymore or give 2 shyts about it because the players dont play like any one game matters most the time. 82 games is way too many IMO. If a 66 game season makes a difference in how the game is played in the NBA then i'll be a fan again. But until then... every game is just one long boring gatorade commercial with 200 takes...

the NBA is a joke...cant stand it. to me its a bunch of millionaires playing pick up games, no one plays defense, way too many games.
i LOVE college hoops, but cannot even watch an NBA game--its like watching two different sports.

Guys, I'm a huge NCAA fan (and basketball in general), but some of the NBA bashing is unwarranted. A big reason for the perceived "1 on 1, pick-up game, and no defense" is because of the 24 second shot clock. By the time the ball gets to the frontcourt and the desire to not jack up a hurried shot with 1,2 seconds remaining on the shot clock only leaves about 16-17 seconds to run an offense or play. There's not a ton of stuff that can be run in that amount of time at ANY level. And if the shot clock were lengthened, well then people would complain that games are too low-scoring and there isn't enough offense. Also take into account that NBA players are physically so much bigger than at any other level, and it's hard to get much spacing when you're 5 players are 6'3, 6'7, 6'8, 6,'10, and 7'0 all with long arms.

I think there are problems with the NBA and I too prefer the college game to the pro game, but it doesn't mean these guys still are not the very best in the world and that the vast majority of college players would look like total fools on an NBA court.

I'm not contending guys don't play defense because of the shot clock. My contention is that the offense isn't as pretty and pleasurable to watch because of the shorter shot clock.

There's a reason I don't get into women's basketball, division 2, 3, and NAIA basketball-- it's all because I know there are much, much better players out there that I can watch and appreciate. If the NBA has the best players out there, then I want to watch them play among and against each other.

I think just like any other sport, some of the best moments happen throughout the game, not just the final 12 minutes. In any contest that's close, obviously the final few minutes get the juices flowing and the uncertainty of who will prevail makes for great viewing. I simply choose to watch the moments leading up to that as well.
