While I like Marcus Freeman, I don't see anything much better that can get us back into National Title hunt. A Top 9 class is not really a so-called "Gap Closing" class. He did win against Clemson and his bowl game so there is thankfully no hangover on those issues. However, it sucks our Top 3 Class slide down with the loss of so many high level players not closing.

Also, we have to be patient and not project overly-optimistic feelings without warrant. Like Faust, Freeman was never a HC. He made mistakes this year that costed us wins. Will he make less mistakes next year? We better hope so. We could have had Luke Fickell a solid HC with a high winning history. I believe Freeman was taken due to his charisma, players liked him, hope for recruiting prowess but the trade is the risk he had no HC track record. The recruiting is marginally better than Kelly but IMHO not good enough to say with confidence we are going to be chasing titles anytime soon.

Actually, discounting Kelly’s last recruiting class, freeman’s class looks a lot better.

MF has a great offensive room with a ton of talent to offer a lucky coach.

I love me some Marcus Freeman but this has got to be the worst nightmare he could have had. And it might not be over.

I hope the coaching staff he does have is right there with him and pumping him up.

While this isn’t the end of the world, there has been far less stability with this coaching staff than you would like with a neophyte head coach. On the one hand, it’s pretty much to the point that this is now his own staff with no leftovers (aside from Mickens, but he’s Freeman’s guy). On the other hand, it’s too much churn for maintaining continuity and the overall messaging from the HC. Will be interesting to see where this ends up.

He's 37 and a first time head coach. He's still building loyalty and a coaching tree. Turnover is going to happen.

This is where I am at. I liked Harry but I will admit I am not exactly bummed to see him leave. Freeman has had an awesome record thus far in coaches he's hired so I am going to trust him to put his stamp on the program.

I think Harry was only coming back for a short stint (2-3) seasons. So I think him moving on now is 1 of 2 things. Rees moving on and he doesn't want to start over with a new OC when he knows he's only got a season or 2 left. IMO it's that or he's falling on the sword for Coach Freeman to give the new OC to have at least 1 hire, knowing that he's done soon anyways.

I 100% agree. I was just saying for Freeman this had to be the last thing he wanted was another busy offseason. But he has made good hires and I would imagine he’ll do it again.

I just not ideal for a 2nd year coach.

It is part of the profession whether you've been head coach for a year or for 30 years. In many cases, these guys leave and say nothing about it to their players, grad assistants and interns. That includes "goodbye" too. As a player, you get used to it after the first couple of times.

The well at The Gug is not poisoned. This isn't happening because of scandals or sanctions coming from the NCAA. Harry was likely Tommy's guy, he's 65 and wants out.

Turnover should be expected in most cases in this profession. I really don't understand why some people get so panicked by it. I doubt Harry Hiestand was paying anyone's bills here and nobody is obligated to help him fill a moving truck. Freeman now has to fill two vacancies on a 9-4 team's coaching staff. It's a chance to get you better.

This is his worst nightmare?

I think most successful coaches view change as a way to improve so there's little doubt Freeman is attacking this with positivity and motivation to further develop the team with the identity he envisions.

The sensationalized narratives people put on this board help transform Irish football fandom from enjoyable pass time to soap opera emotional rollercoaster.
