I was just looking at something today in my thumb-twiddling, toe-tapping gameday impatience and it kinda caught my eye. Everybody talks about how dominant LSU is statistically, but are they really?

Total point differential vs. all opponents: 397-150

Eye-popping, yes; but wait:

vs. opponents without winning records (La-Laf, Tulane, Fresno St, etc.): 276-70

vs. opponents with winning records: 121-80 (with two losses in those five games)

I haven't really taken the time to investigate it, but I would assume this trend translates to the majority of the statistical categories. LSU plays a poor team and wins 40-something to 3/7 (But they did have a squeaker against Miss.) LSU plays a team that can actually beat other teams, and it's a close game, with LSU losing 2 out of the 5.

It's funny how so many in the media are quick to say that ND/BQ padded stats against the "service academies," but give LSU a pass on the doormats of the SEC, Fresno St, Tulane, and a Div-IAA team.

Also of note: The LSU offense that is so prolific and uber-talented and uber-fast and unstoppable put up 3......THREE!!!!!! points on Auburn and 10 on UF. Come on. Even when our defense played like crap our offense was able to put the ball in the endzone no matter who we were playing.

And LSU, not ND, is the team with the unstoppable offense? Tell that to AU, FL, USC, and UM. (And PSU while you're at it since they beat one of LSU's two "quality" wins, while we put up 41 on PSU.)

This game isn't gonna be the cakewalk that LSU and the media are expecting.

GO IRISH!!!!!!

[Edit:] The gist of it, I guess, is that LSU isn't necessarily as "lights-out" as so many are making them to be.

I think you mak a good point.

The opponent that LSU played that is most like ND (on the field) would be Tenn. Tenn has an average defense with a good passing game. Very much like us. In the rankings, Tenn is ranked close to us, somewhere in the teens.

LSU beat Tenn 28-24.

So with that said, I do think we can hang with these guys. Not so much because we are any beter than I thought. but more because I don't think LSU is as good as advertised.

My thoughts exactly. I in no way think that ND isn't vulnerable to very similar criticisms in some respects; I just think that people are giving LSU way too much credit.

Oh the irony should LSU turn out to be the over-rated team.

Yeah, I know; and when we win it will be discounted for exactly that reason, with the Robot-Genius still not having a "signature win." ESPN will begin analyzing LSU's season along a very similar thought process as in my original post, and conclude that they weren't really that good and had padded their stats against weak teams without really beating anyone of consequence while everyone in the media drank the Kool-Aid. (Sound familiar?)

The thing that really cracks me up is the people who say (and sincerely believe) LSU is the best football team in Louisiana (including the Saints.)

The latest thing on the LSU boards is how Saban going to Bama is going to be a distraction for LSU (and it isn't just one or two people following that theme.) Maybe now that put-up-or-shut-up time is approaching the LSU fans are starting to realize that they aren't playing Louisiana-LaFayette.

I dont know, that was technically a good and easy argument to make prior to this year.

"Prior to this year" and today are two completely different animals my friend.

yes i know, but it is farily true. You must really have to suck to have your fans brown bag it at the games and also to have your fans refer to the team as the "Aints"

Again, that was last year. Looking at how much turnover took place on that team in the last year it would be utterly ridiculous to equate last year's team to this year's.

[Edit:] For clarification, the LSU fans I was referring to (saying that LSU is the best football team in LA) were making the comparison to the Saints of this year, not last. I agree that last season's Saints were atrocious, but that is irrelevant.

WOW! Chill the fuck out dude. You are taking this entirely too seriously. I mean wtf? I dont give a shit about this years saints. There was a point in time not to far back where one could say that LSu was the most important football team in La. I know several people from NO including my roommate and 5 best friends through college. They all hated the Aints and loved LSU with unflinching passion. that is all i am saying. my god.

WOW! Chill the fuck out dude.

I pointed out that I heard some LSU fans saying they're the best football team in LA (specifically, this year).

You brought up the Saints of last year.

I clarified that it was about the quality of the teams this year.

You sling the profanity and tell me to "chill the fuck out."

Maybe you should take some of your own advice.

As for your roommates and/or friends...I never said that the Saints had more fans/support/importance (I don't know...they may or may not.) I simply said that there are LSU fans that think LSU is the better team (i.e. they would beat the Saints.)

This is waaay more of an over-reaction than what timugen wrote. He didn't write anything that deserved this dramatic reaction.

Geaux Tigers... get the fuck out of here.. No one here needs to hear your poor speaking lips brag on how you guys beat us... Everyone here has too much pride and dignity to give a rats ass what you say in here, so do something with your time and life instead of coming into a ND message board as a patehtic LSu fan faggot

I love a sore loser - waaaaay to easy to push their buttons.

Nothing more rewarding than a dumbass speaking about that which he does not know. I'm (definitely) not poor and it's pretty entertaining to see what you people think about your lacking team. Props for being full of pride and dignity. We wouldn't have it any other way.

Gracious- adj. Having or showing kindness, affability, etc. ... Condescendingly polite or indulgent... Full of compassion; merciful

just giving you the definition in case you didn't know what that meant... DO i need to let you know what those other big words mean???

I believe you mean "Just shut the fuck up, PLEASE."

We still consider etiquette a sign of class here.

and you find the need to come onto a ND website and gloat about beating a "overrated team" 2 two days after the game and you call that class?

OK.

Geaux Tigers... just give up, you have nothing to say that can even be adamant to the situation....

Do I need to use that word in another sentence for you?? to make it simpler for you to understand

I certainly appreciate your gracious hospitality and this little game of cat and mouse... er, tiger and leprechaun. Best wishes next season, truly.

I'll leave you with this... there is no such thing as a gracious winner in the SEC. It's too dynamic a conference to make friends on the way up because they are all anxiously awaiting the day that they bring you down. Enjoy it while you can.

... that was completely flooded by hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

The people that are living and working in NOLA are pretty much the epitomy of pride and dignity.

great post.... the overrated one was un needed but this is grand, cheers to you if you ever return... I always liked LSU THE true 2004 National Champion... and from my experience you all show respect while giving sher passion... no better combo... sounds like ND if you ask me... some years ago I remember LSU being laughed at in the SEC... now look at you.... got to love stories like that

we are ND!!! we are getting there and deserved to be in the BCS, (like you wouldn't have KILLED Bosie, Wake and others) and will have our day... I will continue to root for LSU and hope J Russ comes back... Good game LSU... stay classy... that goes for you too Geaux Tigers

We still consider etiquette a sign of class here.

That's funny... my etiquette lessons as a child never taught me that it was "a sign of class" to go on the message board of an opposing team's fans and gloat after a big win.

Geez, act like you've won a game before.

Negative reps for you.
