The One Foot Down guys put it pretty well in a recent podcast: Penn State has been getting the gimme NY6 games that ND should have had the past 8 years or so and have been able to build their program based upon that. Couple that with Franklin being smarmy and another version of BK, plus regularly killing in areas like the DMV where we have been begging ND to get serious and yeah there will be some pent up frustration. That doesn't even touch the 2024 season/post-season.

I knew there were a few Pennsylvania guys on this site who hated Penn State due to daily exposure, but I did not know that there was this much built in angst about them in the 2025 fanbase. We're applauding every misfortune like they're Michigan all of the sudden.
Their fan base is miserable to listen to. Especially after Sandusky. One of my best friends was breaking down the expose/report that came out like it was the Warren Commission, trying to convince me that it was all a conspiracy. I love me a good conspiracy but even I had my doubts lol

I was ambivalent about them until moving to Central PA. The Penn State fans that I knew growing up didn't hate ND. But, out here it's virulent hatred towards them.

Huhn has been committed to PSU for over a year fwiw, Falzone was fully aware that he was the second QB when he originally chose PSU.

You're right, that's my bad. Thought I read somewhere that the Huhn commitment made this an issue, but it must have been more along the lines of "they'll be fine because they've got another QB in the class." Mea culpa!

For a lot of NEPA-born Irish fans like me, particularly in Scranton proper, they really are like Michigan to us. Deep-seated. There are lots of reasons, but, personally, I’ve never encountered a more delusional fan base.

Didn't really care much about them prior to the Sandusky cover up, might have actually respected them before that. The whole thing was pretty damn sick, and then for the NCAA to rescind the punishments and basically give them a slap on the wrist? Heinous. Made it even worse when a few years later we lost all those wins for self reporting a few players cheating on some papers while Ped State got all their wins back for covering up a sexual predator! The logic completely escapes me. Their program is trash, right there with Michigan in my book. I just hate on Michigan more because I see douchey Wolverines all the time in Ohio.

That’s because you moved to an area in PA that really dislikes Catholics… even if I do love the Lancaster area.

I hate Pedo State because of the scandal and James Franklin and their trashy fans at the Big 10 championship this year.

While it's great to see PSU bleeding recruits, the Falzone news was expected when Troy Huhn, another QB, committed earlier this week.

Still...love to see it.
Huhn has been committed to PSU for a long time. Falzone was the 2nd QB in the class. I was kinda shocked when they took his verbal to bring in a 2nd QB.

Sorry, didn’t mean to pile on. Just now got caught up with posts. My B.

I grew up in the shadows of Beaver Stadium and have a ton of family/friends that are alumni and die hard PSU fans. They hate the fact that ND is independent and “doesn't play anyone.”

The fans I know though don’t hate ND like they hate OSU and Michigan though. I have a daily reminder to all my students that the Irish are king in my classroom with my “Play Like A Champion today” poster hanging above my desk hehe.

Do you make the students tap the sign before a test?

Haha no, but I should. I usually just crack a joke about if they didn’t study, then they should have at least lit a candle at the grotto. That leads to some blank stares, then I pause and say “take your time, focus, and may God have mercy on your souls, good luck.” Haha

I’m not sure they could have. Sure they have a large following but they don’t have the same nationwide reach as ND and JoePa was trying to get them in a conference earlier than 93. Being independent is very difficult and only a few programs can realistically do it.

I want to say BYU was the last team to leave a conference and think they would be better off Independent, then they turned around and rejoined one 10 years later. I don't know if they thought they could be the Mormon version of Notre Dame or what, but it was short lived. Always thought that was a weird move for them during the previous conference realignment talks. I guess UConn technically left the American to rejoin the Big East, also becoming an Independent in football, but that seemed to have more to do with a disagreement over TV revenue or something.

You may be right. But I think back then, they and others could have continued. I think the biggest problem was when the Big East started sponsoring football.

But imagine PSU, ND, and even just one of Miami, FSU, Louisville, BC, and PITT all remained through the 90s. I think a team could have survived then into today. Again, maybe not though.

I do bet that they thought this
