Spurrier stokes Urban Meyer-to-Notre Dame rumors

By LARRY HARTSTEIN
Atlanta Journa-Constitution
Thursday, May 14, 2009
There is no offseason when it comes to Steve Spurrier’s ability to stir things up.
Without prompting, the Head Ball Coach this week brought up rumors about Florida coach Urban Meyer bolting for Notre Dame.
In a long interview on the Paul Finebaum Radio Network, Spurrier called Meyer one of the nation’s top coaches, then digressed.
“They’ve still got that rumor going down there, Paul, that if he has about one more big year he might be the Notre Dame coach,” Spurrier said. “I know you’ve heard that rumor.”
Finebaum chimed in that “people at Notre Dame firmly believe” Meyer will jump to South Bend next year.
Meyer grew up in Ohio and has repeatedly referred to Notre Dame as his “dream job.” But he chose Florida over the Irish in 2004.
“It’d be surprising if he left, but who knows?” said Spurrier, the former Gators coach now heading South Carolina. “He’s accomplished so much. I mean, I left after 12 years because I just said, ‘Hey, I’ve done enough. Try something else.’ He may get to the point where he needs to try something else. Who knows?”
Confirming that he was speaking off the cuff, Spurrer added: “Maybe it was his dream job and not anymore. I don’t know.”
====================================

The AJC has a poll going you can vote Yes or No that Meyer will coach ND. Voting is running about 2:1 for Yes.

Maybe he realizes that SoCarolina football is becoming irrelevant and needs to make splashes elsewhere.

I like how the title to this thread is Meyer to Notre Dame, when the quote from Spurrier is pure speculation and doesnt tell us anything that we dont already know.

Ya mean Finebaum's confirmation doesn't make it true?

Damn, I'm still crushed from "IT'S GRUDEN!"

Orlando Sentinel - Steve Spurrier tops top-10 list of best pot-stirring college football coaches by Matt Humphrey

Check the Top 4, the article could have been titled, "Familiarity Breeds Contempt".

1. Steve Spurrier, South Carolina Gamecocks: Former Tennessee coach Phil Fulmer never fully regained his manhood after Spurrier told the media that you can't spell Citrus Bowl without the letters "UT". That makes Spurrier's Urban Meyer-to-Notre Dame comments on Paul Finebaum's radio show seem pretty tame.
2. Lane Kiffin, Tennessee Volunteers: Do we really need to explain ourselves? See Hood, Daniel; Davis, Al and the principal of Pahokee High School who banned Kiffin's staff from the school grounds. The man is a menace in the making.
3. Mark Richt, Georgia Bulldogs: Mark Richt may seem like a puppy dog on the outside, but he's a pot-stirrer at heart. He encouraged his Bulldogs to earn an end-zone celebration penalty against the Florida Gators then whined about where the end zone's located -- Jacksonville, Fla.
4. Urban Meyer, Florida Gators: Make no mistake. The Urbanator is Darth Vader incarnate for alumni who don't agree with him or Southeastern Conference coaches who use limos on the recruiting trail.

this is Steve spurrier at his best - he is going after a team in his conference that is in his way. its no coincidence that is being said right before/during the recruiting season. this is to sway recruits minds, create uncertainty at FLA, and it plays into the situation at ND too. Because there are still a few gullable, weis-hating ppl that think Meyer wants to come to ND (ppl forget, HE ALREADY TURNED DOWN ND!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HELLO????) The ol' ball coach is taking advantage of the Meyer-ND situation (which is a non-issue) to gain the upper hand with recruits with regards to FLA. He knows any top level athlete would have to consider going to FLA over South Carolina, so he is doing what he thinks he needs to do to create doubt in those recruits minds.

"You dont want to go to Florida, the coach is not committed to you or the University, he is going to leave for ND next year....."

I know he is a kind of a jerk, but I dont blame Spurrier at all, he is doing what he needs to do to give his team a better shot at winning. And he is efficiently sticking it to his main rival in the region as well, I see spurrier workin.

I have insider info that Meyer has already inked a contract at ND for THIS season. And its 99% solid that he is bringing Omar Hunter along.

All the chuckling aside, I do believe that anything short of a BCS berth and a respectable performance in said BCS game would result in Urban Meyer being sought after by the University one last time.

its seems that some ppl think only Urban Meyer can coach this team....

(back when I was single) I would only ask a female once, if she turned me down, i was off to the next one. there are too many out there to get stuck on one. especially one that isnt down with you. Then, when one of those see you out with another female, all of sudden they want to come back -- F' them. they had their shot and choose to piss it off.

and Urban Meyer had his shot too. It was back in 2004/2005 (or whenever weis was hired) that was his time at ND, and he choose to pissed it off, so F' him.

For Notre Dame to go after Urban Meyer now (again, after he already spurned them) makes them look desperate......like a battered woman who keeps going back to her abuser.

Spurrier hasn't had his head on straight since the 1990's, at the earliest.

I couldnt care less how desperate it makes us look. when the best coach in college football still lists ND as his dream job, you offer him again.

hes won two national titles in three years and is likely to win another one in '09. where is the hype? people need to accept that there is at the very least an outside chance urban meyer will coach at ND before he retires. waiting until the day he is hired to change your opinion of him will look very foolish.

If this was his dream job he would already be coaching at Notre Dame. Fuck the spread, we play football at Notre Dame not gimmick crap. This is a moot point anyways because Weis is our coach and i believe he will be for a while.

Look at the situatiuon he walked into...he stepped in, and kept the system rolling. I'm not saying he is a bad coach, but what about his coaching makes him so great? please convince me with some of his more memorable coaching decisions. You act like he is Bill Walsh, and I think he is more George Seifert.

Look at the situatiuon Weis walked into......a 10-year runaway clusterfuck.

yeah, the spread is stupid as hell. especially if it wins games and TWO national championships in 3 years........... Urban himself has said that this is his dream job, and that when ND offered in 04 he was already in the last hour with Florida. if not he probably would already be coaching here.

And TDHeysus, he did walk into a good situation....he knew that (some might call it a smart decision?), but it wasnt at the level he has brought it to now, which is a freaking jagornaut. Charlie walked into a shitty situation, but it doesnt excuse losing second half leads 3 times, especially Syracuse at home. and 3-9!!!! come on!

I like charlie, and want him to do well at ND, but if he doesnt put up the right amount of wins and at least play with USC, bye bye, dont forget to close the door on the way out. and Urban Meyer would be the first choice to replace him.

USC won two national championships without the spread. Pretty sure OSU won one as well.

You could argue that he's had a couple players who have made him look really good. I'm not saying he's not a great coach, I'm just wondering if he has 2 NCs without Tim Tebow, Percy Harvin and a few others. He did do well at Utah, so maybe he is the greatest thing since sliced bread. But, I don't like the fact that he may not have come to ND because of the challenge ahead of him if he had. If ND was truly his dream job, he would have been here in 2005..accepting all the challenges along the way. (That is of course if they offered him the job, which some say they never did...IDK)

Wow, I gave you reps for the astute comment about Spurrier being at his best sticking it to a rival. That said, you might want to rethink (delete) the entire "back when I was single" paragraph. I'm not sure Mrs TDHeysus would find the implication very flattering.

BTW, Ara turned down Hesburgh at their first meeting. Father Ted is one of the great one in ND history but he bungled Leahy's termination (Leahy had requested a leave of absence for health reasons), athletic scholarships (he slashed them), and both Brennan and Kuharich hirings/firings as badly as Monk handled Holtz's departure and the subsequent hirings/firings. Father Ted swallowed his pride and had another meeting with Ara. Ara got his concessions and Father Ted survived to gain national prominence. Monk is history - and a footnote at that.

It was Grunhard's dream to coach at ND also. His family vetoed a move to South Bend. It's called domestic tranquility, jason. You'll probably have to deal with it some day like most of us.

Fuck the spread, we play football at Notre Dame not gimmick crap

"... we play football at Notre Dame not gimmick crap." I imagine words more explicit than "crap" were exclaimed by Army coaches and players to describe Gus Dorias and Knute Rockne's style of play in 1913. The "Rockne Shift" that made "The Four Horsemen" legends was described as a gimmick. College football rules eventually outlawed that gimmick. When Leahy converted the ND attack to the "T-formation" it was called a gimmick. Holtz was accused of instilling a gimmick attack at ND in '86 when he installed the Triple Option on the field where Lujack, Guglielmi, Hanratty, Theismann, and Montana (among others) had made the forward pass an integral part of the ND attack. Funny how ND fans today ridicule Army, Navy, and AF for a gimmick attack but when ND ran the same offense - it was "real" football.

This is a moot point anyways because Weis is our coach and i believe he will be for a while.

You need to look up "moot". First definition is "arguable". Moot court is an arena where law students go to learn how to argue the law. Second definition deals with something that's already settled. IF Weis's future was already settled ND would have 10 verbals now. They wouldn't be waiting to see how the season plays out and if Charlie still has a job.

You could argue that he's had a couple players who have made him look really good. ...

Bowling Green was 3-8, 5-6, 5-6, and 2-9 before Meyer became their HC then they went 8-3 and 9-3. Guess his predecessors left the cupboard stocked with talent they just didn't know how to coach, right?

Utah was 4-7, 8-4, and 5-6 before Meyer became HC then they went 10-2, and 12-0. Guess it was just a couple of players there too ...

UF was 8-5, 8-5, 7-5 under Zook. He recruited well but had a habit of losing to bottom feeders. Meyer arrived and the Gators went 9-3, 13-1, 9-4, and 13-1.

I'm sure you're aware UF hadn't won a SEC Championship for the 5 season before Meyer arrived. They hadn't won a NC since '96. And Meyer's only won 2 in 4 years.

Meyer is the Winningest % coach in UF history. Better than Spurrier. His coaching record at BG, UT, and UF combined is better than Rockne's or Leahy's.

I'm not saying he's not a great coach, I'm just wondering if he has 2 NCs without Tim Tebow, Percy Harvin and a few others.

Ahem and how well did Holtz do without Rice and Rocket? Or Brown, Heck, Grundard, Watters, Stonebreaker, Lyght, Ho, et al?

... (That is of course if they offered him the job, which some say they never did...IDK)

Well I didn't see a copy of the contract offer but I do know a former ND player that he offered a job at Utah and a few weeks after that alumni said, "No, thank you", he was asked if he would like to join Meyer at ND. That was before ND's plane landed in Utah.

ND doesn't have the best success record when hiring coaches, see my previous comments regarding Leahy, Brennan, Kuharich, and Parshegian, then add Devine, Faust, Davie, Gruden, O'Leary, and Willingham and many more that told ND no through intermediaries. Nor has ND shown skill in terminating relationships with football coaches see Rockne, Anderson (who learned he was fired from a reporter), and Leahy.

Easy to blame Meyer but did he do the jilting? The perceived jilting (and related ego damage) seems to be the common element ( see, "back when I was single") in many of these posts. Meyer has been successful - quickly where ever he has gone - regardless of level of competition - the quality of the program in the years before his arrival.

He may be a snake oil salesman, a recruit highjacker, and not like alumni that critize him but he's successful as a Division 1, head coach based on winning percentage, big games, conference championships, and national championships. Time will tell if he's stays in the company of Rockne, Leahy, Switzer, and others at the .800+ winning percentage but it's inane to say he's stumbled into a winning situation when he's improved programs wherever he's gone.

Apparently "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned" needs to be updated to include ND fans who feel scorned - whether or not they actually were.

Go Irish!

Win 'em all, Charlie!

I know I havent posted much on here lately but I will break it down just like I always do. I tell it like it is and if you dont like it ya'll can kiss my ass. lol
Urban Meyer is hands down the BEST college football coach in the country. I know alot of you dont like him because he turned us down (boo hoo boo hoo) GET OVER IT!!!!!! Urban Meyer is just as much a Notre Dame guy as Charlie Weis is. Weis is hands down just not a good coach. He will fail here yet again probly this season and Urban will be our coach SOON! Get over it people, its just going to happen. Do I want to see Charlie Weis fail? No of course not, he's just set up to do so. Expect to lose 2-3 games every year as long as we have him. Sorry, Just telling you like it is. I EXPECT great things this year but dont we all every year?
