I'm moving back to Indiana this fall to go to grad school at IUPUI. Was wondering if anyone had advice on: where to live, where to watch ND games, where the best spots to go out on the town are, etc.

I lived in Sellersburg, IN for about 10 years before I moved to Florida, but Indy is all new to me. My dad use to take me to Pacers games every now and then, but really don't know much about the city.

Any advice/comments/warnings/whatever is welcome.

Pacer, Colts and Indians games are always a blast. Night life you have many options, depends what youre looking for. Stay away from Talbott Street...everything else is all good.

Living downtown would make sense if going to IUPUI.

Watching ND games I can't help. Those Saturdays are reserved for my recliner.

Been here 2 years now, and the only real complaint I have is the food scene. It sucks IMHO. Every restaurant is a chain, and it is next to impossible to find unique fare.

Other than that, the nightlife is decent. Broad Ripple and Downtown have a lot of bars and can be fun. There are also a few good breweries in the area. This actually makes me think of another complaint: Lack of a light rail or some form of public transportation for drunks.

If Mother Nature gives us a break, the Monon Trail is one of the aspects of the city I find pretty neat, along with Geist Lake.

As far as living goes, I like the Northside. Downtown has some cool, hip areas, but obviously you will be paying more.

I'm not sold on Indy just yet, but so far have enjoyed my stay. There are natives here that are far more informative on this subject than me, so take my advice with a grain of salt.

Welcome back!

I agree with 2155, downtown would be best for commuting. There are a lot of newer apartments right around iupui campus that would be a good option too. If you don't care about a commute as much, Avon, Painfield, and Brownsburg are some good west side suburbs that would be an option too.

When we meet up to watch the Rice game, I'll give you a tutorial on the restaurants to go to. Just don't bail on me at the last minute this time ;)

Haha deal. I've been getting a constant supply of ZD and Gumballhead I can use as a peace offering. Have a few people hoarding cases for me every month.

*Back on topic, the best brewery in the world is only a few hours north of Indy!!!

In my personal opinion this is what seperates other larger cities from Indy, public transport system. Being born and raised in Indy in addition to experiecing many other cities (in Atl as I type this) some kind of subway system is needed...especially for those that like to tip a few back. But getting from place to place downtown is all in walking distance.

If you haven't been to Indy in the last 10 years you'll be surprised. There's plenty of sports all the time. NDBoiler is right. The area around IUPUI has exploded and there are a lot of apartments in that are and in downtown. I live on the far SE side and like it a lot. If you don't like traffic, stay away from the north side, especially around Castleton, Fishers and Carmel. It's always bad. Even though Indy doesn't have light rail, they nice thing is as large as it is, you can get from one end to the other in about 30-35 minutes given all the highways.

O'Garas in Beech Grove is an Irish bar for games. I'm either at the game or watching at home so I can't give you other ideas.

Thanks for the info guys.

I've been looking into an apartment called "The Block" it is right downtown near the capital. If I lived there I would probably be looking to use public transportation to get to class.

Lived in Indy 27 years. Check out the neighborhood around Holy Rosary Church (McCarty and S. East Streets). Walking distance to downtown and close to Fountain Square. Very cool place to live in June during the Italian Festival. Used to be the "Italian" parish. Still some there, but the yuppies are increasing. Rentals (houses) and apartments/lofts/condos are reasonable. The neighborhood pub (Dugout) is a hole in the wall, but cool atmosphere if you like a place where everyone knows your name.....

Public transportation here is terrible but the city is driveable compared to most. For you guys wanting to drink and get around, check out Uber and Lyft. Two great apps providing rides for very reasonable rates and cheaper than cabs. As far as nightlife, I'd add Mass Ave to the list. Most of the places are decent and the crowd is mostly young professionals and some places have decent food. For living, also check out Riley Towers and Van Rooy Properties. Van Rooy runs a few places (Continental Towers and Blacherne to name a few). I lived in Blacherne last year and I loved it $800-$900/month for a 1BR downtown. Nice building and walkable to downtown and Mass Ave. Also has garage parking and a 5 min drive to campus.

Also quite a few apartment complexes on or near the canal but they tend to be a bit pricier. Stadium Lofts on 16th street is a new apt complex that looks pretty cool. Turned the old minor league stadium into an apartment complex.

Look up stadium Lofts, i have a friend who lives in those. Basically what they did was turn Busch stadium (old minor league ball park) into apartments. I highly recommend these if you want to live near downtown and close to IUPUI's campus. Direct message me if you have any other questions. I've lived in indy on and off my entire life

Hahaha I lived on talbott street for a year, me and 3 buddies rented a house. Hated every second of it. Lets just say i didn't realize how incredibly gay it was. And i don't mean that in a offensive way

This right here is like a HS reunion for me. A lot of fun, good food and cold beer.

I'm a northsider through and through.

Fishers, Carmel...can't go wrong. I live less than 10 minutes away from Klipsh music center. Great concerts roll through there.

I concur with the above post that Indy's breweries are a good time. Great beer, fun environments. The Indy Brew Bus is fantastic.

Parts of Broad Ripple are ok. Depends on your age, I guess. I feel as if I've outgrown the majority of what goes down around those blocks. #oldmanproblems

The food: I stick to the steak houses. Chain restaurants don't bother me as long as the food is great. Flemmings, Eddie Merlot, St. Elmo, and Harry & Izzy are a favorite of mine. If you're a soccer lover; Chatham Tap is a fun place. (It's a good joint even if you're not into soccer).

Geist is a great place. Make some friends that either have a 1) house on the water or 2) have a boat. It's party central on that lake in the summer.

Colts, Pacers, Indians, Indy Eleven, Motor Speedway, Butler...great places to take in a sporting event.

Enjoy your stay. Welcome to Naptown.

Make sure you go to the great deli downtown off the south part of the city, cant remember the name but I made my clients take their lunchdate there. Unbelievable. Looked up the name-Shapiro's, you must go there

Again, thanks for the advice. I'm actually a huge soccer fan and intend on getting Indy Eleven season tickets.

I plan on going to the Purdue game in Indy and the Louisville game at ND. Also will be making the trip to Tally for the FSU game. No way I'm missing that.
