Losing Bowden would be a massive loss as director of recruiting. He's young, experienced in his role, and successful. He's also one of a kind with a big personality that kids love. Really hope this doesn't have legs.

I'd consider it a bigger problem for Ohio State, Penn State and the rest of the midwest football bottom feeding contingent of that conference.

If Duke, Northwestern, Vanderbilt or Stanford suddenly became some recruiting juggernaut I'd be way more concerned. The odds of that happening are very slim.

I'm concerned little to none about what others are doing. I'm concerned far more about what ND does and doesn't do. If they are progressively and proactively thinking, they'll be fine. If they get in their own way more often than not, it doesn't matter what Michigan is doing.

The odds of Bowden staying at ND for the rest of his career seem slim too, even without knowing his personal ambitions. These are jobs to these guys. They come and go.

Yeah this is either going to be a bit of a mini-disaster if he leaves, or a huge boon if he stays.

1. Overhaul recruiting effort/organization at ND while dealing with administrative hurdles
2. Stack up talent in a way not seen in over a decade
3. Cause Michigan to attempt to poach by offering further investment and organizational focus on recruiting
4. Cause ND to match Michigan's investment and willingness to go big
5. ?????
6. Profit!

If he leaves, I say "mini-disaster" only because losing him to a regional rival would sting.

I think the "GM" role at the college level is much more evaluation-focused. While Freeman is a dawg on the trail, he may not be able to give all the time he wants to review film for sleepers, under-the-radar guys, or guys who blow up during their senior season (just to use some examples). Bowden is tasked with finding those guys.

Also think it's much more "people-focused." Identifying the recruits/commits that need more hand holding and "love" during the process and directing resources to make those guys happy, etc.

Thanks. Not meaning to be snarky, but that description sounds like the traditional Recruiting Coordinator role. If the "GM" title is just an excuse to add a zero to his paycheck, I'm all for it.

I think it would extend more to evaluating your current roster as well though. We thought this 4 star defensive end would be ready in 2 years to hit the 2 deep but he hasn't, so is it time to process him? Keep developing him? Recruit another 4 star? Transfer portal? Grad Transfer? Steal sideline signals?

I agree. I think GMs will take on the roll of overseeing the program in terms of evaluations and analysis. That could be high schoolers, the portal, opponent research (legally, *cough*fuckyoumichigan*cough), etc. I also see it as a confidant for the HC in terms of program outlook, growth, and management --> staffing, public relations, admin relations, NIL fundraising and budgetting, etc. ND, especially, is a massive brand and in the past, most of the "extra duties" have fallen on the head coach which we all know take time away from running his program. BK was known to be pretty good at this. But what if someone like MF had help so he could focus on other things? That's what I see of a GM. I could be dead wrong though, I'm just spittballing.

Yes…agreed. Plus, ND can take more flyers on a 3-star and if he doesn’t develop into a key player they can replace him via the portal while helping him navigate his next landing spot.

The GM role would include overseeing NIL, recruiting, and personnel along with a substantial pay raise according to Michigan 247. It's basically total roster management including recruits, free agents, and current enrollees.

I don't know what his role at ND is currently but this does seem like more than a "recruiting coordinator" job.

Can't imagine why they wouldn't. They already showed they're willing to break the bank for Denbrock and Golden.

I think he has a staff that works under him, but I think they can definitely give him a few more bodies. In that case, this may force ND's hand, and like I said, I don't think they balk at this. It would be an insanely bad look to let Bowden walk because you weren't willing to give him the raise and support he's earned.

Again, I think they will give him what he's earned. I think the old adage that ND will go cheap has gone out the window.
