Hayseed is no more. Harrison Smith is his name. He has recovered from the pathetic Weis era coaching to approach his college football potential. I see him in the NFL in 2 years, maybe an all-american at ND next season.

I was so excited about this kid when we got him out of Tenessee, but the las two years were abysmal for him. He's played so lights out this year it's been really fun and enjoyable to watch him play this year.

I hope this isn't a celebration thread for Harrison Smith for the INT in the USC game! Seriously! If it wasn't for butterfingers Johnson we lose the game because Harrison got burnt..

It was raining for everybody. He just got too excited and decided to score a touchdown before he had the ball.

All-American? Don't get ****y. Harrison is improved, but he is far from spectacular.

This is what good coaching can do for most players. They live up to their potential. We got rid of the abortion of a coaching staff from last year and brought in Brian Kelly, Bob Diaco, and Chuck Martin. You aren't going to get coached up much better by anyone else. Martin is going to be a head coach at a big program sooner rather than later.

i love the kid, he is great, but he almost cost us tonight, and he did cost us in the slip in east lansing on the fake field goal. let's not crown him all american just yet.

Harrison Smith has had a great year. Maybe he won't be an all-american, but he will definately get a shot at the NFL after next year. He is very solid and was one of our best players the entire year.

Wow! I'm glad I'm not single out here in this thread. Thank you for having a little prospective like me.

Brian Kelly was asked about this 2 weeks ago in the press conference. He pretty much said, do you know something I don't know? to the reporter, basically saying, Chuck came here to win at Notre Dame, he loves Notre Dame, being from Chicago he always wanted to coach here. So to me, it didn't sound like he wanted to go anywhere else.

While I will always maintain that the criticism of his play was warranted I will say (FOR YOU JONESMAN) after tonight, his poor performances were due in large part to poor coaching, and Hayseed is a stud.

It didn't work out well when we last promoted an assistant. That man was Bob Davie.

Where was Boob Davie head coach before ND?

74–7
2 Division II titles
3 Conference Championships

I think I'll give Martin a chance. I've seen all the interviews with Martin and the guy gets it.

Wouldn't say he got burnt, as he fell on the slippery turf and it was probably what Johnson was trying to prevent when he nonchalantly turned to catch the ball.

I like HArrison Smith and he made a great int last week against Army but this int was a fly ball for the center fielder. HE also dropped an int on USC's first play. I think the D overall was huge. No big plays and one big *** break. SC got a break when Blanton totally mistimed his jump and missed the int. We gave USC 4 turnovers and they still couldn't win. I like HArrison Smith for his physicality.

What his excuse for slipping in the MSU overtime TD?

I think he ended up on the turf...because he got trucked by the guy who caught the ball for a TD. Not sure it was a slip necessarily...but I would say he was out of position when he got trucked...

still, the guy has come a long way...even since that game. His play deserved criticism, but lately he has come up very big.

The slip reminded me of the U$C game in ARA's first year when the DB fell down and U$C scored the winning TD in the waning minutes of the game.
This guy played his heart out all year. Calling him out for two plays is stupid, ignorant, and cruel.
I would have loved seeing him play if he had received good coaching in the past three years; from the development in his game, he is really a freshman with one good year of coaching (and playing him in the correct position-safety).

You are talking about a couple of plays during a long season. How many times did he make tackles that saved TDs from being scored?

Maybe just like myself he was waiting for the yellow flag to come out considering it was almost 2 full seconds after the play clock expired that they ran their play.

I love all the people that are calling him out from behind a computer screen...most probably never played a down of ball in their lives! He's got heart and proved to be a solid player I look forward to having him back.

The so-called "slip" vs MSU was a fairly gross offensive pass interference which wasn't called in my memory. Perhaps we could get off this guy's butt and congratulate him on being [in Kelly's own words] our defensive leader. All defensive backs have a few instances of getting burnt during a season; it's part of the job description. Mountain William says: " Life is a mirror. The person who finds fault in everything, finds himself".
