You gotta be shittin' me. I think on ABC News last night there was a study that only 13% of high school seniors are proficient in history, and more pointedly, in our founding documents and the operation of Ameircan government. It's a travesty and it kills me being a historian.

Both pathetic and hilarious at the same time. He didn't even know who Thomas Jefferson was. I would absolutely love to know what his GPA is. My favorite quote ever for describing the SEC came from an LSU swimmer that transferred to ND. Asked why he transferred he said it was because he got an A in a class... when we gave him a quizzical look he said "I didn't even know I was signed up for that class."

And he was a freaking swimmer. Can you imagine what football players get away with?

I heard spelling wasn't up on that list either. But I digress. The sad thing of it all is that it plays right into the politician's hands of having "sheeple" as their electors. They are willing to buy into paranoia, real or imagined.

George Santayana was right. Truthfully, though, what can we expect when our schools are too busy trying to make students feel good about themselves to requre them to really learn history, civics, or geography.

Name that Jefferson ...

Name that Jefferson ...

Baton Rouge Police may do just that. On a felony warrant.

Report: Jordan Jefferson to be arrested on Monday - CBSSports.com

Tom Fornelli, CBSsports.com
8/21/11

On Friday we reported that LSU quarterback Jordan Jefferson had been involved in some kind of bar fight with teammates on Thursday night, though at the time we didn't know any details of the scuffle, or what exactly happened. Well, while the details of the fight are still unknown for the most part, there's one report that doesn't bode well for Jefferson or his teammates.

According to a report in The Times-Picayune, Jefferson will be one of four LSU Tigers to be arrested on Monday.

The report says that Jefferson and his teammates will face battery charges. Specifically, Jefferson and offensive tackle Chris Davenport will be charged with second degree battery. Defensive tackle Josh Downs, a starter, and wide receiver Jarvis Landry will be facing a simple battery charge. Simple battery is just throwing a punch or slapping somebody, and it's a misdemeanor.

That's not the case with second degree battery, which is a felony charge. It's a charge that is usually reserved for instances in which the victim suffers some kind of injury like a broken bone or needs to be hospitalized. According to the Baton Rouge police, four people had to check into the hospital to be treated for injuries after the fight.

The Times-Picayune report has been disputed -- to an extent -- by a Sunday Baton Rouge Advocate story, which states Jefferson, Davenport, Downs, and Landry will be reporting to BRPD for an interview at 9 a.m. Monday. BRPD officer Donald Stone did not confirm that the interview would result in arrests, saying it was still "early in the investigation," but did not rule them out. He did say that "one individual associated with the fight likely would be booked" on second-degree battery charges, but delined to say who.

The police also said that there were between 15 and 20 members of the LSU football team involved in the fight, but by the time police arrived, most were gone.

If Jefferson and his teammates are indeed arrested on Monday odds are that they will not be available for LSU's season opening game against Oregon.

A "disappointed and mad" Les Miles spoke with reporters Saturday, apologizing for his players' actions and vowing it would not happen again. Both Miles and LSU athletic director Joe Alleva suggested that in addition to internal discipline, further disciplinary actions would be taken once law enforcement completed their investigations. Miles did not rule out suspensions for multiple players in addition to Jefferson.

"[Senior starting center] T-Bob [Hebert] was [present] too, and there were a bunch of other guys," Miles said. "This was a team violation, not just a guy."

UPDATE:
According to Baton Rouge Police spokesman that interviewed is being rescheduled as the LSU "Fighting Four" have retained counsel.
===========================================

I'm curious how the negotiations are going between Miles and Oregon's Kelly over the timing of "team" punishment before their season opener. Oregon has already suspended CB Cliff Harris but QB Darron Thomas who was asleep in a car for the third time when a teammate was arrested for speed/weed (see Masoli) or a crash (see Eddie Pleasant) once again wore teflon. I can see the conversation going something like this:

"No Les, I'm not going to sit my QB if your's can't play. The cops didn't arrest him nor the two guys for weed. I'd don't care if you heard they all admitted they smoked it. If the cops don't convict, they don't sit."
"Chip, you don't understand, my guys are subject to the Napoleonic Code down here. It's tough, think "Chateu d'if" think "Guillotine" plus I've got a SEC schedule to play. You don't have to play Alabama and Northwestern State."
"Les, how long have you been a coach? I mean really, where did the police chief and judge go to school? Don't they have skyboxes? Ya know there's always a change of venue to New Orleans."
"But Chip, if we did something together if might look good to the NCAA, remember we both hired the same consultant."
"I've got to run Les, I have to watch the equipment manager take the wings off the Smokeless Four's unis. AND, I have to go help my defensive coordinator count the steps. We're not letting them run in their new Superfly III's. Then, I have to call Mr. Knight and explain. If you think Napoleonic Code is tough ... . See you on the 3rd Les, bye."

Report: Witnesses say Jordan Jefferson did alleged kick in bar fight - NCAA Football - Sporting News

Staff Report
8/21/11

Multiple witnesses said LSU quarterback Jordan Jefferson did an alleged “soccer kick” during a bar fight involving himself and three of his teammates on Friday morning, according to WAFB-TV in Baton Rouge.

Jefferson, offensive tackle Chris Davenport, linebacker Josh Johns and wide receiver Jarvis Landry were the four players identified as suspects by the Baton Rogue Police Department. It was reported that one player kicked a victim in the head and that has been confirmed by BRPD spokesperson Sgt. Donald Stone..

Overall, four people, none of them LSU players, were treated and released with injuries from the bar fight. Three people suffered minor injuries, while a fourth person suffered a more serious injury that could result in a felony charge of second-degree battery, according to Stone. Police have interviewed all four people who were injured.

Police were hoping to interview the four LSU players on Monday, but the players hired an attorney, Nathan Fisher, on Sunday and the scheduled meeting with BRPD is postponed for now. Fisher asked for a 24-hour postponement so he could meet with the players and get an understanding of the incident.

Les Miles said that he would let the legal events play out and then take appropriate action.
Of course, in the SEC that means they may loose one or perhaps two pay checks.

Police settle on possible charges for LSU players

Police settle on possible charges for LSU players

Police settle on possible charges for LSU players - CBSSports.com

August 22, 2011 11:29 pm
by Tom Fornelli CBSSports.com

While we're all still waiting to find out more about what took place in a bar fight on Thursday night in Baton Rouge that reportedly involved a number of LSU players, including quarterback Jordan Jefferson, word leaked on Monday night that the police had settled on possible charges for four LSU players.

"Our investigation has led us to believe that both simple battery and second degree battery will be the appropriate charge when the case is concluded," police spokesman Don Stone said late Monday.

Now what Don Stone didn't say is that four LSU players will definitely be arrested, though if the police have determined what possible charges they'll be filing against the players, you have to think they plan on making the arrests. As I said in my post on this over the weekend, a simple battery charge is a misdemeanor. The second degree battery charge is a felony.
The initial word was that Jefferson and offensive lineman Chris Davenport would be charged with second degree battery, while starting defensive tackle Josh Downs and wide receiver Jarvis Landry would be charged with simple battery.

Again, none of these four players has been charged with anything yet, but considering the report over the weekend and officer Stone's words on Monday night, it seems as if it's only a matter of time before those charges are filed.

If the witnesses are bona fide, I'd expect a plea bargain for lesser charges.

I think he was nervous and was thinking George Washington when he saw the picture of Thomas. George was the first name that popped into his head.
